Tightening weak lensing constraints on the ellipticity of galaxy-scale dark matter haloes

Abstract

Cosmological simulations predict that galaxies are embedded into triaxial dark matter haloes, which appear approximately elliptical in projection. Weak gravitational lensing allows us to constrain these halo shapes and thereby test the nature of dark matter. Weak lensing has already provided robust detections of the signature of halo flattening at the mass scales of groups and clusters, whereas results for galaxies have been somewhat inconclusive. Here we combine data from five weak lensing surveys (NGVSLenS, KiDS/KV450, CFHTLenS, CS82, and RCSLenS, listed in order of most to least constraining) in order to tighten observational constraints on galaxy-scale halo ellipticity for photometrically selected lens samples. We constrain f(h), the average ratio between the aligned component of the halo ellipticity and the ellipticity of the light distribution, finding f(h) = 0.303(-0.079)(+0.080) f h = 0 . 303 - 0.079 + 0.080 for red lens galaxies and f(h) = 0.217(-0.159)(+0.160) f h 217 - 0.159 + 0.160 for blue lens galaxies when assuming elliptical Navarro-Frenk-White density profiles and a linear scaling between halo ellipticity and galaxy ellipticity. Our constraints for red galaxies constitute the currently most significant (3.8 sigma) systematics-corrected detection of the signature of halo flattening at the mass scale of galaxies. Our results are in good agreement with expectations from the Millennium Simulation that apply the same analysis scheme and incorporate models for galaxy-halo misalignment. Assuming these misalignment models and the analysis assumptions stated above are correct, our measurements imply an average dark matter halo ellipticity for the studied red galaxy samples of |E-h|=0.174 +/- 0.046, where |E-h| = (1-q)/(1+q) relates to the ratio q=b/a of the minor and major axes of the projected mass distribution. Similar measurements based on larger upcoming weak lensing data sets can help to calibrate models for intrinsic galaxy alignments, which constitute an important source of systematic uncertainty in cosmological weak lensing studies.

Weak Gravitational Lensing by Large-Scale Structures

There is now very strong evidence that our Universe is undergoing an accelerated expansion period as if it were under the influence of a gravitationally repulsive “dark energy” component. Furthermore, most of the mass of the Universe seems to be in the form of non-luminous matter, the so-called “dark matter”. Together, these “dark” components, whose nature remains unknown today, represent around 96 % of the matter-energy budget of the Universe. Unraveling the true nature of the dark energy and dark matter has thus, obviously, become one of the primary goals of present-day cosmology. Weak gravitational lensing, or weak lensing for short, is the effect whereby light emitted by distant galaxies is slightly deflected by the tidal gravitational fields of intervening foreground structures. Because it only relies on the physics of gravity, weak lensing has the unique ability to probe the distribution of mass in a direct and unbiased way. This technique is at present routinely used to study the dark matter, typical applications being the mass reconstruction of galaxy clusters and the study of the properties of dark halos surrounding galaxies. Another and more recent application of weak lensing, on which we focus in this thesis, is the analysis of the cosmological lensing signal induced by large-scale structures, the so-called “cosmic shear”. This signal can be used to measure the growth of structures and the expansion history of the Universe, which makes it particularly relevant to the study of dark energy. Of all weak lensing effects, the cosmic shear is the most subtle and its detection requires the accurate analysis of the shapes of millions of distant, faint galaxies in the near infrared. So far, the main factor limiting cosmic shear measurement accuracy has been the relatively small sky areas covered. Next-generation of wide-field, multicolor surveys will, however, overcome this hurdle by covering a much larger portion of the sky with improved image quality. The resulting statistical errors will then become subdominant compared to systematic errors, the latter becoming instead the main source of uncertainty. In fact, uncovering key properties of dark energy will only be achievable if these systematics are well understood and reduced to the required level. The major sources of uncertainty resides in the shape measurement algorithm used, the convolution of the original image by the instrumental and possibly atmospheric point spread function (PSF), the pixelation effect caused by the integration of light falling on the detector pixels and the degradation caused by various sources of noise. Measuring the Cosmic shear thus entails solving the difficult inverse problem of recovering the shear signal from blurred, pixelated and noisy galaxy images while keeping errors within the limits demanded by future weak lensing surveys. Reaching this goal is not without challenges. In fact, the best available shear measurement methods would need a tenfold improvement in accuracy to match the requirements of a space mission like Euclid from ESA, scheduled at the end of this decade. Significant progress has nevertheless been made in the last few years, with substantial contributions from initiatives such as GREAT (GRavitational lEnsing Accuracy Testing) challenges. The main objective of these open competitions is to foster the development of new and more accurate shear measurement methods. We start this work with a quick overview of modern cosmology: its fundamental tenets, achievements and the challenges it faces today. We then review the theory of weak gravitational lensing and explains how it can make use of cosmic shear observations to place constraints on cosmology. The last part of this thesis focuses on the practical challenges associated with the accurate measurement of the cosmic shear. After a review of the subject we present the main contributions we have brought in this area: the development of the gfit shear measurement method, new algorithms for point spread function (PSF) interpolation and image denoising. The gfit method emerged as one of the top performers in the GREAT10 Galaxy Challenge. It essentially consists in fitting two-dimensional elliptical Sérsic light profiles to observed galaxy image in order to produce estimates for the shear power spectrum. PSF correction is automatic and an efficient shape-preserving denoising algorithm can be optionally applied prior to fitting the data. PSF interpolation is also an important issue in shear measurement because the PSF is only known at star positions while PSF correction has to be performed at any position on the sky. We have developed innovative PSF interpolation algorithms on the occasion of the GREAT10 Star Challenge, a competition dedicated to the PSF interpolation problem. Our participation was very successful since one of our interpolation method won the Star Challenge while the remaining four achieved the next highest scores of the competition. Finally we have participated in the development of a wavelet-based, shape-preserving denoising method particularly well suited to weak lensing analysis.

