Temporally aliased video microscopy: an undersampling method for in-plane modal analysis of microelectromechanical systems

A simple optical method is proposed for performing in-plane experimental modal analysis of micromachined structures with a conventional charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. The motion of a micromechanical device actuated by high frequency sinusoidal forces (kHz range) is recorded at the fixed sampling rate of a camera (typically 28 frames/sec.) which is configured with a short shutter aperture time (1/5000 s). Provided a CCD sensor with sufficient sensitivity, lots of information are contained in the video on the dynamics of the vibrating system despite the limited frame rate. Taking advantage of the theory of undersampling, we show that the dynamics of systems with several kHz bandwidth can be retrieved very easily. For demonstration purposes, we first study a push-pull electrostatic comb- drive actuator, which is a well-known damped harmonic oscillator system. Then, we show that our measurement method also provides useful information on the behavior of nonlinear systems. In particular, we can characterize systems' superharmonic and subharmonic resonances in a straightforward way.

Physics of optically driven nanojunctions

Recent years have seen spectacular developments in the domain of nano-optics. Alongside the well-known techniques of super-resolution microscopy progress in nanofabrication has enabled important improvements in the fields of optical imaging and spectroscopy. Nowadays enhancements of specific near-field interactions by nano-antennae/cavities allows the optical readout of single molecule properties in a number of different systems. The observation of normal modes of vibration for example carries essential information on the orientation, link to the interface and environment in which the molecule is embedded. This thesis develops firstly a novel theoretical frame for these vibration-cavity interactions by following the optomechanical formalism, which has proven to be an accurate treatment of a wide variety of mechanical systems interacting with a laser field. By leveraging this framework, we investigate on the one hand several quantum limits. On the other hand, for the parameter space experimentally available and for well-designed cavities, novel regimes of interaction between the collective mode of vibration of an ensemble of molecules and an optical tone seem within reach. In parallel, this thesis experimentally explores one specific realization of such a system. In collaboration with the group of Christophe Galland we constructed the optical setups necessary to interrogate our nanostructures. The class of structures constructed, known as self-assembled nanojunctions or nanoparticles on mirror, reaches confinement of electric fields via plasmonic modes close to its fundamental limit and enables the study of many different mechanical systems whose thickness consist in a single molecule. Along this research we have developed techniques to characterize mechanical, electronic and thermal observables of nanojunctions interacting with an optical field. Our experimental study has enabled the discovery of a novel effect related to the electronic confinement of these quasi-0-dimensional structures. The characteristic photoluminescence of metallic nanostructures is found to consistently blink in nanojunctions akin to other quantum emitters. The mechanisms explaining in detail this blinking remain debatable but the numerous experimental data collected highlight the key role of the interface in the specificities of the blinking observed. This finding opens novel ways to characterize the important and to date ill-described question of the interfaces in nanojunctions. The observed modifications of the nanojunctions optical properties might constitute an interesting step towards the development of a novel class of functional materials ('gap-materials') with enhanced and tailored electro-optical properties. The last part of this thesis considers one technological application for this class of material by conceptually developing a new kind of detector based on the upconversion of an infrared photon to the visible; exploiting thus in a unique way the optical properties of the molecular system. The study of the quantum noises of these detectors highlights two exciting and technologically relevant directions for such devices : at room temperature these systems operate with levels of noise below state of the art devices, at lower temperatures these systems open an unexplored path towards single photon detection in a spectral range where this technology remains unavailable to date.

