Abstract

Reinforced concrete flat slabs constitute one of the most common and efficient modern construction methods. The design of such structural system might be governed by a brittle failure in the vicinity of the slab-column connection associated to punching shear. The arrangement of transverse reinforcement in the critical zone increases both the strength and the deformation capacity of the slab-column connection. Recent advances on the understanding of the punching phenomena lead nowadays to a better approach of their differences in efficiency. One of the main parameters identified as governing for the performance of this specific reinforcement is the quality of its anchorage and bond, influencing the development of cracks in the shear-critical region. Such characteristic is generally defined through force-slip relationships and is strongly influenced by the local state of stress and strain. Although the activation of reinforcement often takes place within already cracked concrete for many structural members, the conventional approaches supporting code formulations are still almost exclusively based on tests performed on uncracked specimens. In the coming years, an increased emphasis should be placed on the study of the performance of reinforcing details in such severe conditions, with the aim to improve the knowledge of this rather underrated but critical problematic. Several experimental works were thus conducted in the frame of this thesis on the role of the anchorage of the transverse reinforcement in punching shear phenomenon. A programme of pull-out tests on actual detailing solutions was performed in cracked conditions similar to those developing in slabs at the vicinity of the columns. The results highlighted notable differences amongst the evaluated types of anchorages, confirming therefore the various levels of performance observed in punching tests. The activation of this specific reinforcement is investigated through tests on full-scale slab specimens provided with extended measurements of the force and crack openings. The use of an innovative reinforcing setup allowed to track the concrete and steel contributions in the punching phenomenon, providing the experimental information required to validate the main assumptions of the Critical Shear Crack Theory for the failure mode within the shear-reinforced area. Observations on straight bars with in-plane cracking supported the development of analytical formulations to evaluate the reduction of performance âin terms of strength and stiffnessâ for various anchorage details by analogous considerations to the aggregate interlock approaches. The model is validated through a refined numerical method and the main test results available from literature. Such developments can be partially used within the frame of the Critical Shear Crack Theory, which calculates the contribution of the shear reinforcement in the punching strength âfor the failure mode of interestâ with a physical model of activation for the transverse elements. The latter contains a number of general assumptions âperfect bond and anchorage conditions, simplified crack kinematicsâ which can be improved and refined on the basis of the experimental results of the present research. Proposals are formulated to take into account in the existing model a more realistic activation of the transverse reinforcement in the slab during punching, and thus to improve the understanding and the predictions associated to this failure mode.

The mechanics of shear failures in RC slabs based on refined measurements

Reinforced concrete planar members, as slabs and shells, are structural elements commonly used in the construction technique, which are typically designed without the arrangement of shear reinforcement. Despite the fact that this solution allows for fast and economic construction, the absence of shear reinforcement can give rise to the potential localization of strains within a critical shear crack and eventually to the shear failure of the member. In the case of redundant systems, most research on the mechanics of shear failures has been devoted to the strength of the member, neglecting in many cases the development of shear deformations due to inclined cracking as well as the redistributions of internal forces, which are instrumental for the analysis of the response of these members. The contribution to the state-of-the-art includes a series of theoretical works explaining the observed responses for a series of experimental programmes. These experimental campaigns comprise tests in tension, shear tests in one- and two-way slabs as well as punching tests. For their instrumentation, in addition to classical measurement devices, Fibre-Optic Measurements and Digital Image Correlation were intensively used.This thesis starts by revisiting the basis of the interaction between reinforcement and concrete. A series of bond tests show the stress concentrations occurring near the ribs and its complex transfer of forces with the surrounding concrete. In addition, tests on beams failing in shear show a complex interaction between bond stresses and kinking on the reinforcement due to the development of dowel action. These phenomena are normally neglected for concrete design due to the ductile nature of reinforcement, but may be relevant for fatigue and negative tension-stiffening effects.An important step in the knowledge is performed on the understanding of the shear response with respect to the characterization of the deformations in concrete members. Based on a series of test results, a complete description of the deformation field (including shear strains) is presented. On that basis, a rational model is proposed, consistent with the mechanical model of the Critical Shear Crack Theory. This model allows for a precise description of the response and also to describe the through-thickness distribution of the shear deformation.A general frame for modelling of reinforced concrete slabs is thus presented accounting for the redistribution of internal forces during propagation of the shear crack. This approach is used to investigate a testing programme performed on three wide slabs, analysing in a scientific manner the influence of the width of the member on the shear resistance. The detailed experimental data allow to capture the crack propagation and internal forces redistributions. Clear conclusions and answers are obtained, showing the influence of the shape of the failure surface and of its propagation on the load-carrying capacity.The research ends with a final investigation on the dowelling action of compression reinforcement, with an application to slabs failing in punching. Based on a large testing programme including eleven axisymmetric punching tests, an analytical approach is developed to estimate the contribution of the dowel action on the load-carrying capacity. This approach is formulated within the frame of the Critical Shear Crack Theory, and is incorporated in a consistent and efficient manner for design purposes.

