Fabrication and Characterization of Functional ALD Metal Oxide Thin Films for Solar Applications

Motivated to revolutionize our today's fossil fuels based energy production, my work concentrated on the investigation of promising low-cost materials for photoelectrochemical hydrogen production and photovoltaic electricity generation. Hydrogen presents a fully scalable energy storage solution while photovoltaics have the biggest potential for clean electricity generation. Both are combined in the hydrogen-based economy that will be introduced in Chapter 1. A clear way to achieve this revolutionary technological and societal goal is through fundamental understanding of the complex electronic properties of the most promising low-cost semiconductors offering strong visible light absorption. The modern fields of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting and photovoltaics have a lot in common: materials, scientific concepts and theoretical background. In other words, their complementarity was a strong motivation for the interdisciplinary work presented in this thesis. The main focus in this thesis is on hematite, which is a promising low-cost material offering visible light absorption and the chemical robustness for photoelectrochemical water oxidation. However, it has two major drawbacks: firstly, for a semiconductor, hematite has extremely low electron and hole mobilities. This makes it challenging to collect charges that are photo-generated deep within the hematite layer and far away from the surface. Secondly, water oxidation appears to be limited by trap states located in the mid band gap region. Chapter 3 addresses these drawbacks showing that doping of hematite from the underlayer, surface passivation from annealing treatments and/or overlayers are all key parameters to consider for the design of more efficient iron oxide electrodes. By better understanding the underlying principles of over- and underlayers, I was able to design multilayered hematite photoanodes comprised of functional thin films to obtain a significant reduction in the water oxidation overpotential. Whereas hematite thin film electrodes were fabricated by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis in Chapter 3, I introduce a new atomic layer deposition (ALD) route towards crystalline, highly photoactive, phase pure and impurity-free hematite films in Chapter 4. With this thin film model system I could precisely demonstrate that only the 10 nm thick space charge region of hematite is photoactive, which presents a major challenge when considering that around 60-70 nm are needed to achieve sufficient light absorption as shown in Chapter 5. In light of this charge transport limitation, I propose and demonstrate new host-guest electrode designs that would be indispensible for the realization of high performance ALD hematite photoanodes. To complement these studies, I demonstrate in Chapter 5 the basis for an optoelectronic modeling of the hematite PEC device that helps identifying and eliminating major optical and electronic losses in the PEC cell. In Chapter 6 my work on ALD SnO2 as an electron selective layer (ESL) led to major advances in low-cost flat hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells. The tin oxide layer is found to resolve the problem of an energy band misalignment encountered with the previously used ALD TiO2 ESL in addition to stabilizing the photovoltaic performance. Hysteresis-free solar conversion efficiencies of up to 18% have been achieved for flat devices paving the way towards low-cost flat film perovskite solar cells that will easily surpass the photovoltaic performance of polycrystalline silicon solar cells in the near future.

Coupling of electrocatalysts to photoabsorbers for solar fuels production

The direct transformation of sunlight into fuels and chemicals has attracted considerable attention for the potential impact on the storage of solar energies at large scales and the reduction of CO2 emissions. More than 80% of our current global energy consumption comes from the burning of non-renewable fossil fuels which produces enormous quantities of CO2 and contributes to global warming. We believe today that the key to reduce our dependence on exhaustible natural resources and limit the emission of greenhouse gases is the transition to CO2-free renewable energy sources. However, harvesting of energy from renewable sources (i.e. solar, wind, tidal) is intermittent and the deployment of devices for their transformation into useful forms of energy (i.e. electricity, chemicals, fuels, biomass) in a global scale is conditioned upon the improvement in efficiency of the energy storage mechanisms. A promising approach to store energy is the use of sunlight to drive the production of hydrogen fuel from water. Hydrogen produced from water and sunlight can be transformed back to electricity on demand or be used to generate mechanical energy in cars to power the transportation industry. The oxidation of hydrogen generates useable energy and at the same time exhaust clean, carbon-free water as the only product. Therefore, the production of hydrogen using a renewable energy source in an efficient and inexpensive device has the potential to discourage the continued use of fossil fuels and improve our environment. The viability of any mechanism for the storage of sunlight as fuel will depend on the reduction of energy penalties during the transformation process. Electrocatalysts are advanced materials that bring into one active site electrons and molecules in the appropriate orientation to lower activation energy barriers, accelerate rate of transformations and improve overall efficiencies for chemical reactions. The best catalysts for water splitting are precious metals such as Pt, Ir and Ru, which show superior rates of reaction at low overpotentials. However, these noble metals are too expensive and scarce for large scale applications. This thesis summarizes our recent research in the preparation, characterization, and application of Earth-abundant electrocatalysts for solar water splitting. Although in the last decade a great number of efficient and inexpensive electrocatalysts have been reported, methods for the deposition of these materials on the surface of photoabsorbers are rarely reported. This work shows various simple and scalable techniques for the deposition of hydrogen and oxygen evolving electrocatalysts on the surface of photocathodes and photoanodes, respectively. Surface-protected photocahodes were activated for solar hydrogen production in alkaline conditions with MoS2+x, Ni-Mo and Mo2C. A novel method for the deposition of an optically transparent amorphous iron nickel oxide oxygen evolution electrocatalyst is also reported. The catalyst was deposited on both thin film and high-aspect ratio nanostructured hematite photoanodes. The low catalyst loading combined with its high activity at low overpotential results in significant improvement on the onset potential for photoelectrochemical water oxidation. This transparent catalyst further enables the preparation of a stable hematite/perovskite solar cell tandem device, which performs unassisted water splitting.