Towards the Glass Transition in Vibrated Granular Matter

Granular materials are large sets of macroscopic particles that interact solely via contact forces. The static behavior depends on the contact network and on the surface friction forces between grains; when they are set in motion (typically by vibrations) their dynamics is dominated by inelastic collisions. For these reasons granular media show an extremely rich phenomenology, ranging from fluid-like properties (if strongly vibrated), to "jamming", glassy, behavior (if weakly vibrated), to aging and hysteretical phenomena observed when they become trapped in frozen, amorphous states. The objective of this work is to study these states and transitions, and to characterize the analogies found between the dynamic behavior of vibrated granular media and the glass transition observed in thermal glass-formers. These analogies justify the interest in granular materials, because granular media can be seen as simplified model systems useful in the study of out of equilibrium thermodynamics, and, in general, to the larger framework known as "complexity". The granular materials considered here are composed of spheric, polished glass spheres. Since the surface state plays an important role in the grain-grain interaction, some measurements were also performed with acid etched beads, having different surface roughness. The samples are vertically vibrated to achieve vibrofluidization. Different kinds of vibration are used, to highlight different properties of the system. We first consider the transition between the fluid and the subcooled glassy phase, using different experimental techniques. The most important one is a torsion oscillator, that interacts with the granular media via immersed probes. The torsion oscillator can be used in forced mode. A torque is applied on the probe, and we measure the mechanical response function (complex susceptibility). In general, a relaxation is found and it is interpreted as the signature of the irreversible energy loss (damping) in granular collisions. This relaxation has an intrinsic time scale, and systematic analysis of it shows that a clear parallel can be traced to the behavior of "strong" glasses. In particular, it is found that (i) the relaxation time is a function of a unified control parameter, proportional to the square root of the average vibration, and phenomenologically equivalent to an effective temperature; (ii) the functional form with which the relaxation times approach the final "frozen" state has an Arrhenius, or Vögel-Fulcher-Tamman (VFT) behavior. The same torsion oscillator is employed in free mode. In this case, no external torque is applied, and the probe moves adapting its position under the effect of the continuous rearrangements in the sample. The system is studied by computing the power spectral density of the (angular position) time series. The resulting spectra represent a "configurational noise" as the system randomly hops from one configuration to the following. This allows to define, using a completely different approach, the same intrinsic time scale observed in forced mode measurements. The comparison of the two techniques allows to obtain a more complete and detailed picture of the dynamics in the jamming region. From this comparison, it was inferred that the system is also influenced by an effective vibration frequency, and that the relaxation time has indeed a non-Arrhenius behavior as a function of a control parameter defined as as = √ Γ/ωs. A model was developed combining rheological observations to a statistic approach describing extremal phenomena. This model justifies the appearance of both the control parameter and the VFT evolution of the relaxation. Furthermore, the model is predictive and exposes the effect of a few other rheologic properties of granular system. The effect of surface roughness are considered, showing that the static and dynamic surface friction coefficients are well described by the model. A second relevant part of this work is devoted to an explicit verification that macroscopic probes act as Brownian objects. This fact is often used to interpret experimental data (also in the present work) and to propose theoretical model. However, no explicit evidence has ever been discussed. This is hard to do, using a constrained system such as the torsion oscillator, because the restoring coefficient influences the dynamics of diffusion. To overcome the problem we built a different apparatus, called "Brownian motor", where the probes are mounted on ball bearings, so that they are free to turn without constraint. The properties of the time series of the position of the free turning probe and of the torsionally constrained oscillator can finally be analyzed and compared with simple simulations. The data show an overall diffusion-like behavior, that is influenced by the presence of constraints. Using fractal analysis we estimate the diffusion, or Hurst exponent. This allows to verify that a "macroscopic" object (the probe) immersed in the "microscopic" granular medium indeed behaves as a Brownian object, and that its dynamics can be studied in detail, showing that it undergoes anomalous diffusion. This work is concluded with a discussion on a few possible developments. The most promising idea is a novel approach to the study of the geometrical properties of the contact network of granular assemblies, that is responsible for many of the properties of the granular sample. By using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, the static 3-D structure of granular media can be reconstructed with unprecedented accuracy, resolution and ease of reproducibility. From the spatial information we can extract all the properties of static granular media: the compaction factor, the grain-grain correlation function, the free volume and other observables. Systematic studies could allow experimental confirmations of the many theoretical models that have been proposed in the last years and that still lack a thorough comparison with experiments. This idea does not conclude the perspectives of this work, that are vast and intriguing. A few promising subjects are reviewed more into detail in the corresponding Perspective section. To name a few we cite: measurements of induced aging in non-vibrated samples, the Brownian motor, stick and slip phenomena and their comparison with earthquakes.

