Abstract

We present a systematic study of the crystal-field interactions in the LiRF4 (R = Gd, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb) family of rare-earth magnets. Using detailed inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we have been able to quantify the transition energies and wave functions for each system. This allows us to quantitatively describe the high-temperature susceptibility measurements for the series of materials and make predictions based on a mean-field approach for the low-temperature thermal and quantum phase transitions. We show that coupling between crystal field and phonon states leads to line-shape broadening in LiTmF4 and level splitting in LiYbF4. Furthermore, using high-resolution neutron scattering from LiHoF4, we find anomalous broadening of crystal-field excitations which we attribute to magnetoelastic coupling.

Investigating field-induced magnetic order in Han purple by neutron scattering up to 25.9 T

BaCuSi2O6 is a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) quantum antiferromagnet containing three different types of stacked, square-lattice bilayer hosting spin-1/2 dimers. Although this compound has been studied extensively over the last two decades, the critical applied magnetic field required to close the dimer spin gap and induce magnetic order, which exceeds 23 T, has to date precluded any kind of neutron scattering investigation. However, the HFM/EXED instrument at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin made this possible at magnetic fields up to 25.9 T. Thus we have used HFM/EXED to investigate the field-induced ordered phase, in particular to look for quasi-2D physics arising from the layered structure and from the different bilayer types. From neutron diffraction data, we determined the global dependence of the magnetic order parameter on both magnetic field and temperature, finding a form consistent with 3D quantum critical scaling; from this we deduce that the quasi-2D interactions and nonuniform layering of BaCuSi2O6 are not anisotropic enough to induce hallmarks of 2D physics. From neutron spectroscopy data, we measured the dispersion of the strongly Zeeman-split magnetic excitations, finding good agreement with the zero-field interaction parameters of BaCuSi2O6. We conclude that HFM/EXED allowed a significant extension in the application of neutron scattering techniques to the field range above 20 T and in particular opened previously unavailable possibilities in the study of field-induced magnetic quantum phase transitions.

Probing Entangled States of the Nuclear-Electronic Quantum Magnet LiHoF₄

Two objects are entangled when their quantum mechanical wavefunctions cannot be written in a separable product form. Entangling dissimilar quantum objects, or hybridization, has been suggested as a promising route to efficient quantum information processors, but mostly realized on a limited scale. Hybrid nuclear-electronic many-body systems remain a largely unexplored challenge to both experiments and theories. The prototypical transverse-field Ising ferromagnet LiHoF4 is an ideal platform to address this issue. The Ising model is considered as an archetype both for the investigation of quantum criticality and for the evaluation of quantum simulators. The hyperfine coupling strength of a Ho ion is exceptionally large, promoting a strong hybridization or entanglement between the nuclear and electronic moments. The magnetic coupling between the Ho ions that leads to ferromagnetic ordering is predominantly through long-range dipole interactions, while nearest-neighbor exchange interaction is negligibly weak. Applying a transverse field induces a zero temperature quantum phase transition driven by quantum fluctuations. Altogether LiHoF4 represents a unique nuclear-electronic quantum magnet, whose wavefunctions can be readily obtained by diagonalizing the Hamiltonian using the mean-field approximation. In this thesis we develop an experimental setup to probe the entangled nuclear-electronic states in a model transverse-field Ising system LiHoF4. Using magnetic resonance the field and temperature evolution of the nuclear-electronic states are successfully traced across the whole phase diagram. We develop a theoretical framework based on mean-field calculations which provides close agreement with the experimental observations. Having established experimentally that the mean-field wavefunctions are an excellent approximation of the actual wavefunction, we used them to calculate the ground-state entanglement entropy between the electronic and nuclear magnetic moments. We find that the entanglement entropy between the nuclear and electronic moments exhibits a peak at the quantum phase transition. This suggests that the electronic entanglement is encoded onto each nuclear-electronic state. Our results pave the way for new theoretical and experimental investigations of quantum entanglement.

The collective behavior of systems consisting of interacting dipoles is a subject of considerable studies. The anisotropic nature of such interactions opens an arena to explore fundamental questions in correlated electron physics, ranging from quantum entanglement, phase transitions, spin glass states to disorder and fluctuations. LiHoF4 is a textbook example of a ferromagnetic Ising-dipolar model, offering a simple and well-understood Hamiltonian. The system undergoes a quantum phase transition (QPT) in a field transverse to the easy axis, which induces quantum fluctuations between the ground state doublet. Dilution of Ho sites with non-magnetic Yttrium ions lowers only the transition temperature (Tc), and eventually lead to spin-glass state. While Tc decreases in a linear fashion, as expected from simple mean-field (MF) calculation, critical field decreases much faster. The behavior upon dilution has been pointed out to be related to randomness and off-diagonal dipolar interactions. In chapter 5 of this thesis I quantify the deviation of experimental results from neutron scattering studies from MF prediction, with the aim that this analysis can be used in future theoretical efforts towards a quantitative description. The aim of this thesis, however, deals with LiErF4 which is an unexplored planar dipolar antiferromagnetic member of LiReF4 family, with TN ≃ 370 mK. The system undergoes a QPT in an applied field H∥c = 4.0±0.1 kOe, confirmed by a softening of the characteristic excitations at Hc. A combined neutron scattering, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility study reveals a novel non-MF critical scaling of the classical phase transition, belonging to the 2DXY /h4 universality class. In accord with this, the quantum phase transition at Hc exhibits a three-dimensional classical behavior. The effective dimensional reduction may be a consequence of the intrinsic anisotropic nature of the dipolar interaction. Four-fold anisotropy and degeneracy breaking could be due to the "order-by-disorder" phenomena, which could open a gap in dispersion of the magnetic excitations.
