Occupant satisfaction with indoor environmental quality, sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms and self-reported productivity before and after relocation into WELL-certified office buildings

Recent green building certification programs have put a strong emphasis on occupant health and well-being. For recently emerged WELL certification, we lack evidence about its effectiveness in relation to occupant satisfaction, productivity and health. Here, we compared the results of occupant satisfaction with the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) obtained from the same cohort of employees who transitioned from three non-WELL (two BREEAM and one conventional) to three WELL-certified office buildings. For two out of three building pairs, we found a statistically significant increase in building and workspace satisfaction after relocation to WELL buildings. However, for 55 % of compared cases, there was insignificant difference as the result of relocation. The positive effect of WELL certification was evident for parameters such as building cleanliness and furniture, but there was no difference in satisfaction with noise and visual comfort. Relocation from BREEAM to WELL buildings had insignificant effect on satisfaction with IEQ, except for air quality in one case. Regardless of the certification label, buildings usually did not attain the 80 % standard satisfaction threshold. The satisfaction scores did not alter during the first year of working in WELL buildings. We also observed that the level of certification did not scale with the overall building satisfaction scores. Comparisons between the occurrence of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) symptoms and self-reported productivity scores revealed insignificant differences between WELL and non-WELL buildings, except for symptom of tiredness that was lower in WELL buildings. The effect of Covid-19 measures interfered with the self-reported work abilities of 78 % of occupants.

Alternative techniques to assess road traffic emissions

Today, one of the most important environmental problems in urban areas is air pollution. According to the World Health Organization, air pollution represents a serious risk to human health in many cities of the world. Road traffic is one of the main sources of pollution in cities. Besides, vehicular emissions are released in close proximity to population, increasing the adverse health effects. Road traffic emissions are highly uncertain in developing countries. Existing techniques to assess this source of pollution are expensive and not always accurate. It results difficult for a city from the developing world to afford these techniques and thus, adequate abatement strategies can not be adopted. It is essential to develop methodologies to reduce these uncertainties to manage air quality more effectively. This PhD thesis aims to develop and to implement alternative techniques to assess road traffic emissions. This work focuses on the study of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), this family of pollutants have not been sufficiently studied in cities. The developed techniques were tested during an intensive measuring campaign conducted in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. The motorcycles are the main mode of transport in HCMC, this means of transport has contributed to the progress of this rapidly developing city. The high levels of air pollution, the elevated number of motorcycles and especially the limited funding available, made HCMC an interesting place to test the developed methodologies. In a first stage the results of the measuring campaign were used to assess the roadside levels of pollution in HCMC. During the HCMC campaign, 19 C2-C6 VOCs were monitored on-line at roadside level together with other important pollutants. Results show that there is a severe air pollution problem in HCMC. The pollutants that are produced by road traffic are identified by means of a Principal Components Analysis (PCA) receptor Model. The PCA shows that all the VOCs monitored (except isoprene) are produced by motorcycles. It is necessary to develop and to encourage the use of alternative modes of transport in HCMC. The use of the on-line roadside pollutants monitoring together with the PCA showed to be a good first approach to assess the road traffic emissions. This is an affordable technique and it is strongly recommended to use it in cities with limited financial means to study the air pollution problem. This work also presents a new method to estimate road traffic emission factors (EFs). This method is based on a long term tracer experiment conducted during the HCMC campaign. The results of the HCMC tracer experiment were used together with traffic counts and pollutant measurements to calculate the dispersion factors and afterwards the EFs. Estimated EFs for HCMC are within the range of EFs estimated in other studies. Additionally, a Computational Fluid Dynamics Model (CFD) is used to critically evaluate the proposed methodology. The evaluations show that it is possible to accurately estimate the EFs from tracer studies. The methodology proposed here results in an interesting and promising alternative to estimate the EFs. All the techniques presented in this work offer several advantages. Data obtained serve for different purposes at the same time and their use can provide valuable information for urban air quality assessment. For example, concentrations of pollutants are determined at roadside level, as well as their evolution in time, this information is useful for exposure studies. Roadside monitoring can be used to identify the pollutants that are directly emitted by road traffic. Results from the tracer study can be used to estimate the EFs under real urban conditions and to validate dispersion models which in turn can be used in the future to evaluate abatement strategies for such streets.

Indoor air quality investigation before and after relocation to WELL-certified office buildings

Air pollutant exposure in workplace environments has been associated with health and cognitive outcomes of workers. While green building certification programs have been instrumental in promoting indoor air quality (IAQ), the present literature indicates inconsistent evidence. Recent emergence and proliferation of WELL certification program that prioritizes human health has evoked new questions about its effectiveness in relation to IAQ. To investigate the effectiveness of the WELL certification, we have quantitatively compared IAQ results before and after relocation to two WELL-certified office buildings using the same cohort of occupants. Physical measures included integrated samples of TVOC, individual VOC, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, NO2, SO2, O3 and longitudinal records of CO2 and size-resolved particles. Complementary survey responses about satisfaction with IAQ and thermal comfort were collected from ~250 employees. For the majority of air pollutants, there was no significant concentration difference between non-WELL and WELL buildings, but not always. The WELL-certified buildings had substantially higher levels of TVOC and individual VOC associated with paints, especially shortly after the relocation. However, there was statistically significant improvement in IAQ satisfaction after relocation into WELL buildings regardless of the air pollution levels, possibly confounded by thermal environment, awareness of the WELL certification or other non-measurable factors.

Clean air policies are key for successfully mitigating Arctic warming

A tighter integration of modeling frameworks for climate and air quality is urgently needed to assess the impacts of clean air policies on future Arctic and global climate. We combined a new model emulator and comprehensive emissions scenarios for air pollutants and greenhouse gases to assess climate and human health co-benefits of emissions reductions. Fossil fuel use is projected to rapidly decline in an increasingly sustainable world, resulting in far-reaching air quality benefits. Despite human health benefits, reductions in sulfur emissions in a more sustainable world could enhance Arctic warming by 0.8 °C in 2050 relative to the 1995–2014, thereby offsetting climate benefits of greenhouse gas reductions. Targeted and technically feasible emissions reduction opportunities exist for achieving simultaneous climate and human health co-benefits. It would be particularly beneficial to unlock a newly identified mitigation potential for carbon particulate matter, yielding Arctic climate benefits equivalent to those from carbon dioxide reductions by 2050.