Gravitationally lensed quasars can be used as powerful cosmological and astrophysical probes. We can (i) infer the Hubble constant H-0 based on the so-called time-delay technique, (ii) unveil substructures along the line-of-sight toward distant galaxies, and (iii) compare the shape and the slope of baryons and dark matter distributions in the inner regions of galaxies. To reach these goals, we need high-accuracy astrometry of the quasar images relative to the lensing galaxy and morphology measurements of the lens. In this work, we first present new astrometry for 11 lenses with measured time delays, namely, JVAS B0218+357, SBS 0909+532, RX J0911.4+0551, FBQS J0951+2635, HE 1104-1805, PG 1115+080, JVAS B1422+231, SBS 1520+530, CLASS B1600+434, CLASS B1608+656, and HE 2149-2745. These measurements proceed from the use of the Magain-Courbin-Sohy (MCS) deconvolution algorithm applied in an iterative way (ISMCS) to near-IR HST images. We obtain a typical astrometric accuracy of about 1-2.5 mas and an accurate shape measurement of the lens galaxy. Second, we combined these measurements with those of 14 other lensing systems, mostly from the COSMOGRAIL set of targets, to present new mass models of these lenses. The modeling of these 25 gravitational lenses led to the following results: 1) in four double-image quasars (HE0047-1746, J1226-006, SBS 1520+530, and HE 2149-2745), we show that the influence of the lens environment on the time delay can easily be quantified and modeled, hence putting these lenses with high priority for time-delay determination; 2) for quadruple-image quasars, the difficulty often encountered in reproducing the image positions to milli-arcsec accuracy (astrometric anomaly problem) is overcome by explicitly including the nearest visible galaxy/satellite in the lens model. However, one anomalous system (RXS J1131-1231) does not show any luminous perturber in its vicinity, and three others (WFI 2026-4536, WFI 2033-4723, and B2045+265) have problematic modeling. These four systems are the best candidates for a pertubation by a dark matter substructure along the line-of-sight; 3) we revisit the correlation between the position angle (PA) and ellipticity of the light and of the mass distribution in lensing galaxies. As in previous studies, we find a significant correlation between the PA of the light and of the mass distributions. However, in contrast with these same studies, we find that the ellipticity of the light and of the mass also correlate well, suggesting that the overall spatial distribution of matter is not very different from the baryon distribution in the inner similar to 5 kpc of lensing galaxies. This offers a new test for high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations.

SEAGLE III: Towards resolving the mismatch in the dark-matter fraction in early-type galaxies between simulations and observations

The central dark-matter fraction of galaxies is sensitive to feedback processes during galaxy formation. Strong gravitational lensing has been effective in the precise measurement of the dark-matter fraction inside massive early-type galaxies. Here, we compare the projected dark-matter fraction of early-type galaxies inferred from the SLACS (Sloan Lens ACS Survey) strong-lens survey with those obtained from the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environment (EAGLE), Illustris, and IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulations. Previous comparisons with some simulations revealed a large discrepancy, with considerably higher inferred dark-matter fractions -by factors of approximate to 2-3- inside half of the effective radius in observed strong-lens galaxies as compared to simulated galaxies. Here, we report good agreement between EAGLE and SLACS for the dark-matter fractions inside both half of the effective radius and the effective radius as a function of the galaxy's stellar mass, effective radius, and total mass-density slope. However, for IllustrisTNG and Illustris, the dark-matter fractions are lower than observed. This work consistently assumes a Chabrier initial mass function (IMF), which suggests that a different IMF (although not excluded) is not necessary to resolve this mismatch. The differences in the stellar feedback model between EAGLE and Illustris and IllustrisTNG are likely the dominant cause of the difference in their dark-matter fraction and density slope.
