Horn Antennas and Dual-Polarized Circuits in Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) Technology

The Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) technology is a very promising candidate to provide widespread commercial solutions for modern communications systems. Its main advantage is the possibility to integrate passive/active components and antennas in the same substrate by using standard manufacturing processes, such as the Printed Circuits Board (PCB) processing technique. Nevertheless, the production of low-cost SIW devices is inherently linked to commercially available substrates and fabrication methods. In particular, these constraints usually limit (a) the frequency range of operation of certain SIW antennas and (b) the possibility of creating multimode structures dealing with orthogonal polarizations. The motivation of this PhD thesis is to overcome these two limitations by proposing innovative SIW components based on PCBs in order to favour the compatibility with existing systems and to lower their cost. Hence, the usage of the SIW technology would be extended towards new applications and scenarios. One type of antenna strongly affected by the limitation (a) is the H-plane SIW horn antenna. While standard horns are employed in many applications and in a wide range of frequencies, their counterparts in SIW technology are restricted to the Ka-band and above. At lower frequencies, commercial substrates are electrically thin and the performances of these end-fire antennas severely diminish. To solve this problem, a novel low-profile SIW horn antenna has been designed to be used at the Ku-band and below, while offering wideband characteristics. In addition, the horn shape has been further optimized to reduce the antenna footprint for a given directivity. In order to overcome the limitation (b), a substrate integrated guide able to simultaneously carry orthogonally polarized modes has been developed: the so called Extended Substrate Integrated Waveguide (ESIW). An ESIW dual-polarized system composed of an Orthomode Transducer (OMT) feeding a dual-polarized horn antenna has been designed and experimentally verified. The overall combination of concepts and ideas proposed in this thesis opens the door towards new SIW components that can increase the capacity, robustness and compactness ofmodern communication systems.

Design of novel radiating elements for SATCOM phased arrays in Ku-Band

The present thesis deals with the design of a planar antenna array for the communication between a civil aircraft (Dassault's Falcon) and an Inmarsat satellite. The final goal is to provide high speed Internet access in X/Ku-Band (8-12GHz / 12-18GHz), and possibly even in K/Ka- Band (18-27GHz / 17-40GHz). The study starts with the Ku-Band only, then evolves towards the transmission band and finishes with their Ka-Band counterparts. The main constraint of the thesis is that the final result should be a low profile antenna that will be easy to integrate below the fuselage of an aircraft. At the same time, the antenna has to provide a beam steering mechanism in order to track the position of the targetted satellite while the aircraft is moving. The usual way to achieve it is to implement some dedicated electronic chips below each radiating element of array. Dassault Aviation has its own alternate and more mechanical oriented solutions. Since the communication system is intended for top-notch business jets produced in small series, cost is not here a decisive criterion. This thesis assumes the existence of the beam-steering system and concentrates on a proof of concept and careful design of the antenna elements that will constitute the final array. They have to satisfy tight constraints in terms of size, return loss, mutual coupling with neighbors, efficiency, radiation pattern and dual circular polarization quality. Printed multilayer antennas have been retained as the best candidates, and themain parts of the thesis have been dedicated to their study. The thesis concludes with the presentation of an apparently completely unrelated and independant topic, namely the simulation of nanoscale 2D planar structures based on Graphene. The rationale for this last chapter is to provide a prospective study of the use of Graphene to create a variable capacitance. This component is always needed in the beamforming network of reconfigurable and scanning arrays. Our laboratory is developing a deep knowledge of the electromagnetic properties of Graphene-based devices and these varicaps could lead to very interesting applications in high frequencies, once the Graphene technology has definitely progressed. Thanks to electrostatics Green's functions, a variable capacitor based on Graphene has been simulated, and a Quantumeffect -the Quantum capacitance of Graphene- has been successfully tackled from a numerical point of view.

