MATHICSE Technical Report : A patient-specific aortic valve model based on moving resistive immersed implicit surfaces

In this paper, we propose a full computational pipeline to simulate the hemodynamics in the aorta including the valve. Closed and open valve surfaces, as well as the lumen aorta, are reconstructed directly from medical images using new ad hoc algorithms, allowing a patient-specific simulation. The fluid dynamics problem that accounts from the movement of the valve is solved by a new 3D-0D fluid-structure interaction model in which the valve surface is implicitly represented through level set functions, yielding, in the Navier-Stokes equations, a resistive penalization term enforcing the blood to adhere to the valve leaflets. The dynamics of the valve between its closed and open position is modeled using a reduced geometric 0D model. At the discrete level, a Finite Element formulation is used and the SUPG stabilization is extended to include the resistive term in the Navier-Stokes equations. Then, after time discretization, the 3D fluid and 0D valve models are coupled through a staggered approach. This computational pipeline, applied to a patient specific geometry and data, can reliably reproduce the movement of the valve, the sharp pressure jump occurring across the leaflets, and the blood flow pattern inside the aorta.

Spectral Methods

Spectral methods, particularly in their multidomain version, have become firmly established as a mainstream tool for scientific and engineering computation. While retaining the tight integration between the theoretical and practical aspects of spectral methods that was the hallmark of their 1988 book, Canuto et al. now incorporate the many improvements in the algorithms and the theory of spectral methods that have been made since then. This second new treatment, Evolution to Complex Geometries and Applications to Fluid Dynamics, provides an extensive overview of the essential algorithmic and theoretical aspects of spectral methods for complex geometries, in addition to detailed discussions of spectral algorithms for fluid dynamics in simple and complex geometries. Modern strategies for constructing spectral approximations in complex domains, such as spectral elements, mortar elements, and discontinuous Galerkin methods, as well as patching collocation, are introduced, analyzed, and demonstrated by means of numerous numerical examples. Representative simulations from continuum mechanics are also shown. Efficient domain decomposition preconditioners (of both Schwarz and Schur type) that are amenable to parallel implementation are surveyed. The discussion of spectral algorithms for fluid dynamics in single domains focuses on proven algorithms for the boundary-layer equations, linear and nonlinear stability analyses, incompressible Navier-Stokes problems, and both inviscid and viscous compressible flows. An overview of the modern approach to computing incompressible flows in general geometries using high-order, spectral discretizations is also provided. The recent companion book Fundamentals in Single Domains discusses the fundamentals of the approximation of solutions to ordinary and partial differential equations on single domains by expansions in smooth, global basis functions. The essential concepts and formulas from this book are included in the current text for the reader’s convenience.

Geometric, variational discretization of continuum theories

This study derives geometric, variational discretization of continuum theories arising in fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), and the dynamics of complex fluids. A central role in these discretizations is played by the geometric formulation of fluid dynamics, which views solutions to the governing equations for perfect fluid flow as geodesics on the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of the fluid domain. Inspired by this framework, we construct a finite-dimensional approximation to the diffeomorphism group and its Lie algebra, thereby permitting a variational temporal discretization of geodesics on the spatially discretized diffeomorphism group. The extension to MHD and complex fluid flow is then made through an appeal to the theory of Euler-Poincare systems with advection, which provides a generalization of the variational formulation of ideal fluid flow to fluids with one or more advected parameters. Upon deriving a family of structured integrators for these systems, we test their performance via a numerical implementation of the update schemes on a cartesian grid. Among the hallmarks of these new numerical methods are exact preservation of momenta arising from symmetries, automatic satisfaction of solenoidal constraints on vector fields, good long-term energy behavior, robustness with respect to the spatial and temporal resolution of the discretization, and applicability to irregular meshes.
