Abstract

Isogeometric shape optimization has been now studied for over a decade. This contribution aims at compiling the key ingredients within this promising framework, with a particular attention to sensitivity analysis. Based on all the researches related to isogeometric shape optimization, we present a global overview of the process which has emerged. The principal feature is the use of two refinement levels of the same geometry: a coarse level where the shape updates are imposed and a fine level where the analysis is performed. We explain how these two models interact during the optimization, and especially during the sensitivity analysis. We present new theoretical developments, algorithms, and quantitative results regarding the analytical calculation of discrete adjoint-based sensitivities. In order to highlight the versatility of this sensitivity analysis method, we perform eight benchmark optimization examples with different types of objective functions (compliance, displacement field, stress field, and natural frequencies), different types of isogeometric element (2D and 3D standard solids, and a Kirchhoff-Love shell), and different types of structural analysis (static and vibration). The numerical performances of the analytical sensitivities are compared with approximate sensitivities. The results in terms of accuracy and numerical cost make us believe that the presented method is a viable strategy to build a robust framework for shape optimization.

Trust-region methods based on radial basis functions with application to biomedical imaging

We have developed a new derivative-free algorithm based on Radial Basis Functions (RBFs). Derivative-free optimization is an active field of research and several algorithms have been proposed recently. Problems of this nature in the industrial setting are quite frequent. The reason is that in a number of applications the optimization process contains simulation packages which are treated as black boxes. The development of our own algorithm was originally motivated by an application in biomedical imaging: the medical image registration problem. The particular characteristics of this problem have incited us to develop a new optimization algorithm based on trust-region methods. However it has been designed to be generic and to be applied to a wide range of problems. The main originality of our approach is the use of RBFs to build the models. In particular we have adapted the existing theory based on quadratic models to our own models and developed new procedures especially designed for models based on RBFs. We have tested our algorithm called BOOSTERS against state-of-the-art methods (UOBYQA, NEWUOA, DFO). On the medical image registration problem, BOOSTERS appears to be the method of choice. The tests on problems from the CUTEr collection show that BOOSTERS is comparable to, but not better than other methods on small problems (size 2-20). It is performing very well for medium size problems (20-80). Moreover, it is able to solve problems of dimension 200, which is considered very large in derivative-free optimization. We have also developed a new class of algorithms combining the robustness of derivative-free algorithms with the faster rate of convergence characterizing Newtonlike-methods. In fact, they define a new class of algorithms lying between derivative-free optimization and quasi-Newton methods. These algorithms are built on the skeleton of our derivative-free algorithm but they can incorporate the gradient when it is available. They can be interpreted as a way of doping derivative-free algorithms with derivatives. If the derivatives are available at each iteration, then our method can be seen as an alternative to quasi-Newton methods. At the opposite, if the derivatives are never evaluated, then the algorithm is totally similar to BOOSTERS. It is a very interesting alternative to existing methods for problems whose objective function is expensive to evaluate and when the derivatives are not available. In this situation, the gradient can be approximated by finite differences and its costs corresponds to n additional function evaluations assuming that Rn is the domain of definition of the objective function. We have compared our method with CFSQP and BTRA, two gradient-based algorithms, and the results show that our doped method performs best. We have also a theoretical analysis of the medical image registration problem based on maximization of mutual information. Most of the current research in this field is concentrated on registration based on nonlinear image transformation. However, little attention has been paid to the theoretical properties of the optimization problem. In our analysis, we focus on the continuity and the differentiability of the objective function. We show in particular that performing a registration without extension of the reference image may lead to discontinuities in the objective function. But we demonstrate that, under some mild assumptions, the function is differentiable almost everywhere. Our analysis is important from an optimization point of view and conditions the choice of a solver. The usual practice is to use generic optimization packages without worrying about the differentiability of the objective function. But the use of gradient-based methods when the objective function is not differentiable may result in poor performance or even in absence of convergence. One of our objectives with this analysis is also that practitioners become aware of these problems and to propose them new algorithms having a potential interest for their applications.

