Exploring Perovskite-Metal Nanoassemblies for Photocatalytic Applications

The development of sustainable, renewable and economic chemical processes lies in the centre of todayâs global energy challenge. Like in plants, artificial photosynthesis offers an auspicious solution in harvesting solar energy and storing it in chemical bonds. A number of potential architectures and material systems have been proposed. Among these, the construction of light harvesting antennas funnelling energy towards a catalytic center is a promising idea that mimics the natural photosynthetic system. Semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) and plasmonic metal NCs are ideal candidates to develop such a concept. The former possesses a tunability of optical properties which is superior to other light absorbers. The latter are interesting photocatalysts able to steer reaction selectivities in a unique way related to their plasmon decay. Among semiconductor NCs, the recently emerged lead halide perovskite NCs represent ideal FRET-type donors due to their high quantum yields and short photoluminescence lifetimes. Yet, incorporating them into a multicomponent light harvesting assemblies is challenging due to their inherent instability issues in conditions which are normally used to drive water splitting or CO2 reduction. Hence, this thesis focuses on exploring the viability of a photocatalytic assembly including perovskite and metal NCs, starting from enhancing the environmental stability of perovskite NC films, then moving towards investigating the optical and structural changes resulting from their interfacing with plasmonic metal NCs, and finally demonstrating an exemplary assembly platform to study energy transfer between perovskite and metal NCs that ultimately reveals improved photocatalytic efficiencies compared to the single components. Firstly, the fabrication of CsPbX3 NC aluminium oxide (AlOx) nanocomposites by a low temperature atomic layer deposition (ALD) process is proposed as a novel protection scheme. The nucleation and growth of AlOx on the NC surface was investigated by a miscellanea of techniques, highlighting the importance of the interaction between the ALD precursors and the NC surface to uniformly coat the film. These nanocomposites show enhanced stability under exposure in air, irradiation, heat, and upon immersion in water for 1 hour. A deeper understanding of the perovskiteâmetal chemistry is crucial to elucidate the instability problems at the assembly and device level. In the second part, we study the reactions occurring between CsPbX3 (X = Br, BrI, I) perovskite and plasmonic metals (M = Ag, Cu, Au) NCs. We demonstrate a fast optical and structural degradation of perovskites, particularly of iodine containing analogs, driven by the formation of metal halides. While the encapsulation of perovskite NCs in inorganic matrices has been shown to be effective in enhancing their stability, the feasibility of extracting electronic energy from these composite systems still needs to be studied. In this final part, we explore the capacity of CsPbBr3 NC/AlOx nanocomposite films to drive chemical reactions by coupling them to plasmonic Ag NCs. AlOx is used both as a stabilizing layer and as a spacer to study distance-dependent energy transfer, which reveals a migration of energy from the perovskite toward the AgNCs. We then utilize this pooled energy for a plasmon-mediated dye desorption where we demonstrate enhancement effects of spectral and spatial absorption on the reaction outcome due to the coupling to perovskites NCs.

