Photometric characterization of multiple populations in star clusters: the impact of the first dredge-up

Abstract

The existence of star-to-star light-element abundance variations (multiple populations, MPs) in massive Galactic and extragalactic star clusters older than about 2 Gyr is by now well established. Photometry of red giant, branch (RGB) stars has been and still is instrumental in enabling the detection and characterization of cluster MPs, through the appropriate choices of filters, colours, and colour combinations that are mainly sensitive to N and to a lesser degree C stellar surface abundances. An important issue not yet properly addressed is that the translation of the observed widths of the cluster RGBs to abundance spreads must account for the effect of the first dredge-up on the surface chemical patterns, hence on the spectral energy distributions of stars belonging to the various MPs, We have filled this gap by studying theoretically the impact of the dredge-up on the predicted widths of RGBs in clusters hosting MPs. We find that for a given initial range of N abundances, the first dredge-up reduces the predicted RGB widths in N-sensitive filters compared to the case when its effect on the stellar spectral energy distributions is not accounted for. This reduction is a strong function of age and has also a dependence on metallicity. The net effect is an underestimate of the initial N-abundance ranges from RGB photometry if the first dredge-up is not accounted for in the modelling, and also the potential determination of spurious trends of N-abundance spreads with age.

As part of a long-term project to determine abundances and astrophysical properties of evolved red stars in open clusters, we present high-precision DDO photoelectric observations for a sample of 33 red giant candidates projected in the fields of nine Galactic open clusters. These data are supplemented with UBV photoelectric photometry of 24 of these stars as well as with CORAVEL radial-velocity observations for 13 red giant candidates in four of the clusters. We also present Washington photoelectric photometry of a small sample of red giant candidates of the open cluster Ruprecht 97. The likelihood of cluster membership for each star photometrically observed and for 23 additional red giant candidates with UBV and DDO data available in the literature, is evaluated by using two independent photometric criteria. Nearly 82% of the analysed stars are found to have a high probability of being cluster giants. Photometric membership probabilities show very good agreement with those obtained from CORAVEL radial velocities. While E(B - V) colour excesses were determined from combined B - V and DDO colours, calibrations of the DDO system were used to derive MK spectral types, effective temperatures and metallicities.The derived DDO metallicities range between values typical of moderately metal-poor clusters ([Fe/H] = -0.19) to moderately metal-rich ([Fe/H] = 0.25) ones. Context. Due to their volatile nature, when sulphur and zinc are observed in external galaxies, their determined abundances represent the gas-phase abundances in the interstellar medium. This implies that they can be used as tracers of the chemical enrichment of matter in the Universe at high redshift. Comparable observations in stars are more difficult and, until recently, plagued by small number statistics. Aims. We wish to exploit the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) data to study the behaviour of sulphur and zinc abundances of a large number of Galactic stars, in a homogeneous way. Methods. By using the UVES spectra of the GES sample, we are able to assemble a sample of 1301 Galactic stars, including stars in open and globular clusters in which both sulphur and zinc were measured. Results. We confirm the results from the literature that sulphur behaves as an alpha-element. We find a large scatter in [Zn/Fe] ratios among giant stars around solar metallicity. The lower ratios are observed in giant stars at Galactocentric distances less than 7.5 kpc. No such effect is observed among dwarf stars, since they do not extend to that radius. Conclusions. Given the sample selection, giants and dwarfs are observed at different Galactic locations, and it is plausible, and compatible with simple calculations, that Zn-poor giants trace a younger population more polluted by SN Ia yields. It is necessary to extend observations in order to observe both giants and dwarfs at the same Galactic location. Further theoretical work on the evolution of zinc is also necessary.

Constant light element abundances suggest that the extended P1 in NGC 2808 is not a consequence of CNO-cycle nucleosynthesis

Recent photometric results have identified a new population among globular cluster stars. This population, referred to as the 'extended P1', has been suggested to be the manifestation of a new abundance pattern where the initial mass fraction of He changes among cluster stars that share the same CNO values. The current paradigm for the formation of the multiple stellar populations in globular clusters assumes that variations in He are the product of chemical 'enrichment' by the ashes of the CNO-cycle (which changes He and other elements like C, N and O simultaneously). We obtained MIKE@Magellan spectra of six giant stars in NGC 2808, a cluster with one of the strongest examples of the extended P1 population. We provide the first complete characterization of the light elements abundances for the stars along a significant range of the extended P1 photometric group. The stars from our sample appear to be homogeneous in C, N, O, Na, Mg and Al. The lack of a significant change in these products of the CNO-cycle suggests that unlike the rest of the populations identified to date, the photometric changes responsible for the extended P1 feature are a consequence of an alternative mechanism. Our measurements are consistent with the interpretations where the changes of the He mass fraction among these stars could be a consequence of p-p chain nucleosynthesis (which could increase the He in stars without affecting heavier elements). Having said that, direct measurements of He are necessary to conclude if variations of this element are present among extended P1 stars.