The design and minaturization of microwave circuits involves the analysis and optimization of a large varity of structures, which, in general, are based on arbritrary objects embedded in also arbritary media. The most common situation is found when optimizing terminal antennas, whose main constraint is the antenna's volume, which must be fitted into a specified space, which in general is the phone or laptop case. This kind of antennas can also include stratified media, oblique metallizations, dielectric objects, waveguide components, in their definition making their analysis more difficult from the numeric point of view. The complete treatment of this kind of problems has been performed traditionally using Finite Differences or Finite Elements software, while it is more rare to find Method of Moments implementations for the solution of this kind of general problems. The Method of Moments has a certain number of advantages as the inclusion of radiation conditions or stratified media in the Green's function of the problem. Due to this it is possible to mesh only the surfaces or boundary conditions that are not included in the Green's function definition, obtaining, for instance, a more natural radiation boundary condition compared to other fullwave methods. The other big concern is the optimization of this kind of structures. In general the structures we are dealing with in this work can have very irregular shapes, in order to fit within the required volume constraints. The traditional optimizations techniques based on the gradient or conjugated gradient are not efficient when optimizing functions containning multiple minima and a large search space, which is the case in the optimization of terminal antennas. When miniaturizing terminal antennas or just a simple microstrip filter, the number of unknowns can be very large, and the different optimization variables can vary within wide limits in the search space. In this situation the Genetic Algorithms are ideal for seeking the global optimum solution of our problem. This work covers the analysis and optimization of microwave circuits, including antennas and filters in microstrip and waveguide technologies, paying more attention to the implementation of the Method of Moments (MoM) in conjugation with the Mixed Potential Integral Equation (MPIE) and Electric/Magnetic Field Integral Equation (EFIE/MFIE). The work has been split into 3 main goals: The analysis of 3 dimensional structures in stratified media, including arbritary shaped dielectric bodies using the Method of Moments, (MPIE,EFIE,MFIE). The analysis of shielded environments and more precisely the analysis of retangular waveguide cavities with the Method of Moments. The implementation of several optimization techniques, emcompassed in the frame of genetic algorithms, for the design and miniaturization of terminal antennas and microstrip filters. Some relevant examples linked to the efficiency and accuracy of the different methods and techiques explained in this work are included in each chapter, yielding to practical results suitable to be used in real life design problems. The main contributions of this work can be summarized as follows: In Chapter 2 we have developed the interpolation of 3D Green's function to the general solution of dielectric objects embedded in multilayered media. The interpolation method itself is preceeded by a spectral extraction of the quasi-static terms. This technique, very often applied in complex images techniques, has been applied to our specific Green's function problem yielding very good results in terms of accuracy and Green's function computation time. Another contribution, also emcompassed in Chapter 2, is the integration of the static part of the field dyadic G̿EM, performed by splitting the field dyadic into TM and TE components, allowing then an analytical integration of the dyadic terms in stratified media. In the frame of shielded environments in Chapter 3, the most important contribution is the extension of Ewald's acceleration technique to full electric and magnetic problems, allowing the acceleration of the field dyadic G̿EM and thus permit the extension of the MoM to the simulation of arbritary metallic shapes coupled to apertures through Ewald's approach. In Chapter 4 the most important contribution is the implementation of a Bayesian optimiser based on the estimation of probability made by dependencies trees. The dependency tree based method found in [1] and later in [2] has been adapted to the terminal antenna miniaturization yielding to excellent results in optimisation time and quality of the solution provided by the optimiser. Our implementation of the dependency tree method was found to be better than the traditional method used in this kind of problems. Chapter 4 contains also an implementation of the growing cells method presented in [3] for the specific problem of optimising pseudo periodic structures, like microwave filters, yielding to a powerful interpolating method which accelerates the optimisation process of microwaves devices whose fitness response is very time consuming.

Numerical modeling of cohesive sediment transport and bed morphology in estuaries

Two major lines of investigation have been pursued in this thesis: (1) More efficient, robust and realistic numerical techniques are designed for the simulation of complex turbulent fluid flows; (2) A new algorithm and its analysis is performed in the context of multiphasic fluid flow, for a cohesive fine-grained sediment (fluid mud) transport in estuaries. Estuaries exist between marine and freshwater system where waters of different physical, chemical and biological composition meet, combine and disperse primarily due to tidal influences. In the present thesis, the behavior of cohesive sediment in estuaries is reviewed based on the existing literature. Basic theories and recent developments are introduced to describe the formation of fluid mud from a very dilute suspension and its motion down a natural river bed with complex bathymetry. The present work contributes to the numerical simulation of complex turbulent multiphasic fluid flows encountered in estuarine channels, with the aim of the better understanding of the underlying physical processes as well as predicting realistically the cohesive sediment transport and bed morphology in such a zone. The model is based on the mass preserving method by using the so-called Raviart-Thomas finite element on the unstructured mesh in the horizontal plane. In the vertical, the computational domain is divided into number of layers at predefined heights and the method uses a conventional conforming P1 finite element scheme, with the advantage that the lowermost and uppermost layers variable height allow a faithful representation of the time-varying bed and free surface, respectively. Concerning the modeling of turbulence, the research effort focuses on the turbulence two-equation k - ε closure for the vertical parameterization of eddy viscosity. More precisely, a robust up-to-date algorithm is used for this issue. The new methodology is developed with the aim to account for more general relevant effects in the closure. The proposed model offers the capability to cope with the stiffness problem introduced by the large difference between the solid phase flow time scale and the hydrodynamic one, by using a sub-cycling strategy, whereas the splitting scheme is adopted with the aim of stability and the positivity of the relevant turbulent variables. The flexibility of the model and its performance are evaluated on several free-surface flow configurations with increasing complexity : homogeneous unsteady non-uniform flows in plane open channel flows, U-shaped (193°) curved open channel flow. Concerning the cohesive sediment transport, most of the existing models in the literature assume the analogous transport characteristics with that of the coarse sediment and adopt the relevant developed sediment transport for the latter to treat the former. Moreover, these existing models do not account for the consolidation of the mud-bed. The present research effort focused on a novel methodology based on the realistic empirical relationships, which accounts for the mutually exclusive processes for re-suspension and/or erosion and deposition of fine sediment, whereas only a limited range of bed shear stresses is allowed for simultaneous erosion and deposition to occur. Hence, on this basis, the new model investigated the bed morphology evolution by taking into account of the fluidization and/or consolidation of the fluid mud, which was handled by modeling the bed in three layers: (i) the mud-bed layer, (ii) the partially consolidated bed and (iii) the fully consolidated bed. The prediction of deposition/re-suspension using these two different methods lead to a non negligible difference in the results. Therefore, investigation of the true mechanism of erosion/deposition processes for cohesive sediments and their implementation in the numerical model is very important. This suggests that a realistic prediction must account for the fresh mud-bed re-suspension once deposited, as well as the consolidation and/or fluidization of the mud-bed deposits. Finally, the capability and improvements of the model are demonstrated, and its predicting performance is successfully evaluated by applying it to the simulation of the Po River Estuary (PRE) in Italy, which is the main source of river water discharge into the Northern Adriatic Sea. The analysis showed that the consolidation/fluidization process at the bed may have important influence on the prediction of bed morphology evolution. The three-layer approach used in this thesis is a first attempt to model these processes in detail within a numerical model.