Reinforced concrete bridge deck slabs without shear reinforcement can be subjected to concentrated or distributed loads of important magnitude. Under these loads their structural response is not always ductile. In particular under concentrated loads their deformation capacity can be limited by shear or punching shear failures, which prevent them from reaching the ultimate load predicted by pure flexural analysis. This problem has been studied in this research by means of an important experimental program and theoretical modeling. The limited ductility of bridge decks was investigated by means of full scale tests on bridge deck cantilevers under groups of concentrated loads. Six large scale laboratory tests were performed on two bridge deck cantilevers with a span of 2.8 m and a length of 10.0 m. All slabs failed in a brittle manner, in shear or punching shear. The theoretical flexural failure load estimated using the yield-line method was never attained. Despite the brittle failures, the results of tests on cantilevers have shown that some amount of yielding can occur before the shear failure and therefore reduce the shear strength. This effect was quantified on eleven full scale tests on slab strips without shear reinforcement with a length of 8.4 m. The results clearly show that the increase of plastic strains in the flexural reinforcement leads to a reduction of the shear strength. The measured rotation capacity of the plastic hinge was thus limited by a shear failure. A particular problem of bridge deck slabs is the introduction of concentrated loads applied by wheels with pneumatic pressure. Punching shear with these loads is usually treated in a manner similar to punching by a column. A punching shear test was performed with a concentrated load simulating a vehicle wheel with pneumatic pressure to investigate the differences. It appears that punching shear with a wheel with pneumatic pressure is less critical because curvatures tend to be distributed over the surface of the applied load rather than concentrated near the edges of the column. In order to investigate the experimental results on slab strips without shear reinforcement, a mechanical model is proposed to predict the shear strength and rotation capacity of plastic hinges. The shear strength is formulated as a function of the opening of the shear crack and of the strength of the concrete compression zone. The results of the mechanical model are in good agreement with the measured values, both for the shear strength and for the shear carried across the shear crack. Based on the mechanical model, a simplified equation is proposed. The model can also be used to predict the shear capacity of yield-lines. A non linear finite element model was implemented during this work and used to correctly predict the measured rotations and load-displacements curves of the tested cantilevers and other full scale tests performed by other researchers. The measured failure loads are accurately estimated by using the results of the non-linear model and the one-way shear and punching shear criteria proposed by Prof. A. Muttoni (Muttoni 2003).

Zürich Stadtspital Triemli Personalhäuser – Resource assessment of structural elements

The Triemli Personalhäuser are three equal 15-story buildings located on the Zürich Triemli Stadtspital campus and erected between 1964 and 1969. Cast-in-place reinforced concrete (RC) slabs and walls form the building cores and their surrounding corridors. The rooms are arranged around these cores. The load-bearing intermediate walls, made of prefabricated masonry, support thin precast slabs used as permanent forms. A RC layer is cast over these precast slabs and connects the room slabs with the cast-in-place slabs of the corridors and cores. The self-supporting facade consists of precast RC panels. The City of Zürich plans the deconstruction of these three buildings, thus making available a large amount of RC elements composing the structure and the facades of these buildings. Little-known and rarely implemented, the reuse of concrete elements from obsolete buildings in new projects is a sustainable approach that promotes a circular economy. When reusing, the components of obsolete buildings are carefully dismantled without being crushed. They are then cleaned, possibly repaired or trimmed, and reused without many transformations in a new project, maintaining their shapes, technologies, and mechanical properties. In addition to maintaining the embodied energy and history of the reused components, reuse allows the construction industry to reduce demolition waste, greenhouse gas emissions, and material consumption. This report is a preliminary resource assessment and aims at inventorying and assessing all structural elements of the Triemli Personalhäuser, focusing on their potential value for reuse. Both precast and cast-in-place RC elements are included. They are part of the load-bearing structure or are self-supporting such as the precast facade elements. The proposed methodology allows identifying all properties needed to evaluate the potential for reuse of an element: geometry, material properties, current condition, aesthetics, accessibility, resistance, future durability and environmental impacts. After reviewing available reports and drawings on the buildings, onsite visits are carried out to complete the information and visually inspect the structural elements. During the inspection, the elements are assessed with regards to their suitability for reuse and their condition is classified into a five-grade scale. The investigations are completed with destructive and non-destructive testing of the material properties. Together, Buildings A, B and C are made up of approximately 7 000 m3 of materials constituting their load-bearing system, with approximately 2 500 m3 of precast concrete, 3 400 m3 of cast-in-place concrete and 1 100 m3 of masonry. Of this total, approximately 4% of the volume is dropped from the analysis due to the bad condition of the elements, namely the balcony slabs, the roof slab, and the external stairs. The other elements are in a good or acceptable condition and ae inventoried and analysed in detail. The inventoried elements are divided into 5 categories: (1) facade elements; (2) slab elements; (3) wall elements; (4) column elements; and (5) staircases. Each of these categories are subdivided into a certain number of element types for which a complete factsheet is prepared, including pictures, drawings and useful information on their condition. The volume and weight of each element types are given, as well as their share of the total material volume. The embodied global warming potential (in kgCO2eq) for fabrication and demolition of the elements is also calculated. The results of the investigation on material properties confirm sufficient compressive strength for all elements. The carbonation depths measured on the cores are lower than the cover thickness of the reinforcement. Thus, the concrete is not carbonated in the reinforcement areas and the risk of corrosion is kept low, insuring a good durability of the elements. This document should serve as a base for designing and planning future reuse applications for the concrete elements extracted when deconstructing the Triemli Personalhäuser. The information presented here will help the planners to prioritize the reuse strategy on the elements in the best conditions, with the largest volume share and thus with the largest embodied global warming potential.
