How will 14 million people be living and working in Switzerland in 2048? Swiss Lessons gives an insight into laba’s working process as applied to the projected Swiss territory in the year 2048. Starting with the thesis that Switzerland will continue to experience a strong population growth, master students at laba completed a one-year investigation in the 2012/13 academic year, moving from the territorial to the architectural scale over two semesters. The investigation was further based on ETH Studio Basel’s work on the Swiss territory “Switzerland: An Urban Portrait” in which 5 different typological zones were defined. The three-part structure of this book reflects laba’s methodology: part one presents a detailed, interdisci- plinary analysis of a representative north-south strip of Switzerland under five research themes and resulting in a “Territorial Constitutions” for Switzerland in 2048 [Analysis]. Part two documents the field trip in the north-south strip in December 2012 [Trip]. Part three presents 10 architectural projects as a synthesis of the knowledge and experience gained, and as specific architectural propositions [Projects]. These architectural projects act simul- taneously as a “proof of concept” for the Territorial Constitution. laba—Laboratoire Bâle—is an EPFL satellite studio based in Basel since September 2011 under the leader- ship of Professor Harry Gugger.
