Abstract

This work reports a simple, miniaturized optical sensing module for liquid refractometry. It is based on a stable Fabry-Perot resonator consisting of two silicon cylindrical mirrors with a cylindrical lens in the core. The lens is formed by a capillary tube through which the analyte to be analyzed passes. This setup enables volume refractometry, where light propagates through the sample realizing high interaction depth. The cylindrical surfaces achieve light confinement, reducing the light escaping loss encountered in classical cavities with straight mirrors; and hence high quality factor (Q) over 1,000 is attained. Exploiting this high Q, we adopt uncommon refraction index (RI) measurement criterion: we operate at a fixed wavelength and detect the power drop caused as a consequence to the spectral shift with RI change. Performing experimental testing using a tunable laser and a power-meter, the normalized spectra for different mixture ratios of acetone and deionized water are obtained. The wavelength corresponding to the maximal power transmission from pure acetone is taken as a reference. A vertical line at this wavelength cuts the successive transmission curves and enables measuring the power drop in the linear region, and from it the refractive index change Delta n above the refractive index of the reference solution can be determined for 0.0023

Amazing and beautiful optical effects are present in Nature. Some examples are the iridescent colors produced by peacocks, butterflies and beetles. While the simulations of some of these structures have already been realized, only a few elements have been fabricated. We are interested to understand and to reproduce some of these amazing optical properties. Applications such as security or decorative elements in different fields like jewelery or horology can be imagined. SEM pictures of the structure of these animals show a frequent combination of periodic or pseudo-periodic elements such as interference filters, multilayer reflectors, microlenses and gratings. The different elements combine angular and spectral effects. This combination enables strong optical effects for a large range of viewing angles and spectra. Different technologies such as standard photolithography, recording of interference patterns, transfer of photoresist structures in glass substrates, replications, hot embossing and spincoating were used to fabricate a variety of optical elements. The fabricated elements were produced with polymer materials because of their ease of use, and the possibility to build multilevel structures with replication methods. A drawback is the small refractive index difference possible between polymers and compared to air. In the first part, different combinations of polymer micro- and nano-optical elements such as corrugated gratings, multilayer Bragg reflectors, microlens arrays, micro-prisms arrays and diffusers were successfully fabricated. Poly (vinyl alcohol) and poly (N-vinycarbazole) with refractive indices of 1.56 and 1.72, respectively, at a wavelength of 500nm were used to fabricate the polymer multilayer reflectors. The micro-optical elements used were: microlenses with diameter between 32 μm and 250 μm and around 20 μm height; prisms with 50 μm period and 25 μm height. The angularly dependent reflectivity of the different fabricated elements was studied. Thanks to the close combination of diffractive, refractive and reflective micro- and nano-optical elements, non-standard artificial visual color effects were produced. The fabricated elements were modeled with different tools according to the dimensions of the different optical elements. Ray tracing analysis was used in the case with micro-optical elements while the Fourier modal method permitted simulation of the interaction of the light with the periodic nano-structures. The specific effects of the variation of the different parameters were highlighted, the basic principles and the limitation of the polymer technology were identified. In the second part, the optical modeling tools and the fabrication technologies developed were used to model and fabricate polymer light emitting diodes in a distributed feedback regime. The optical properties of the different layers were modeled and the physical dimensions of elements with active conductive polymers me-LPPP and F8 were calculated, fabricated and tested. The sensitive dimensions and parameters were underlined. Polymer materials permitted rapid fabrication of complex and innovative optical elements with very simple technologies like spin-coating and replication methods. These technologies allow the combination of nano-optical elements with dimensions of the order of a hundred nanometers with micro-optical elements with dimension of the order of about ten to one hundred microns.

