Located on Australia's east coast, the metropolis surrounds Sydney Harbour and extends about towards the Blue Mountains to the west, Hawkesbury to the north, the Royal National Park and Macarthur to the south and south-west. It is a relatively simple system based on few empirical data, giving objective criteria. While it was first designed for tropical and subtropical areas, the system now applies globally.
