Global sensitivity analysis of environmental, water quality, photoreactivity, and engineering design parameters in sunlight inactivation of viruses

Sunlight-mediated inactivation of microorganisms is a low-cost approach to disinfect drinking water and wastewater. The reactions involved are affected by a wide range of factors, and a lack of knowledge about their relative importance make it challenging to optimize treatment systems. To characterize the relative importance of environmental conditions, photoreactivity, water quality, and engineering design in the sunlight inactivation of viruses, we modeled the inactivation of three – human adenovirus and two bacteriophages – MS2 and phiX174 – in surface waters and waste stabilization ponds by integrating solar irradiance and aquatic photochemistry models under uncertainty. Through global sensitivity analyses, we quantitatively apportioned the variability of predicted sunlight inactivation rate constants to different factors. Most variance was associated with the variability in and interactions among time, location, non-purgeable organic carbon (NPOC) concentration, and pond depth. Photolysis quantum yield of the virus outweighed seasonal solar motion in the impact on inactivation rates. Further, comparison of simulated sunlight inactivation efficacy in maturation ponds under different design decisions showed reducing pond depth can increase the log inactivation at the cost of larger land area, but increasing hydraulic retention time by adding ponds-in-series yielded greater improvements in inactivation.

The diffuse infiltration of road runoff: an environmental improvement

The Laboratory of Engineering and Environmental Geology (GEOLEP) has been mandated by Swiss authorities (Swiss Federal Road Office FedRO) to test a new road runoff management concept. This concept promotes the diffuse infiltration of road runoff into infiltration slopes designed for this purpose. Soils retain particles and contaminants; this lowers the road impact on the environment and simultaneously improves aquifer recharge. This concept has to be adapted to aquifer vulnerability and traffic conditions. Thus, a real-scale experimental station was designed and built in Switzerland to assess the feasibility of this new concept. This station allowed the testing of two lysimeters composed of 80cm of A and B- horizons. Water and chemical fluxes were measured at the lysimeter bases. Road runoff was sampled in a distinct collector. Infiltration of road runoff into the local aquifer was monitored thanks to six piezometers. Water quality and quantity were therefore measured at each step of the infiltration process. Results provided by 112 natural events showed that soil horizons accommodated road runoff flows. The least favourable conditions for contaminant retention are encountered during thunderstorms, when high concentrations of substances deposited on the road are remobilised within a short time and rapidly percolates through soil horizons. Thus, three artificial events were designed to mimic heavy thunderstorms. Concentrations measured in road runoff notably decreased after soil filtration. Substances with high distribution coefficients Kd (low mobility) had concentrations reduced to lower values (1/1000 to 1/10,000), while those with high mobility retained similar concentrations even after soil filtration. However, these mobile substances exhibited low concentrations in the underlying aquifer due to dilution. This innovative road runoff management concept can thus be readily implemented outside groundwater protection zones where aquifers are slightly vulnerable; it undoubtedly lowers the environmental impact of roads, does not endanger road integrity, and locally increases aquifer recharge.

Design approach for the improvement of the economic and environmental performances of potable water supply

Triggered by the Kyoto Protocol and by the aggravation of freshwater scarcity, environmental impacts should soon become key decision criteria for the planning of potable water supply projects, especially when advanced systems such as seawater desalination are at stake. In order to foster the transition of the water industry towards sustainable practices, the present work proposes an integrated design approach dedicated to potable water supply that targets both economic and environmental objectives. At first, the current industrial practices (Chapter I) and the technical characteristics of potable water supply systems (Chapter II) are analyzed via the modeling of the process units used for potable water supply: pumping systems, conventional water treatment processes (e.g. clarification, filtration, disinfection) and advanced water treatment processes (e.g. membrane processes, thermal processes). Using the ISO 14040 standardized Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method, Chapter III presents the development of a performance indicator that assesses the environmental impacts generated through all stages of the life cycle of potable water supply (i.e. from "cradle to grave"): from the construction of the potable water treatment plant, to its operation and decommissioning. This LCA-based indicator provides a holistic overview of all potential environmental impacts (e.g. green house gases (GHG) emissions, impacts on ecosystems and on human health). It allows to stress out the impact sources and the penalizing steps within potable water supply (Chapter IV): The production of electricity and chemicals required by the potable water treatment plant is highlighted to generate respectively 75% and 15% of the total impacts generated during the life cycle of potable water supply. Different potable water supply scenarios (e.g. potable water supply from ground water, from surface water, seawater desalination, water import from distant water resources) are benchmarked, in order to identify the best solutions as a function of the local context (e.g. type of electricity supply, topographic conditions, feed water quality). Based on the results of the environmental assessment, Chapter V proposes measures for the improvement of the industrial practices of the water sector, targeting energy and chemicals management, electricity sourcing and effluent disposal. Within the same perspective, Chapter VI details an optimization method for the design of the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane process, i.e. the key treatment process for desalination and wastewater reclamation. This method systematically synthesizes RO process configurations and evaluates their performances on economical (total annualized costs), technical (energy requirement, water conversion rate) and environmental criteria (GHG emissions). Evolutionary algorithms are then used to optimize the design of these configurations (process layout and operating conditions) and to identify those featuring the best trade-offs between economical costs and environmental impacts. As case study, the optimization method is applied on a brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) desalination project. The characteristics of the optimal BWRO process configurations are calculated as a function of the project constraints (e.g. economical and technical settings, minimum potable water quality), in order to illustrate how this method may support process engineers for the design of desalination plants.

Environmental and economic analysis of new construction techniques reusing existing concrete elements: two case studies

As the most widely used construction material worldwide, concrete is the main cause of greenhouse gas emissions, material depletion, and waste generation by the construction industry. Typically, concrete waste is crushed and, at best, reclaimed into recycled aggregate or used as gravel. This process is energy-intensive and results in a reduction in material properties. In contrast, the direct reuse of concrete elements from obsolete structures offers great potential for significantly reducing the environmental impact of new constructions. To be reused, concrete elements are carefully sawn out of soon-to-be-demolished buildings. Elements are then used without other major transformations for another service cycle in a new assembly. This paper analyses two recent projects in Switzerland that showcase innovative applications of concrete reuse: a post-tensioned segmented arch footbridge and a parking pavement. Both projects reuse blocks extracted from cast-in-place concrete buildings undergoing transformation or demolition. In this paper, environmental and economic analyses provide a comprehensive understanding of the alleviations and costs involved. Results are compared to those of alternatives with conventional construction methods. The two projects reusing concrete globally showcase a drastically lower environmental impacts for comparable or higher construction costs, hence calling for future developments of such new circular construction strategies.