Molecular Engineering of Electrode Surfaces for Electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysts play an important part on the route towards environmental friendly energy sources. They support modern technologies like fuel cells to move further away from the utilization of fossil fuels and the resulting CO2 emission into our atmosphere. The main principle of such energy conversion technologies is to store chemical energy within chemical bonds and to release it as electric energy to fulfill the energy demand of today's society. However energy conversion chemistry in such technologies requires catalysts in order to be effective by providing an alternative reaction pathway that lowers activation energies and maximizes the energy output. Providing suitable catalyst surfaces requires a fundamental knowledge of the interaction of reactants and reaction intermediates with the catalyst surfaces. This concern is addressed in this thesis by fabricating specifically tailored molecular components on metal surfaces, which act as organic/inorganic hybrid electrodes for various energy conversion reactions in electrocatalysis. Characterizing the electrode surface is crucial in order to identify active sites of the catalyst. The molecular structure is investigated by surface sensitive techniques, such as STM and XPS in combination with a home-build transfer system, which enables electrode fabrication in UHV and electrocatalytic experiments in a liquid environment. A detailed characterization of organic polymer components on electrode surfaces is obtained by combining experimental data with MD simulations. The morphology of polymer networks can be successfully mimicked and depending on the chemical composition and the structure, spatial correlations on short length scales are reported. Hybrid electrodes with organic polymer co-catalysts reveal an increased catalytic activity for the HER by providing suitable docking sites that act as catalytic active sites. Reactants and reaction intermediates are stabilized via hydrogen bonding, which results in a higher catalytic turnover. The specific designed structure of the organic co-catalyst helps to identify a fraction of the reaction mechanism and highlights the importance of molecular components in electrocatalysis. The utilization of organic units on electrocatalysts provides also an excellent opportunity in order to use single metal atoms as catalysts. Engineering large pi-systems has no significant impact on the ORR activity, while the distance between active sites and the underlying electrode are crucial for enhancing the catalytic activity. A significant factor in using molecular components in electrocatalysis is the stability of the organics. Using electrografting allows to design organic/inorganic hybrid electrodes with covalent bonds between the molecular component and the metal substrate. Attaching empty porphyrin molecules to substrates introduces a powerful technique in molecular engineering, since empty porphyrin cycles can be metallized with various metal centers that can act as electrocatalysts for different electrochemical reactions. In summary, this thesis provides multiple engineering aspects, which are useful in designing molecular components on metal electrodes for energy conversion. Such hybrid catalyst surfaces are capable of improving the catalytic activity and allow to study the mechanism of catalytic reactions. Implementing organic components provides new routes for tailoring novel materials, which deliver new insight into the complex field of electrocatalysis.

Oxygen evolution reaction catalyzed by first-row transition metal oxides: stability and mechanism

Water splitting offers the opportunity for storing solar energy and, thus, producing carbon-neutral and renewable solar fuels. The process, known as artificial photosynthesis, is limited by the electrocatalytic conversion of water into molecular oxygen. Electrocatalysts are essential for reducing energy losses and improving the efficiency of the oxygen evolution reaction. This thesis describes the catalytic properties of first-row transition metal oxides for the OER and provides new insights into the mechanism of the reaction. Decades of research have yielded various transition metal oxides as efficient electrocatalysts for the OER, yet their stability is not well established. Here, a combination of techniques was employed to investigate the stability of unary, and mixed metal oxides; electrochemical activity measurements, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The change of mass, composition, and activity metrics over time resolved the stability profiles of CoOx, CoFeOx, CoFeNiOx, NiOx, and NiFeOx. According to ICP-OES, the composition of all the five catalysts changed over time, while the CoOx and CoFeOx exhibited the most significant mass loss during an initial period of electrolysis. During a dynamic exchange of metal ions between the catalyst and the electrolyte, cobalt ions dissolve into the electrolyte, and iron from the electrolytic solution incorporates into the catalytic film. Once this dynamic exchange reaches equilibrium, the catalysts are stable. The mechanism of the OER mediated by amorphous cobalt oxyhydroxide was investigated by in situ spectroscopic and electrokinetic experiments. In situ surface-enhanced Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy supported a Co(IV)-O species at potentials before the onset of OER. The gradual transformation of the catalyst into a CoO2 concurred with the appearance of a superoxidic species. In situ SERS coupled with 18O and H/D isotope experiments provided evidence for the participation of the superoxidic species in the oxygen evolution reaction. The catalyst exhibits a Tafel slope of 60 mV/dec, a first-order dependence of the catalytic activity, and a proton-coupled electron-transfer pre-equilibrium. These findings propose a new OER mechanism, in which the rate-determining step is the release of oxygen from a Co-superoxo intermediate. Iron incorporation into the cobalt lattice enhances the catalytic activity greatly. Even though there are several studies on the OER mechanism in Co-Fe oxides, many vital questions on the role of iron, the true nature of active sites, and the oxidation states of Co and Fe remain. In situ SERS and XAS indicated the presence of Co(IV)-O species and a Fe valency higher than three at potentials prior to the oxygen evolution. An O-O- band, attributed to the superoxidic species, emerged at potentials lower than the onset of OER. In situ SERS coupled with 18O isotope experiments confirmed that both the lattice oxygen and superoxidic species participate in the oxygen evolution. The Tafel slope is about 37 mV/dec indicating that both the pre-equilibrium and rate-determining step involve a single-electron transfer. These findings support that neither the Co(III)/Co(IV) oxidation nor the O-O bond formation are controlling the rate of the reaction.