Multi-band reflectarray antennas in Ku and THz frequency bands

Printed reflectarrays are low-cost, low-profile high gain antennas demonstrating distinctive advantages over conventional parabolic reflectors and phased-arrays. The flat, low weight reflecting surface of a reflectarray makes it an attractive alternative with respect to bulky parabolic reflectors specially for space and satellite systems. As compared to high-cost phased-array antennas, with incorporation of solid state devices, reflectarrays are able to demonstrate electronic beam scanning in a very low-cost way. A distinctive advantage of a reflectarray antenna lies in its potential to be readily designed as a multi-band antenna which demonstrates independent performance at several frequencies. A characteristic that is difficult to achieve using conventional parabolic reflectors. The aim of this thesis is to present low-cost, simple, multi-band printed reflectarray antennas in Ku and THz frequency bands. In Ku band we present a dual-band reflectarray performing at 12 and 14 GHz and a quad-band reflectarray antenna performing at 12, 13, 14 and 15.5 GHz. The presented prototypes benefit from the advantage of having a single-layer structure which reduces the design complexity as well as the fabrication cost. In addition, multi-band reflectarrays are able to perform at any polarization due to the dual-linear polarized design of their unit-cells. Furthermore, the design of the unit-cell is such that, at each frequency, the phase response depends on only one parameter of the cell. This advantage eliminates the need for time consuming optimizations. Based on proposed unit-cells dual-band and quad-band reflectarrays with arbitrary beam direction versus frequency have been simulated, fabricated and measured. Simulation and measurement results as well demonstrate the satisfactory independent performance of the prototypes at each intended frequency. In THz region, for the first time we present a tri-band unit-cell based on which reflectarray prototypes performing at the three frequencies 0.7, 1.0 and 1.5 THz, are designed. The presented reflectarrays possess all the advantages of those designed for Ku band with the additional advantage of having high resistivity silicon as the substrate thanks to a sophisticated fabrication process. The use of silicon as substrate is a big advantage since it facilitates the integration of solid state devices for reconfigurability. Based on the proposed unit-cell reflectarray samples with arbitrary independent performance at each frequency are designed, simulated, fabricated and measured. Measurement results obtained using a THz-TDS (Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy) measurement system, demonstrate the satisfactory independent performance of the reflectarray samples at each frequency. This thesis also presents a dual-band, dual-polarized reconfigurable unit-cell for beam-scanning reflectarray operating at 12 and 14 GHz. The cell however suffers from high-cross-polarization level. A chessboard cell arrangement is proposed to mitigate the high cross-polarization level at the reflectarray far-field region. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the chessboard arrangement in eliminating the cross-polarization allowing the design of a low-cross polarization reconfigurable reflectarray antenna out of a unit-cell with high cross-polarization level. Finally, the thesis presents the concept of a versatile flat prism which is a reflectarray with a pre-designed frequency-scanning behaviour. The limitations and challenges as well as solutions for implementation of such a device are presented and discussed.

Proof of concept of a dual-band circularly-polarized RF MEMS beam-switching reflectarray

In this communication we propose the concept of a circularly polarized reflectarray (RA) antenna capable of independent beam-switching in both K and Ka bands. The RA unit cell comprises one microstrip ring per each operation frequency. Each ring is integrated with six equally spaced series RF micro electro-mechanical systems (RF MEMS) switches, which allows implementing the sequential rotation principle formerly used in circularly-polarized RA for single-frequency operation. A detailed design is proposed, considering the best relative arrangement of the rings corresponding to each frequency, the accurate modeling of the RF MEMS switches, and the full-wave simulation of the full array. The designed RA is implemented on a 4-inch quartz wafer and comprises 109 K-band and 124 Ka-band split-rings. Two prototypes representing two frozen states of the reconfigurable antenna are fabricated and measured. The designed RA can +/- 120 degrees provide progressive phase difference in both operation bands exhibiting beam switching to +/- 35 degrees and +/- 24 degrees off the broad-side in K and Ka bands respectively. The performance of the designed antenna is verified by the agreement of the measured and simulated radiation patterns.