Cu-based p-type Oxide Photocathodes for Solar Hydrogen Production

The actualization of a hydrogen economy requires cost-effective and environmentally benign solutions to hydrogen production. Chemical energy in the form of hydrogen is more interesting than electricity to satisfy our ever-increasing energy demand because it can be stored more easily. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is a carbon-neutral process which converts solar energy into chemical energy (hydrogen) using a light-absorbing semiconducting material to generate the necessary photovoltage to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. So far, record efficiencies in solar-to-hydrogen conversion have been achieved using p-type semiconductors, but only with very expensive materials. However, the spread of this technology relies on the development of semiconductor electrodes made of cheap and abundant elements that are stable in water for a reasonable long time. The semiconductors investigated in this thesis are p-type copper based oxides. Hydrogen production is measured by the photocurrent of water reduction at the semiconductor surface. In the first chapter a roundup of the basics of photoelectrochemical hydrogen generation is presented. In Chapter 2, ternary oxides presenting the delafossite crystal structure are explored, a class of materials that is expected to be stable in water under reducing conditions and that has never been studied for PEC photocathodes. The main achievements of this thesis are presented in Chapters 3-6. It is shown that CU2O, a semiconductor notoriously unstable in aqueous solutions yet a very efficient light absorber, can be stabilized against photocathodic degradation and thus used for water reduction. A preliminary optimization study is carried out to understand the synthetic parameters that control the photoactivity of cuprous oxide obtained by electrodeposition. The deposition current density, temperature and bath pH are changed to find the conditions where photoactivity is optimized. They most photoactive films are then characterized in terms of their optical and electrical properties, which are relevant to the photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (Chapter 3). The surface protection technique consists in the growth of ultrathin oxide layers (about 10-20 nm) by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on the CU2O electrodes (Chapter 4). This powerful technique enables a uniform and continuous coverage of a substrate and a control of the thickness at the atomic scale. Therefore, the passivation technique developed in this thesis can be applied to CU2O morphologies much more complex than those employed in this study and most probably to other semiconductors as well. Photocurrents up to 7.6 mA cm-2 are achieved using CU2O electrodes protected with amorphous Al-doped ZnO and TiCh. and decorated with a Pt catalyst. This photocurrent equals half of the maximum photocurrent possible for C112O and is the highest photocurrent ever measured for an oxide-based photoelectrode for PEC water splitting under AM 1.5 illumination. Further improvements to extend the performance over longer timescales and improve the overall photocathode stability are presented in Chapter 5. The concept of surface passivation against reductive decomposition of a semiconductor is proved for water splitting and important progresses are made in optimizing and understanding the key parameters for preserving the photoactivity of the material under operation. Particularly, the studies presented in Chapter 5 focus on the protective layers, exploring the relationship between the electrical properties of the ALD layers and their chemical stability in different electrolytes and after different temperature treatments. Although some decay in the hydrogen evolution over time is still observed, the last results on the protected electrodes show conversion efficiencies of 60% of the initial value after 10 hours of testing at the standard potential of hydrogen evolution, while for the unprotected electrodes the efficiency drops to 0% after a few minutes.

