Terre Haute, IndianaTerre Haute (ˈtɛrə_ˈhoʊt ) is a city in and the county seat of Vigo County, Indiana, United States, about 5 miles east of the state's western border with Illinois. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 58,389 and its metropolitan area had a population of 168,716. Located along the Wabash River, Terre Haute is one of the largest cities in the Wabash Valley and is known as the Queen City of the Wabash. The city is home to multiple higher-education institutions, including Indiana State University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana.
Lalan (artist)Lalan, born Xie Jing-lan (Chinese: 謝景蘭; 1921–1995), was a Chinese-French multidisciplinary artist. Lalan was among the early practitioners of integrated arts, incorporating painting, music, dance, and poetry into her performances. Lalan was born in Guizhou, China. She received professional vocal training at the Shanghai Music Academy, and then studied composition and modern dance after relocating to Paris in 1948 with her then husband, painter Zao Wou-ki. Lalan did not start painting until the age of 37.
Cécile MichelCécile Michel (born 20 April 1962, Neuilly-sur-Seine) is a French epigrapher and archaeologist. After Michel defended her thesis in 1988 (Les Marchands Inaya dans les tablettes cappadociennes) at the Pantheon-Sorbonne University, she joined the CNRS in 1990. She taught at the Paris 8 University and the Institut catholique de Paris. She won the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres prize in 1999 and in 2002, the Prix Delalande-Guéreau. She supported a habilitation to direct research in 2004 at Paris VIII.
Éric de BisschopÉric de Bisschop (October 21, 1891 – August 30, 1958) was a French seafarer, famous for his travel from Honolulu to France aboard the Polynesian sailboat Kaimiloa. He spent most of his adult life in the Pacific Ocean, notably in Honolulu (1935–1937 and 1941–1947) and in French Polynesia (1947–1956); he was not simply a sea adventurer but had a deep interest in the Pacific and its inhabitants, whose history he tried to study. He was born in Aire-sur-la-Lys (Pas-de-Calais).
Hervé Le TellierHervé Le Tellier (born 21 April 1957) is a French writer and linguist, and a member of the international literary group Oulipo (Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle, which translates roughly as "workshop of potential literature"). He is its fourth president. Other notable members have included Raymond Queneau, Georges Perec, Italo Calvino, Jacques Roubaud, Jean Lescure and Harry Mathews. He won the 2020 Prix Goncourt for The Anomaly. Born in Paris, Le Tellier started his career as a scientific journalist, and joined Oulipo in 1992.
Canon de 75 antiaérien mle 1913–1917The Canon de 75 antiaérien mle 1913–1917 were a family of French 75 mm anti-aircraft guns designed and manufactured by Schneider et Cie at Le Creusot. The guns were used by the French Army during the First World War and Second World War. The origins of the modèle 1913–1917 go back to the Canon de 75 modèle 1897 field gun which was first employed on improvised anti-aircraft mounts, which were typically earthen embankments or scaffolds to get the muzzle pointed skyward. Later in the war, specialized anti-aircraft mounts were developed.
François CointerauxFrançois Cointeraux (1740–1830) was a French architect. He "discovered" pisé de terre (rammed earth) architecture in the Lyon region and promulgated its use in Paris. Born in Lyon, he is the nephew of a master mason, with whom he learns drawing, architecture and perspective. He starts working in his city of birth and in Grenoble as a construction entrepreneur and a land surveyor for Lyon until 1786, when he enters an examination of the Academy of Amiens, he is received in 1787, and moves to Paris the following year.
Charles-Irénée Castel de Saint-PierreCharles-Irénée Castel, abbé de Saint-Pierre (18 February 1658 – 29 April 1743) was a French author whose ideas were novel for his times. His proposal of an international organisation to maintain peace was among the first in history, with possible exceptions such as George of Poděbrady's Tractatus (1462–1464) and Émeric Crucé. He influenced Rousseau and Kant. Saint-Pierre was born at the château of Saint-Pierre-Église near Cherbourg, where his father, the Marquis de Saint-Pierre, was grand bailli of Cotentin.
Mondial des CulturesThe Mondial Des Cultures (formerly called the Festival Mondial de Folklore (World Folklore Festival) was a folk dance festival which was held every summer in early July at the Woodyatt Park, in Drummondville, a city located in the Centre-du-Québec region. The event was founded in 1982, after members of the folk ensemble Mackinaw had attended a similar festival in Dijon, France. The last festival was held in summer 2017 festival, after which it ceased to exist.
Chasseurs AlpinsThe chasseurs alpins (Alpine Hunters) are the elite mountain infantry force of the French Army. They are trained to operate in mountainous terrain and in urban warfare. France created its own mountain corps in the late 19th century in order to oppose any Italian invasion through the Alps. In 1859–70 Italy became unified, forming a powerful state. The French army saw this geopolitical change as a potential threat to their Alpine border, especially as the Italian army was already creating troops specialized in mountain warfare (the Alpini).