The aim of this work was to operate the steam reforming of methanol and the total oxidation of methanol in a microstructured two-passage reactor. The steam reforming enables the production of hydrogen at relatively low temperatures (250 °C) with only a small amount of carbon monoxide (~ 1%). After a cleaning step (CO preferential oxidation, for example), this hydrogen would be a good feed for a fuel cell to produce electricity for mobile applications. Steam reforming is an endothermic reaction. The energy needed to run this reaction is produced by the total oxidation, a strongly exothermic reaction. To allow an efficient heat transfer between these two reactions, a microstructured reactor was used. These structures, with dimensions in the micron range, are widely known to have far better heat transfer capacity than traditional heat exchangers. Furthermore, these structures have some unique features with respect to classical reactors. A narrow residence time distribution, close to that of a plug flow reactor, can be obtained, keeping selectivity high for complex reactions. Microstructured reactors also have small residence time, allowing very quick variations in the feed and experimental conditions. In chapter 4, the concepts relating to the channel coatings will be presented. A Cu/Zn/Al catalyst provided by Süd-Chemie was transformed into a suspension of nanoparticles in isopropanol by using an attrition grinding apparatus. A thin layer (~5 µm) of catalyst was formed on the microchannel walls. Several tests were performed to characterize the adhesion of this layer. The influence of the layer on the residence time distribution was also investigated; it was possible to maintain Bodenstein numbers as high as 50. Chapter 5 is focused on the steam reforming of methanol, the reaction that generates hydrogen. A kinetic analysis in differential and integral modes established that the rate of the reaction is inhibited by hydrogen, the main product of the reaction; the partial order is - 0.2. The influence of water on the rate of reaction is negligible (partial order of 0.1), and methanol has a positive partial order of 0.7. A kinetic constant of 5.57 · 10-6 mol0.4 · (m3)0.6 · gcat-1 · s-1 at 200 °C and an activation energy of 73.9 kJ · mol-1 complete the description of the kinetics of the steam reforming. Throughout the comparisons, we showed that the catalyst coated in the microchannels has an initial rate for the steam reforming 30% higher than the original catalyst in fixed bed. We can therefore conclude that the catalyst modification procedure does not diminish the catalyst activity. This was also shown by comparing our results with results available in the scientific literature for similar catalysts. CO2 selectivity remains high and constant then decreases as 90% conversion is approached. Working with an excess of water with respect to methanol contributes to keeping the selectivity high. A molar ratio of 1.2 is a good compromise between selectivity and increased energy costs due to the vaporization of the additional water. It's also beneficial to work at conversions below 90% to be in the high selectivity domain and to diminish the inhibiting influence of hydrogen. Finally, we showed that this catalyst deactivates over 100 hours at a temperature of 300 °C. A kinetic model for the deactivation at temperatures between 300 °C and 330 °C was established. In chapter 6 the total oxidation of methanol was studied. A cobalt based catalyst was developed to allow the synchronization of the two reactions temperatures. The minimum temperature for complete conversion for the total oxidation reaction must clearly not exceed an acceptable working temperature for the steam reforming catalyst (i.e. a temperature that results in an acceptable catalyst lifetime). A kinetic analysis determined partial orders for methanol and oxygen as 0.67, the kinetic constant at 230 °C as 5.45 · 10-3 mmol-0.33 · m4 · (gcat · s)-1 and the activation energy as 130 kJ · mol-1. The copper based catalyst used for the steam reforming of methanol was also active for the total oxidation of methanol. Unfortunately the minimal temperature to ensure a total conversion was not compatible with the working temperature of the steam reforming. In chapter 7, the results concerning the coupling of the two previously studied reactions are presented. The numerous fittings and cables necessary for the operation of the reactor didn't allow the reactor to be run in an autothermal mode. Therefore constant, not regulated, heating was used to compensate the thermal losses. By coupling the two reactions and by studying the dynamic response time of the reactor (temperature and conversion of the steam reforming reaction) at the time of stopping and starting the oxidation reaction, we've seen that the temperature increase was around +10 °C within 60 seconds and that the conversion for the steam reforming of the methanol fitted well with the temperature increase. This reactor also has good dynamics and responds quickly to feed variations. When the coupling mode was changed from co-current to counter-current we noticed a significant increase in conversion. Furthermore, selectivity in counter-current mode remained high, even for conversion approaching 100%.
