Adsorbate-localized states at water-covered (100) SrTiO[sub 3] surfaces

The electronic structure of hydrated SrTiO3 (001) surfaces is investigated using density-functional models. It is shown that adsorbed water molecules give rise to unoccupied electron states similar in localization and shape to wet-electron states recently reported for other oxide-water interfaces, and believed to serve as a preferred path for transfer of conduction electrons to the surface water molecules. Additionally, we found that chemisorbed water and hydrogen have donor levels in the band gap, and that chemisorbed hydrogen is oxidized and released in the presence of free holes. Solar photoelectrolysis of water with translucent nano-structured hematite photoanodes

In the context of the diminishing fossil energy resources and global warming, much research is focused on sustainable energy sources. The research that is presented in this thesis falls in this category as it contributes to the development of a device that stores solar energy into a chemical fuel. This device is based on the photoelectrolysis of water in a tandem-cell that produces hydrogen and oxygen under illumination of sunlight. This can be achieved by connecting a larger band gap semiconductor photoanode for oxygen evolution (such as WO3 with Eg = 2.6 eV or Fe2O3 with Eg = 2.0 eV) in series with two dye sensitized solar cells and a hydrogen evolving cathode. Red and green light transmitted by the photoanode is absorbed by the dye, so that a large part of the solar spectrum can be utilized. Fe2O3 absorbs a larger part of the visible solar spectrum as compared to WO3, which results in a 3 times higher theoretical conversion efficiency for the tandem-cell. However, the small hole diffusion length in Fe2O3 of 2 to 20nm is seen as an important reason for the lower practical conversion efficiencies reported in literature. The aim of this thesis project is to improve the photooxidation activity of iron oxide photoanodes in order to improve the practical conversion efficiency of the tandem-cell. For this purpose we have prepared thin films of nano-structured iron oxide with various deposition methods and characterized their performance on the photooxidation of water. The photoanodes are measured in aqueous solution of 1 M NaOH (pH=13.6) under illumination of simulated sunlight (AM 1.5 global of 1000 W/m2). We report the photocurrent at the reversible water oxidation potential of 1.23 V vs. RHE. The first chapter briefly discusses the potential of hydrogen as an energy carrier in a global hydrogen economy and places the tandem-cell in this context. In chapter two the current status of photoelectrolysis of water with iron oxide is briefly reviewed. The experimental set-up for the measurement of the photocurrent under simulated sun light and for the acquisition of photocurrent action spectra are described. This chapter also deals with the spectral mismatch error that is associated with the solar simulator calibration procedure. Chapter three introduces a new solution strategy for efficient photoanodes based on a nanocomposite structure with a hematite film thickness that is commensurate to the hole diffusion length alleviating the problem of poor charge transport. For this purpose nano-porous films of doped and undoped tinoxide and arrays of perpendicularly oriented nanorods of the same material are conformally coated with a thin film of hematite (2-20nm). These electrodes are characterized by SEM, TEM, XEDS elemental analysis, Raman spectroscopy in addition to the photoelectrochemical response. Although, evidence is presented for the successful preparation of the nano-composite structures with a sufficient optical density, the photocurrents obtained from these electrodes are very low. In chapter four we report on thin silicon-doped nanocrystalline α-Fe2O3 films (thickness of 250-500nm) that have been deposited on F-doped SnO2 substrates by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) and chemical vapor deposition at atmospheric pressure (APCVD). The photoanodes prepared by USP and APCVD gave a photocurrent of 1.17 and 1.45 mA/cm2 respectively. The morphology of the α-Fe2O3 was strongly influenced by the silicon doping, decreasing the feature size of the mesoscopic film. The silicon-doped α-Fe2O3 nano-leaflets show a preferred orientation with the (001) basal plane normal to the substrate. Chapter five treats the preparation and characterization of hematite photoanodes prepared by an improved APCVD setup. Under illumination water is oxidized at the Fe2O3 electrode with higher efficiency (IPCE = 42% at 370 nm and 2.2 mA/cm2) than at the best reported single crystalline Fe2O3 electrodes. This unprecedented efficiency is in part attributed to the dendritic nanostructure which minimizes the distance photo generated holes have to diffuse to reach the Fe2O3/electrolyte interface while still allowing efficient light absorption. Part of the gain in efficiency is obtained by depositing a thin insulating SiO2 interfacial layer between the SnO2 substrate and the Fe2O3 film, and a catalytic cobalt monolayer on the Fe2O3 surface. A mechanistic model for water photooxidation is presented, involving stepwise accumulation of four holes by two vicinal iron or cobalt surface sites. In chapter six we present a detailed investigation of the dependency of the photocurrent response on film thickness and feature size of doped and undoped hematite photoanodes prepared by the APCVD setup discussed in chapter five, in absence of a redox catalyst. Evidence is presented of an unusual high donor density of 1020 cm-3 in the silicon doped photoanodes which would allow a space charge layer to be formed inside the nano-sized features of the polycrystalline film. This suggests that electric field induced charge separation could be an important reason for the photocurrent improvement reported in chapter five. In addition, a strong correlation between feature size and the intensity of a Raman band at 660cm-1 is presented and discussed in the context of disorder in the crystal structure. Chapter seven presents a study of the influence that the deposition parameters have on the photoresponse, morphology, and crystal structure of films prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. Films are characterized by SEM, XEDS elemental analysis, TEM, XRD, Mössbauer and Raman spectroscopy. A strong correlation is found between the formation of β-Fe2O3 (Bixbyite) and low photocurrents. Silicon doped films enable the electron transport across a film thickness of 1300nm. The absorbed-photon-to-current-conversion-efficiency (APCE) increases with film thickness below 150nm, which indicates an increased recombination near the substrate interface. This could be an important reason for the low photoresponse of nanocomposite electrodes studied in chapter three. In chapter eight we draw some general conclusions with regards to the future development of these photoanodes.

