Pore-scale analysis of the minimum liquid film thickness around elongated bubbles in confined gas-liquid flows

The fluid mechanics of elongated bubbles in confined gas-liquid flows in micro-geometries is important in pore-scale flow processes for enhanced oil recovery and mobilization of colloids in unsaturated soil. The efficiency of such processes is traditionally related to the thickness of the liquid film trapped between the elongated bubble and the pore's wall, which is assumed constant. However, the surface of long bubbles presents undulations in the vicinity of the rear meniscus, which may significantly decrease the local thickness of the liquid film, thus impacting the process of interest. This study presents a systematic analysis of these undulations and the minimum film thickness induced in the range Ca = 0.001-0.5 and Re = 0.1-2000. Pore-scale Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are performed with a self-improved version of the opensource solver ESI OpenFOAM which is based on a Volume of Fluid method to track the gas-liquid interface. A lubrication model based on the extension of the classical axisymmetric Bretherton theory is utilized to better understand the CFD results. The profiles of the rear meniscus of the bubble obtained with the lubrication model agree fairly well with those extracted from the CFD simulations. This study shows that the Weber number of the flow, We = Ca Re, is the parameter that best describes the dynamics of the interfacial waves. When We < 0.1, a single wave crest is observed and the minimum film thickness tends to an asymptotic value, which depends on the capillary number, as We -> 0. Undulations dampen as the capillary number increases and disappear completely when Ca = 0. 5. When We > 0.1, a larger number of wave crests becomes evident on the surface of the rear meniscus of the bubble. The liquid film thickness at the crests of the undulations thins considerably as the Reynolds number is increased, down to less than 60% of the value measured in the flat film region. This may significantly influence important environmental processes, such as the detachment and mobilization of micron-sized pollutants and pathogenic micro-organisms adhering at the pore's wall in unsaturated soil. Dynamics of isolated confined air bubbles in liquid flows through circular microchannels: an experimental and numerical study

Experimental and numerical studies are performed to characterise the dynamics of isolated confined air bubbles in laminar fully developed liquid flows within channels of diameters d = 0.5 mm and d = 1 mm. Water and glycerol are used as the continuous liquid phase, and therefore, a large range of flow capillary numbers 10(-4) < Ca < 10(-1) and Reynolds numbers 10(-3) < Re < 10(3) are covered. An extensive investigation is performed on the effect of bubble size and flow capillary number on different flow parameters, such as the shape and velocity of bubbles, thickness of the liquid film formed between the bubbles and the channel wall, and the development lengths in front and at the back of the bubbles. The micro-particle shadow velocimetry technique (mu PSV) is employed in the experimental measurements allowing simultaneous quantification of important flow parameters using a single sequence of high-speed greyscale images recorded at each test condition. Bubble volume and flow rate of the continuous liquid phase are precisely determined in the post-processing stage using the mu PSV images. These parameters are then used as initial and boundary conditions to set up CFD simulations reproducing the corresponding two-phase flow. Simulations based on the volume of fluid technique with the aim of capturing the interface dynamics are performed with both ANSYS Fluent v. 14.5, here augmented by implementing self-defined functions to improve the accuracy of the surface tension force estimation, and ESI OpenFOAM v. 2.1.1. The present approach not only results in valuable findings on the underlying physics involved in the problem of interest but also allows us to directly compare and validate results that are currently obtained by the experimental and computational methods. It is believed that similar methodology can be employed to rigorously investigate more complex two-phase flow regimes in micro-geometries.

Large Eddy Simulation of Particle Dynamics Inside a Differentially Heated Cavity

In nuclear safety, most severe accident scenarios lead to the presence of fission products in aerosol form in the closed containment atmosphere. It is important to understand the particle depletion process to estimate the risk of a release of radioactivity to the environment should a containment break occur. As a model for the containment, we use the three-dimensional differentially heated cavity (DHC) problem. DHC is a cubical box with a hot wall and a cold wall on vertical opposite sides. On the other walls of the cube we have adiabatic boundary conditions. For the velocity field the no-slip boundary condition is valid. The flow of the air in the cavity is described by the Boussinesq equations. Complex flow patterns develop and the flow characteristics depend on the non-dimensional Rayleigh and Prandtl numbers. The predominant flow type in the DHC is a turbulent natural convection flow. This work aims at reaching Rayleigh numbers and turbulent levels as high as possible given the available computational resources. The method used to simulate the turbulent flow is the large eddy simulation (LES) where the dynamics of the large eddies is resolved by the computational grid and the small eddies are modelled by the introduction of subgrid scale quantities using a filter function. Numerically, the LES equations are discretized by the spectral element method. Particle trajectories are computed using the Lagrangian particle tracking method, including the relevant forces (drag, gravity, thermophoresis). Four different particle sets with each set containing one million particles and diameters of 10 μm, 15 μm, 25 μm and 35 μm are simulated. The complexity and the size of the large three-dimensional problem requires the use of massively parallel supercomputers. Spectral element methods are naturally suitable for parallelisation by distributing the elements among the processors. For the Lagrangian particle tracking we use a method where equal numbers of particles are assigned to every processor. The flow field is broadcast and every particle processor tracks the assigned particles, a procedure which leads to a perfect load balancing. Simulation results for the flow field and particle sizes from 15 μm to 35 μm at a Rayleigh number of 109 are compared to previous results from a direct numerical simulation. First order statistics of the LES flow fields are in very good agreement with the direct numerical simulation while the agreement of second order moments is fair. Also the turbulent structures associated to the maximum of turbulent kinetic energy production are correctly reproduced. Particle statistics in the LES and the direct numerical simulation were similar and the settling rates practically identical. Contrary to previous particle simulations in LES, it was found that no model was necessary for the influence of the unresolved flow scales on the particle motions. This can be explained, because the important settling mechanism is through gravity and particle deposition at the walls by turbophoresis is negligible.

A Flexible Coupled Level Set and Volume of Fluid (flexCLV) method to simulate microscale two-phase flow in non-uniform and unstructured meshes

An innovative Flexible Coupled Level Set (LS) and Volume of Fluid (VOF) algorithm (flexCLV) to simulate two-phase flows at the microscale on unstructured and non-uniform meshes is proposed. The method combines the advantages of the VOF method in terms of mass conservation and the LS method in terms of accuracy of the surface tension implementation and can handle both 2D and 3D domains discretized by either structured hexaedra or unstructured tetrahedral grids with high aspect ratio elements, thus guaranteeing flexibility and robustness. The method is implemented within the VOF-based OpenFOAM's solver interFoam, which is retained as the base algorithm for the interface advection, while the surface tension force is calculated by using the level set function reconstructed from the VOF's fraction. The method is first validated in static flow conditions by simulating a circular bubble at equilibrium and then in dynamic flow conditions by studying a freely bubble rising in both 2D and 3D domains discretized by both structured and unstructured meshes. The proposed flexCLV algorithm is then used to simulate the dynamics of confined bubbles in circular microchannels in the low capillary number regime. 2D and 3D mesh grids with high aspect ratio elements are utilized to discretized the liquid film at the tube's walls. The numerical results are compared with the available literature and simulations performed with the original interFoam solver in terms of bubble shape and velocity, thickness of the liquid film and amplitude of the bubble tail oscillations. Results compare very well with the experimental measurements and demonstrate the superior accuracy of the coupled flexCLV method with respect to the original VOF method when surface tension and accurate interface representation play a fundamental role. Importantly, the present study also provides a precious insight on the time-dependent patterns appearing on the bubble surface in the visco-inertial regime, which could be here investigated in detail.
