Abstract

Après des décennies flamboyantes suivies d'une longue agonie post-industrielle, Motorcity est officiellement en faillite. La métropole du Michigan est en ruine financièrement et sa spatialité s'effondre. Les bâtiments abandonnés et pillés jonchent le parcellaire. Le centre-ville est amputé de la moitié de ses édifices, le bâti atrophié laisse à peine percevoir l'empreinte de son plan directeur initial. Dans ce contexte et ce paysage urbain mutilé, le projet établi une réflexion sur la question de la reconstruction. Il s'implante au cœur du quartier du divertissement au centre de Détroit et propose quatre interventions précises liées à un thème programmatique et architectural spécifique. Une enceinte sportive inspirée de l'architecture du spectacle, un édifice dédié à la culture de la musique électronique, des parkings et des logements prennent possession de parcelles inoccupées du quartier. Chacun des fragments du projet est nourri de références se trouvant à Détroit. L'architecture délabrée et puissante de Motorcity forme un ensemble de proportions, atmosphères, matières, lumières qui a fortement contribué à l'élaboration des quatre interventions architecturales; imaginer des bâtiments nouveaux, mais qui appartiennent à leur environnement et continuent d'écrire son histoire.