Design, Fabrication and Characterization of Mid-Infrared Strip Waveguide for Laser Spectroscopy in Liquid Environments

Optical sensors based on the interaction between molecular vibrations and mid infrared radiations attracted high attentions in the last decades. In this study, we present the development of a waveguide evanescent field sensor based on the absorption spectroscopy in liquid environments. The device consists of a single mode strip waveguide integrated with a microfluidic system. With a quantum cascade laser at the wavelength of 5.8 μm, we demonstrate the detection of cocaine dissolved in tetrachloroethylene (PCE). Mid infrared germanium waveguides on silicon have been proposed but not experimentally demonstrated. Here we realize this new type of waveguide with a monocrystalline germanium layer on a silicon substrate (Ge-on-Si) with standard photolithography and reactive ion etching. It is designed to be singlemode in transverse magnetic polarization at 5.8 μm. We used a method based on the Fabry-Perot resonance to measure the propagation loss, and the achieved lowest loss is 2.4 dB/cm. The bending loss was measured to be 0.12 dB per 90∘bend with the radius of 115 μm. A microfluidic chip made from a UV-curable adhesive is integrated to the Ge-on- Si waveguide. This is the first integration of this waveguide with a microfluidic system. Solutions of cocaine in PCE flow in the microfluidic channel and absorb the light in the evanescent field. A reference waveguide and an integrated Y- junction eliminate the noise from coupling fluctuations, and the limit of detection is calculated to be 5 μg/ml. Mid infrared photonics can be further developed based on the platform of Ge-on- Si waveguides. We demonstrate a detection of refractive index changes with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer integrated with a microfluidic system. Subwavelength structures for antireflection of the waveguide facets are also experimentally tested. We foresee an increasing development and applications based on this waveguide in the mid infrared.

III-Nitride Semiconductor Photonic Nanocavities on Silicon

Optical nanocavities enhance light-matter interaction due to their high quality factors (Q) and small modal volumes (V). The control of light-matter interaction lies at the heart of potential applications for integrated optical circuits, including optical communication, quantum computation, biophotonics, and optical projection. Many of these applications could benefit from wide band gap III-nitride semiconductor material, which already forms the basis of industrial lighting technology based on blue light-emitting diodes. Cleanroom fabrication and optical spectroscopy comprise the laboratory work in this thesis. Air-suspended III-nitride nanocavities are fabricated using electron beam lithography, reactive ion etching, and vapor phase etching from thin (< 300 nm) III-nitride epilayers grown on silicon (111) substrates by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. An embedded single InGaN/GaN quantum well serves as an internal light source during micro-photoluminescence experiments. Strain and heating effects are analyzed by micro-Raman spectroscopy. A dedicated quantum optics laboratory is constructed in order to study nanocavities and quantum emitters in III-nitrides at short wavelengths (lambda < 500 nm). Photonic crystal nanocavities exhibit the highest figure-of-merit for light-matter interaction enhancement, Q/V. However, in contrast to silicon and gallium arsenide nanocavities working at telecommunication wavelengths, III-nitride based nanocavities underperform theoretical Q estimates by nearly three orders of magnitude at short wavelengths (lambda = 430 - 500 nm). This thesis accounts for this discrepancy by combined experimental and theoretical studies of nanobeam fabrication statistics. Surface state absorption is found to be the primary factor limiting Q at short wavelengths. Surface effects are studied in the microdisk resonator geometry. UV photoinduced desorption of oxygen gas from the III-nitride surface redshifts and broadens whispering gallery mode resonances over minute timescales. Oxygen desorption incurs additional optical absorption losses up to 100 cm^{-1}. The redshift and broadening is nearly reversible upon the introduction of oxygen into the measurement environment, implicating oxygen in passivation of the III-nitride surface. Finally, optimized surface passivation techniques using rapid thermal processing and conformal chemical vapor deposition more than double state-of-the-art Q of GaN-based microdisk resonators to beyond Q=10,000 in the blue spectral range. The results demonstrate the capabilities and limitations of III-nitride materials for optical nanocavities and photonic integrated circuits at short wavelengths.