On the Morphology and Interfaces of Nanostructured Hematite Photoanodes for Solar-Driven Water Splitting

A sustainable route to store the energy provided by the Sun, is to directly convert sunlight into molecular hydrogen using a semiconductor performing water photolysis. Hematite (α-Fe2O3) is promising for this application due to its ample abundance, chemical stability and significant light absorption (with a band gap of 2.0 - 2.2 eV). Despite these advantageous properties, several drawbacks restrain the utilization of iron oxide for photoelectrochemical water splitting. The first limitation, namely the conduction band edge lower than the water reduction potential, can be straightforwardly overcome by adding a second solar system in tandem, which can absorb a complementary part of the solar spectrum and bring the electron at an energetic level higher than the hydrogen evolution potential. The second drawback arises from the disaccord between the short charge carrier diffusion length and the large light penetration depth. It is therefore necessary to control the hematite morphology on a length scale similar to the hole transport length. To further enhance the photoelectrochemical performance, a new concept for water splitting is introduced in this thesis. The host-guest approach consists in decoupling the different tasks of the photoanode (on one side light harvesting and water oxidation center, on the other side electron conduction to the substrate) by depositing a thin layer of hematite onto a mesoporous host (WO3 in this study). This concept has been demonstrated to increase the photocurrent by ca. 20% due to enhanced quantum efficiencies at long wavelengths. This demonstration has been nonetheless limited by the iron oxide thin films overall efficiency. Thin films photoactivity is then investigated by two means: first by controlling their nucleation on a modified substrate and secondly by incorporating plasmonic nanoparticles aimed to localize absorption in the thin film. The formation of a SiOx buffer layer on the substrate prior to deposition of hematite by Fe(acac)3 spray is shown to modify the film formation mode and its physical properties. These films exhibit photoactivity from an optical thickness of 12.5 nm (as compared to 25 nm without underlayer). The study of hematite photoanodes with gold nanoparticles, embedded or deposited on its surface, establish that charge transfer from metal nanoparticles is occurring only at overlapping wavelengths between the plasmonic resonance and the semiconductor absorption. Nevertheless, photoelectrochemical performances are reduced because of high recombination rate at the metal/semiconductor interface. Finally the third limitation, i.e. the large overpotential required to observe the onset of water splitting photocurrent, is tackled in the last part. The onset potential of photocurrent is decreased by a very thin coating of Al2O3 (0.1 - 2 nm), deposited by ALD, on the nanostructured photoanode. The subsequent application of the Co2+ catalyst further reduces the overpotential and results in a record photocurrent at 0.9 VRHE of over 0.4 mA cm-2. This investigation clearly distinguishes two causes for this energy loss: surface traps and slow oxidation kinetics. The charge accumulation and the Fermi level pinning, observed at low bias potential and assigned to these surface states were further rationalized in an investigation on photocurrent and photovoltage transients.

Alignment of energy levels in amorphous oxides and at semiconductor-water interfaces

We conduct a detailed investigation of defects in two representative amorphous oxides: amorphous Al2O3 (am-Al2O3) and TiO2 (am-TiO2), by combining ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and hybrid functional calculations. Our results indicate that oxygen vacancies and interstitials occur neither in am-Al2O3 nor in am-TiO2 due to structural rearrangements which assimilate the defect structure, and that the injection of extra holes can lead to the formation of O-O peroxy linkages. In am-Al2O3, hydrogen is found to be amphoteric. Based on localized Wannier functions, we identify the nominal charge state and the composition of the defect core units related to C and N impurities in am-Al2O3, which are found to depend on the total charge set in the simulation cell. Through the adopted electron counting rule, we assess that carbon and nitrogen impurities are only found in neutral and in singly positive charge states, respectively, indicating that none of them gives charge transition levels in am-Al2O3. In addition, those defect core units are shown to incorporate a varying number of oxygen atoms, by which their formation energy is dependent on the oxygen chemical potential. In addition, we propose an exchange mechanism for hole transport in am-TiO2 that relies on the simultaneous breaking and forming of O-O peroxy linkages that share one O atom. Through the use of nudged-elastic-band calculations, a hopping path as long as 1.2 nm with barriers of 0.3-0.5 eV is demonstrated, suggesting that hole diffusion through O-O peroxy linkages is viable in am-TiO2. In this work, we also determine the band alignment between various semiconductors and liquid water by combining MD simulations of atomistic interface models, electronic-structure calculations at the hybrid-functional and GW levels, and a computational standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). Our study comprises GaAs, GaP, GaN, CdS, ZnO, SnO2, rutile and anatase TiO2. For each semiconductor, we generate atomistic interface models with liquid water at the pH corresponding to the point of zero charge. The MD simulations are started from initial configurations, in which the water molecules are either molecularly (m) or dissociatively (d) adsorbed on the semiconductor surface. The calculated band offsets are found to be strongly influenced by the adsorption mode at the semiconductor-water interface, leading to differences larger than 1 eV between m and d models of the same semiconductor. We then assess the accuracy of various ab initio electronic-structure schemes in determining the band alignment. In the last part, we try to evaluate photocatalysts for water-splitting by considering the surface coverage and the energy alignment. We determine surface concentrations of water molecules, protons, and hydroxyl ions adsorbed at the semiconductor-water interfaces mentioned above as a function of pH. This is achieved through the calculation of the acidity constants at the surface sites, which are derived from ab initio MD simulations and a grand-canonical formulation of adsorbates. It is finally shown how the potential of a semiconductor material as photocatalysts for water splitting can be inferred by combining the nature of the surface coverage and the alignment of the band edges to the relevant redox levels.