Solar photoelectrolysis of water with translucent nano-structured hematite photoanodes

In the context of the diminishing fossil energy resources and global warming, much research is focused on sustainable energy sources. The research that is presented in this thesis falls in this category as it contributes to the development of a device that stores solar energy into a chemical fuel. This device is based on the photoelectrolysis of water in a tandem-cell that produces hydrogen and oxygen under illumination of sunlight. This can be achieved by connecting a larger band gap semiconductor photoanode for oxygen evolution (such as WO3 with Eg = 2.6 eV or Fe2O3 with Eg = 2.0 eV) in series with two dye sensitized solar cells and a hydrogen evolving cathode. Red and green light transmitted by the photoanode is absorbed by the dye, so that a large part of the solar spectrum can be utilized. Fe2O3 absorbs a larger part of the visible solar spectrum as compared to WO3, which results in a 3 times higher theoretical conversion efficiency for the tandem-cell. However, the small hole diffusion length in Fe2O3 of 2 to 20nm is seen as an important reason for the lower practical conversion efficiencies reported in literature. The aim of this thesis project is to improve the photooxidation activity of iron oxide photoanodes in order to improve the practical conversion efficiency of the tandem-cell. For this purpose we have prepared thin films of nano-structured iron oxide with various deposition methods and characterized their performance on the photooxidation of water. The photoanodes are measured in aqueous solution of 1 M NaOH (pH=13.6) under illumination of simulated sunlight (AM 1.5 global of 1000 W/m2). We report the photocurrent at the reversible water oxidation potential of 1.23 V vs. RHE. The first chapter briefly discusses the potential of hydrogen as an energy carrier in a global hydrogen economy and places the tandem-cell in this context. In chapter two the current status of photoelectrolysis of water with iron oxide is briefly reviewed. The experimental set-up for the measurement of the photocurrent under simulated sun light and for the acquisition of photocurrent action spectra are described. This chapter also deals with the spectral mismatch error that is associated with the solar simulator calibration procedure. Chapter three introduces a new solution strategy for efficient photoanodes based on a nanocomposite structure with a hematite film thickness that is commensurate to the hole diffusion length alleviating the problem of poor charge transport. For this purpose nano-porous films of doped and undoped tinoxide and arrays of perpendicularly oriented nanorods of the same material are conformally coated with a thin film of hematite (2-20nm). These electrodes are characterized by SEM, TEM, XEDS elemental analysis, Raman spectroscopy in addition to the photoelectrochemical response. Although, evidence is presented for the successful preparation of the nano-composite structures with a sufficient optical density, the photocurrents obtained from these electrodes are very low. In chapter four we report on thin silicon-doped nanocrystalline α-Fe2O3 films (thickness of 250-500nm) that have been deposited on F-doped SnO2 substrates by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) and chemical vapor deposition at atmospheric pressure (APCVD). The photoanodes prepared by USP and APCVD gave a photocurrent of 1.17 and 1.45 mA/cm2 respectively. The morphology of the α-Fe2O3 was strongly influenced by the silicon doping, decreasing the feature size of the mesoscopic film. The silicon-doped α-Fe2O3 nano-leaflets show a preferred orientation with the (001) basal plane normal to the substrate. Chapter five treats the preparation and characterization of hematite photoanodes prepared by an improved APCVD setup. Under illumination water is oxidized at the Fe2O3 electrode with higher efficiency (IPCE = 42% at 370 nm and 2.2 mA/cm2) than at the best reported single crystalline Fe2O3 electrodes. This unprecedented efficiency is in part attributed to the dendritic nanostructure which minimizes the distance photo generated holes have to diffuse to reach the Fe2O3/electrolyte interface while still allowing efficient light absorption. Part of the gain in efficiency is obtained by depositing a thin insulating SiO2 interfacial layer between the SnO2 substrate and the Fe2O3 film, and a catalytic cobalt monolayer on the Fe2O3 surface. A mechanistic model for water photooxidation is presented, involving stepwise accumulation of four holes by two vicinal iron or cobalt surface sites. In chapter six we present a detailed investigation of the dependency of the photocurrent response on film thickness and feature size of doped and undoped hematite photoanodes prepared by the APCVD setup discussed in chapter five, in absence of a redox catalyst. Evidence is presented of an unusual high donor density of 1020 cm-3 in the silicon doped photoanodes which would allow a space charge layer to be formed inside the nano-sized features of the polycrystalline film. This suggests that electric field induced charge separation could be an important reason for the photocurrent improvement reported in chapter five. In addition, a strong correlation between feature size and the intensity of a Raman band at 660cm-1 is presented and discussed in the context of disorder in the crystal structure. Chapter seven presents a study of the influence that the deposition parameters have on the photoresponse, morphology, and crystal structure of films prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. Films are characterized by SEM, XEDS elemental analysis, TEM, XRD, Mössbauer and Raman spectroscopy. A strong correlation is found between the formation of β-Fe2O3 (Bixbyite) and low photocurrents. Silicon doped films enable the electron transport across a film thickness of 1300nm. The absorbed-photon-to-current-conversion-efficiency (APCE) increases with film thickness below 150nm, which indicates an increased recombination near the substrate interface. This could be an important reason for the low photoresponse of nanocomposite electrodes studied in chapter three. In chapter eight we draw some general conclusions with regards to the future development of these photoanodes.
