Pesticides drive risk of micropollutants in wastewater-impacted streams during low flow conditions

Micropollutants enter surface waters through various pathways, of which wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are a major source. The large diversity of micropollutants and their many modes of toxic action pose a challenge for assessing environmental risks. In this study, we investigated the potential impact of WWTPs on receiving ecosystems by describing concentration patterns of micropollutants, predicting acute risks for aquatic organisms and validating these results with macroinvertebrate biomonitoring data. Grab samples were taken upstream, downstream and at the effluent of 24 Swiss WWTPs during low flow conditions across independent catchments with different land uses. Using liquid chromatography high resolution tandem mass spectrometry, a comprehensive target screening of almost 400 organic substances, focusing mainly on pesticides and pharmaceuticals, was conducted at two time points, and complemented with the analysis of a priority mixture of 57 substances over eight time points. Acute toxic pressure was predicted using the risk assessment approach of the multi-substance potentially affected fraction, first applying concentration addition for substances with the same toxic mode of action and subsequently response addition for the calculation of the risk of the total mixture. This toxic pressure was compared to macroinvertebrate sensitivity to pesticides (SPEAR index) upstream and downstream of the WWTPs. The concentrations were, as expected, especially for pharmaceuticals and other household chemicals higher downstream than upstream, with the detection frequency of plant protection products upstream correlating with the fraction of arable land in the catchments. While the concentration sums downstream were clearly dominated by pharmaceuticals or other household chemicals, the acute toxic pressure was mainly driven by pesticides, often caused by the episodic occurrence of these compounds even during low flow conditions. In general, five single substances explained much of the total risk, with diclofenac, diazinon and clothianidin as the main drivers. Despite the low predicted acute risk of 0%-2.1% for affected species, a significant positive correlation with macroinvertebrate sensitivity to pesticides was observed. However, more effect data for pharmaceuticals and a better quantification of episodic pesticide pollution events are needed for a more comprehensive risk assessment. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Dynamics and environmental risk assessment of the herbicide glyphosate and its metabolite AMPA in a small vineyard river of the Lake Geneva catchment

The use of pesticides may lead to environmental problems, such as surface water pollution, with a risk for aquatic organisms. In the present study, a typical vineyard river of western Switzerland was first monitored to measure discharged loads, identify sources, and assess the dynamic of the herbicide glyphosate and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). Second, based on river concentrations, an associated environmental risk was calculated using laboratory tests and ecotoxicity data from the literature. Measured concentrations confirmed the mobility of these molecules with elevated peaks during flood events, up to 4970 ng/L. From April 2011 to September 2011, a total load of 7.1 kg was calculated, with 85% coming from vineyards and minor urban sources and 15% from arable crops. Compared with the existing literature, this load represents an important fraction (6-12%) of the estimated amount applied because of the steep vineyard slopes (similar to 10%). The associated risk of these compounds toward aquatic species was found to be negligible in the present study, as well as for other rivers in Switzerland. A growth stimulation was nevertheless observed for the algae Scenedesmus vacuolatus with low concentrations of glyphosate, which could indicate a risk of perturbation in aquatic ecosystems, such as eutrophication. The combination of field and ecotoxicity data allowed the performance of a realistic risk assessment for glyphosate and AMPA, which should be applied to other pesticide molecules. (C) 2013 SETAC

Endocrine disruption in soil invertebrates

In the past years, it has been observed that some compounds present in our environment can disturb the reproduction and development of animals like fishes, birds, or reptiles by interfering with their endocrine system. Indeed, these endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC) can mimic or antagonize the effects of hormones, alter the pattern of synthesis and metabolism of hormones or modify hormone receptor levels. These substances represent a risk for wildlife, and possibly for humans. Up to now, endocrine disruption was mainly evaluated for vertebrates and aquatic organisms and for oestrogeniclike substances. However, soil invertebrates, which play an important role in soil functioning, have rarely been considered. Moreover, as their endocrine system differs substantially from those of vertebrates (estrogens do not seem to regulate endocrine functions in invertebrates), other substances than can mimic invertebrate hormones should be taken into account. In this sense, insect growth regulators (IGR), which are third generation insecticides specially developed to interfere with insect endocrine system, are interesting compounds. These substances are supposed to have a high specificity for insect pest and a low toxicity for non-target organisms. In the first part of this study, the sublethal effects of six IGR (methoprene, fenoxycarb, precocene II, tebufenozide, hexaflumuron and teflubenzuron) were evaluated on the non-target soil arthropod Folsomia candida. The collembola F. candida represents an integral and beneficial part of the soil ecosystem. It is an euedaphic (subsurface) species which plays an important role in soil respiration and decomposition processes and is therefore vulnerable to the effects of soil contamination. This ecologically relevant organism is one of the most appropriate invertebrate test species for the assessment of environmental quality. It is recommended as test organism by the international standard ISO 11267. The 28-days reproduction tests conducted according to this protocol show that F. candida is affected by the chosen IGR. The most toxic compounds were the two chitin synthesis inhibitors, teflubenzuron and hexaflumuron, with an EC50 of 0.05 mg/kg (dw) for teflubenzuron and an EC50 of 0.6 mg/kg for hexaflumuron.