A high sensitivity, low noise and high spatial resolution multi-band infrared reflectography camera for the study of paintings and works on paper

Background: Infrared reflectography (IRR) remains an important method to visualize underdrawing and compositional changes in paintings. Older IRR camera systems are being replaced with near-infrared cameras consisting of room temperature infrared detector arrays made out of indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) that operate over the spectral range of similar to 900 to 1700 nm. Two camera types are becoming prevalent. The first is staring array infrared cameras having 0.25-1 Megapixels where the camera or painting is moved to acquire tens of individual images that are later mosaicked together to create the infrared reflectogram. The second camera type is scanning back cameras in which a small InGaAs array (linear or area array) is mechanically scanned over a large image formed by the camera lens to create the reflectogram, typically 16 Megapixels. Both systems have advantages and disadvantages. The staring IR array cameras offer more flexible collection formats, provide live images, and allow for the use of spectral bandpass filters that can provide reflectograms with better contrast in some cases. They do require a mechanical system for moving the camera or the artwork and post-capture image mosaicking. Scanning back cameras eliminate or reduce the amount of mosaicking and movement of the camera, however the need to minimize light exposure to the artwork requires short integration times, and thus limits the use of spectral bandpass filters. In general, InGaAs cameras are not sensitive in the 1700 to similar to 2300 nm spectral region, which has been identified in prior studies as useful for examining paintings with copper green pigments or thick lead white paints. Prior studies using cameras with sensitivity from 1000 to 2500 nm have found in general the performance at wavelengths longer than 1700 nm degraded relative to the performance at shorter wavelengths. Thus, there is interest in a camera system having improved performance out to 2500 nm that can utilize spectral bandpass filters. Methods: Design requirements for such an improved IRR camera system were determined by first re-examining the optimal spectral window for detecting underdrawing. Thus the wavelength dependence of the clarity of carbon black underdrawings on a chalk ground covered by various paint swatches was measured from 750 to 2500 nm. Second, analysis of the loss of light transmission (1000-2500 nm) and the impact of thermal radiation (3000-5000 nm) on the performance of IR arrays sensitive to the 1000-5000 nm region was analyzed. From the results of these studies, a high sensitivity, near-infrared (1000-2450 nm) indium antimonide (InSb) staring array camera with a cold filter that blocked light >2450 nm was constructed with a color-corrected macro lens capable of holding interference filters. The camera system was characterized in three spectral bands (1100-1400, 1500-1800, and 2100-2400 nm) using test targets and art objects. Results: The experimental results of the contrast difference between the model underdrawing on the chalk ground showed the optimal spectral window for a given pigment varied over the range from 700 to 2300 nm. The contrast in all cases was found to be low from 2300 to 2600 nm and even lower from 2600 to 5000 nm. This is attributable in part to broad absorption by the drying oil paint binder. Performance testing of the IRR camera found high signal-to-noise was observed in all three spectral bands due to the optimized macro lens having high transmission from 1000 to 2600 nm, a 100% efficiency cold stop, and a cold filter that blocks light >2450 nm. The camera was found to have high light sensitivity, requiring only similar to 30 to 50 lx from incandescent lamps having a color temperature of similar to 2060 K. The images produced in each spectral band were sharp, and the modulation at Nyquist (1/2 the sampling frequency) was 20%. IRR images of Old Master paintings, works on paper, and a warped panel painting were collected to test the practical utility of the camera system. Conclusions: The IR camera system presented here was found to produce a variety of high-resolution image products. The ability to extend image collection over the 1700-2450 nm spectral range was found in some examples to provide improved visibility of underdrawing. The ability to register the resulting multi-band IRR images with the color image offers opportunities to produce new image products such as false-color images and principal component images. These image products were found to give new insights into the construction of works of art. A collection scheme based on a 'Z-stack' method was found to solve the problem of producing high-resolution IRR images of highly warped panel paintings.
