A comparative study on wavelets and residuals in deep super resolution

Despite the advances in single-image super resolution using deep convolutional networks, the main problem remains unsolved: recovering fine texture details. Recent works in super resolution aim at modifying the training of neural networks to enable the recovery of these details. Among the different method proposed, wavelet decomposition are used as inputs to super resolution networks to provide structural information about the image. Residual connections may also link different network layers to help propagate high frequencies. We review and compare the usage of wavelets and residuals in training super resolution neural networks. We show that residual connections are key in improving the performance of deep super resolution networks. We also show that there is no statistically significant performance difference between spatial and wavelet inputs. Finally, we propose a new super resolution architecture that saves memory costs while still using residual connections, and performing comparably to the current state of the art.

Recent advances have shown the great power of deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) to learn the relationship between low and high-resolution image patches. However, these methods only take a single-scale image as input and require large amount of data to train without the risk of overfitting. In this paper, we tackle the problem of multi-modal spectral image super-resolution while constraining ourselves to a small dataset. We propose the use of different modalities to improve the performance of neural networks on the spectral super-resolution problem. First, we use multiple downscaled versions of the same image to infer a better high-resolution image for training, we refer to these inputs as a multi-scale modality. Furthermore, color images are usually taken at a higher resolution than spectral images, so we make use of color images as another modality to improve the super-resolution network. By combining both modalities, we build a pipeline that learns to super-resolve using multi-scale spectral inputs guided by a color image. Advances In Morphological Neural Networks: Training, Pruning And Enforcing Shape Constraints

In this paper, we study an emerging class of neural networks, the Morphological Neural networks, from some modern perspectives. Our approach utilizes ideas from tropical geometry and mathematical morphology. First, we state the training of a binary morphological classifier as a Difference-of-Convex optimization problem and extend this method to multiclass tasks. We then focus on general morphological networks trained with gradient descent variants and show, quantitatively via pruning schemes as well as qualitatively, the sparsity of the resulted representations compared to FeedForward networks with ReLU activations as well as the effect the training optimizer has on such compression techniques. Finally, we show how morphological networks can be employed to guarantee monotonicity and present a softened version of a known architecture, based on Maslov Dequantization, which alleviates issues of gradient propagation associated with its "hard" counterparts and moderately improves performance.
