Abstract

In this Letter, we present the photonic nanojet as a phenomenon in a structured light generator system that is implemented to modify the source focal spot size and emission angle. The optical system comprises a microlens array that is illuminated by a focused Gaussian beam to generate a structured pattern in the far field. By introducing a spheroid with different aspect ratios in the focus of the Gaussian beam, the source optical characteristics change, and a photonic nanojet is generated, which will engineer the far-field distribution. To probe the light fields, we implement a high-resolution interferometry setup to extract both the phase and intensity at different planes. We both numerically and experimentally demonstrate that the pattern distribution in the far field can be engineered by a photonic nanojet. As an example, we examine prolate, sphere, and oblate geometries. An interesting finding is that depending on the spheroid geometry, a smaller transverse FWHM of a photonic nanojet with a higher divergence angle produces an increased pattern field of view at the same physical size of the optical system. The generation of wide-angle diffraction patterns can be done in different ways using either thin diffractive optical elements with small features sizes or arrays of microoptics with large optical paths that are thick diffractive optical elements. Our aim is to create as many high contrast diffraction-limited dots in the far-field as possible with a uniform intensity distribution. As a model system, we use a sinusoidal phase grating and as a peculiarity, we introduce non-uniform illumination using a Gaussian beam illumination. By making use of the self-imaging phenomenon, a large number of peaks with uniform distribution are generated for a defined range of the phase grating thicknesses due to the sinusoidal curvature. For very high structures, the pattern distribution is not uniform and it demonstrates that very thick sinusoidal phase gratings are not suitable pattern generators. For simulation, we compare thin element approximation, fast Fourier transform beam propagation method, and the rigorous finite difference time domain method. The large-angle diffraction is considered using a high numerical aperture propagator for far-field simulation. We demonstrate that the beam propagation and the Fraunhofer approximation are not accurate enough. Also, our rigorous near-field calculation versus phase grating thickness confirms the significant influence of reflection of thick structures on the far-field distribution, especially on pattern uniformity. Finally, experiments were carried out to confirm our findings and a good agreement between the simulation and experimental far-field distributions confirms our approach. This thesis presents a novel approach for optical tri-dimensional contouring, requiring only one acquisition to extract a contour depth. It is based on an interferometric setup, using a reduced coherence light source, and is fully adaptable to endoscopic procedure commonly in used in ear-nose-throat (ENT) medicine. It has been demonstrated that the method can be successfully applied to imaging of porcine upper airways. Although this method uses interferometry to obtain depth range measurement, the phase signal is not directly evaluated, rather the location of the coherent superposition of two waves is extracted, and thus provides a robust technique even in harsh environment. The key feature is to extract the coherent area on the image by locating intentionally induced fringes created by off-axis superposition of a smooth reference wave and an object wave coming from a rough or diffusing sample through an optical system with limited aperture. A model for the propagation of the light through the optical system has been developed. It takes into account the broadened emission spectrum of the light source, as well as the statistical speckle effect induced by the illumination of a rough surface with partially coherent light. Simulated results have been carefully compared with measurements, both in the spatial domain and in the Fourier domain (spatial frequencies response), which has permitted to better understand the processes involved in the creation of the interference fringes, and improve the design of the device. Different filters have been investigated in order to extract the depth information from acquired interferograms. By using Gabor filterbanks, which do not need any a priori knowledge of the signal, selectivity of the extracted signal has been enhanced by a factor of 1.3 compared to a simple local Fourier spectrum evaluation, and time of the extraction procedure divided by 6, even when compared to fast iterative calculation in the Fourier spectrum. Moreover, by imposing the frequency and/or orientation of the signal to detect, which can be known by a simple calibration procedure, it has been proved that the selectivity can be further enhanced by a factor of 2.5, keeping the calculation time as short or even shorter. A compact prototype has been designed and built, with a specific multiple fibers arrangement for illumination. The system is separated in two parts: the first one is directly attached to the rigid endoscope, and contains imaging as well as recombining object/reference wave optics, and the detector. It fits into a box with overall dimensions of 115 × 83 × 94 mm. The second part contains the laser source, the scanning arm and the injection optics for the fibered system. It is designed to be left on a small cart. This device can potentially be brought to the bedside, and used during routine endoscopic check-up. Associated with the device, a complete framework has been elaborated in order to simplify the acquisition procedure as well as the signal processing. This results in a fully automated environment taking in charge hardware control, data storage and signal processing, up to the tri-dimensional scene rendering.

On the Characteristics of Highly Confined Light Fields

The Investigation of highly confined light fields created by different mechanisms, such as refraction, diffraction, and scattering, are the main subject of this thesis. We distinguish a specific scattering phenomenon of dielectric microspheres from general definition of light scattering that includes refraction and diffraction. Light confinement has been studied by numerous researchers in theoretical ways. However, the experimental approaches for microstructures were always limited due to the lack of resolution and functionalities of the measurement system. To understand the characteristics of optical fields propagating in free space or emerging form microstructures, intensity is not always sufficient. It is therefore necessary to measure the phase of light. The main goal of this work was to set up an optical instrument that is able to measure the amplitude and phase of the light field in the real 3D object space. By combining an optical interferometer (Mach-Zehnder type) with an optical microscope, we have developed a multi-functional high-resolution interference microscope (HRIM). Phase shifting interferometry (PSI) and the five frame (Schwider-Hariharan) algorithm have been introduced in the HRIM in order to directly measure the phase. Auxiliary techniques have been applied for the first time to the experimental setup of the HRIM. For example, multiple-wavelengths light sources for the study of the spectral dependency, immersion of object space for an enhanced resolution and a phase telescope (Bertrand lens) to image and manipulating the Fourier plane (the back focal plane of the objective) have been demonstrated. In addition to a plane-wave illumination, the engineering of the illumination beams allows to broaden the range of experimental investigations for a given sample, such as wavefront management by focused Gaussian beams and focused Bessel beams, and polarization-induced beam shaping for particular shapes of localized illuminations to a small sample. Our main subject is the confinement of light. Three physical optical mechanisms are discussed in detail: refraction, diffraction and scattering. Discussion is done by examples. We have chosen effects that represent the different effects of physical optics at a microscale: highly focused Gaussian beam for refraction, the spot of Arago and Talbot effect for diffraction and photonic nanojets for scattering. Note that even though scattering in general includes refraction and diffraction, here we use the term "scattering" only for scattered hotspots, i.e., photonic nanojets, by dielectric microspheres. Our study contributes to the understanding of strong confinement in submicron or sub-wavelength dimensions by such effects and show for the first time experimental data on phase and amplitude fields. Basic physical principles, like the Gouy phase shift for focused light were demonstrated for the photonic nanojet, for a complex optical phenomenon where focusing is based on scattering rather than refraction. We present the capabilities of the HRIM system through a series of measurements of aforementioned problems for highly confined light fields. To meet the proper experimental conditions for each problem of interest, the HRIM employs several auxiliary techniques of conventional microscopy, e.g., multiple-wavelengths light sources, an immersion technique, and a manipulation of the Fourier plane (the back focal plane of the objective). Engineering of the illumination including polarization-induced beam shaping broadens the range of applications of the instrument and we illustrate this by examples. Furthermore, the HRIM can be operated in two distinguished modes for measurements of the axial phase evolution, "longitudinal-differential mode" or "propagation mode". The longitudinal differential mode directly visualizes peculiar phase evolutions along the optical axis used to prove the phase anomalies. The HRIM with auxiliary techniques therefore serves as a powerful tool for the investigation of highly confined light fields in small volumes.
