Sodium Superionic Conductors (NASICONs) as Cathode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have developed rapidly owing to the high natural abundance, wide distribution, and low cost of sodium. Among the various materials used in SIBs, sodium superion conductor (NASICON)-based electrode materials with remarkable structural stability and high ionic conductivity are one of the most promising candidates for sodium storage electrodes. Nevertheless, the relatively low electronic conductivity of these materials makes them display poor electrochemical performance, significantly limiting their practical application. In recent years, the strategies of enhancing the inherent conductivity of NASICON-based cathode materials have been extensively studied through coating the active material with a conductive carbon layer, reducing the size of the cathode material, combining the cathode material with various carbon materials, and doping elements in the bulk phase. In this paper, we review the recent progress in the development of NASICON-based cathode materials for SIBs in terms of their synthesis, characterization, functional mechanisms, and performance validation/optimization. The advantages and disadvantages of such SIB cathode materials are analyzed, and the relationship between electrode structures and electrochemical performance as well as the strategies for enhancing their electrical conductivity and structural stability is highlighted. Some technical challenges of NASICON-based cathode materials with respect to SIB performance are analyzed, and several future research directions are also proposed for overcoming the challenges toward practical applications.

Conductivity, dielectric and piezoelectric properties of SrBi4Ti4O15

Strontium Bismuth Titanate is a very promising material for high temperature piezoelectric applications, its elevated ferroelectric phase transition (530°C), linear piezoelectric properties under low field and relatively low room temperature conductivity (compared to others Bismuth Titanates) make it very attractive for precision sensors. However, under severe conditions (low frequency, high field, high temperature or low oxygen partial pressure) some of those advantages disappear. Piezoelectric response is dominated by charge drift in general becomes unstable. Above all, at high temperature and low oxygen partial pressure, a large conductivity increase reduces the piezoelectric efficiency of the material, in this work, electrical conductivity, piezoelectric properties and dielectric permittivity of SrBIT ceramic have been investigated in conditions of high temperature, low oxygen partial pressure, low to moderate driving field and frequency. As a result of this research, a better understanding of SrBIT properties was achieved. Thanks to a careful study of SrBIT processing as a bulk ceramic, a reproducible route was established. Many basic mechanisms leading to both SrBIT crystallization and sintering have been identified. It was demonstrated that a detailed knowledge of the exact processing conditions is required in order to achieve high quality material. DC conductivity measurements were carried out as a function of temperature, oxygen partial pressure and dopant concentration. It was found that the apparent activation energy for conduction for undoped SrBIT was 1 eV between 140 and 220°C and 1.5 eV between 450 and 700°C. Decrease of the activation energy in the lower temperature range has been discussed considering grain boundary conductivity, as a transition from electronic to ionic conduction or as consequence of small polarons conduction. It was shown that lower activation energy resulted from Manganese doping (0.5 eV), this was interpreted as either growing influence of grain boundary conductivity as dopant concentration increases or as shallow hole trap formation. DC conductivity measurements and acceptor/donor doping experiments demonstrated p-type conductivity in the low temperature range (up to 220°C) as donor doping decreases conductivity, while oxygen partial pressure controlled measurements indicated n-type conductivity at higher temperature (above 700°C). An electrical impedance analysis was performed with several equivalent circuits. The aim of these models was to simulate the impedance of SrBIT. The best approximation was found with a distributed element of Havriliak-Negami type. However, as the physical justification for this circuit was not clear, the investigation of the grain, grain boundary and electrode impedances was performed with multiple discrete parallel RC elements. With temperature, grain size and oxygen activity variations, the identification of three separate contributions as grain, grain boundary and electrode was realized. The anisotropy of conductivity and permittivity was demonstrated with textured material and both DC and AC analysis. With the master curves built for the electrical modulus, it was found that the impedance probably related to Bismuth oxide layers produces an additional high frequency are. From this finding and by comparing characteristic relaxation frequencies of undoped, 2 mol.% Mn and 4 mol.% Nb SrBIT, it was determined that conductivity is higher in the ab plane direction than in the c direction within both perovskite units and Bismuth oxide layers. With conductivity measurements under controlled oxygen partial pressure, it was found that an acceptor-based (intrinsic or extrinsic) model could be used to describe the electrical conductivity under controlled oxygen partial pressure of both undoped and 2 mol.% Mn doped SrBIT. However, as neither a pO2-1/6 region (intrinsic oxygen vacancies compensated by electrons) for undoped SrBIT nor a pO2-1/4 region (oxygen vacancies compensated by singly ionized acceptors) for Mn doped SrBIT were seen, it was concluded that the acceptorcontrolled model is not sufficient for a complete description of SrBIT. For this reason and in order to include the low oxygen partial pressure behavior of undoped SrBIT, a donor-based (intrinsic) model was also considered. The source of intrinsic donors would be in that case Bi3+ cations sitting on Sr2+ sites in the perovskite sublattice. Considering Bismuth vacancies as the negative compensating species, both pO2-1/4 and pO2-independent regions could be predicted with the model. However, even if the donor-controlled model seems to better match conductivity measurements in the full PO2) range, rejecting the acceptor-based model would be an error. It is actually not demonstrated that in SrBIT the concentration of exchanged Bismuth cations is always (all temperature, pressure) larger than the natural acceptor impurity concentration. It is very likely that the cation exchange is dependent of the oxygen partial pressure. It is also not proved as suggested in the literature that direct compensation between exchanged Strontium and Bismuth exists, reducing the net donor-excess. With the acceptor-controlled model, the mass-action constants for reduction and for ionization of intrinsic carriers across the band gap were determined. The band gap of SrBIT was estimated to be 3.5 eV. The ionic conductivity of SrBIT was determined at high temperature with measurements under controlled oxygen partial pressure. It was found that the electrical conductivity of SrBIT is probably mixed (electronic and ionic) as the estimation of the transference number provided quite large values (t=0.8 at 800°C). From electronic and ionic conductivity data, mixed conduction can actually be predicted in a large temperature range (above room temperature). The piezoelectric measurements using direct effect demonstrated that it is actually possible to unlock piezoelectrically active ferroelectric domain walls and create non-linear piezoelectric properties in undoped SrBIT. This occurs above a threshold elastic field, which is thermally activated. With a piezoelectric composite, it was demonstrated that the electromechanical coupling between two different phases creates a piezoelectric relaxation. This one could be positive or negative depending on the respective properties of each composite's component. It was shown experimentally that a small temperature change is sufficient to transform a positive relaxation into a negative one. While these experiments did not provide a detailed microstructural explanation for the piezoelectric relaxation observed in 2 mol.% Mn doped SrBIT, they gave a first insight into an original phenomenological approach. Microstructure and piezoelectric properties were related with the calculation of a piezoelectric relaxation composite made of two textured samples. This demonstrated that a piezoelectric relaxation may occur just because of anisotropy. Microstructural reproduction of this coupling is actually an important feature of Aurivillius phases.

Alternative anode materials for methane oxidation in solid oxide fuel cells

Fuel Cells are electrochemical devices that are able to directly convert chemical energy to electrical energy, without any Carnot limitation. Hence, their energy efficiencies are relatively high. Among the various types of fuel cells, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) are operated at high temperatures and in principle can run on various fuels such as natural gas and hydrogen. As natural gas is sought to become one of the main fuels of the next decades, its direct feed to a SOFC is desirable as the reaction free energy is high CH4 + 2O2 = CO2 + 2H2O, ΔrG°800°C = -800.8kJ/mol At present, conventional SOFC are operated with pure hydrogen or partially to fully reformed natural gas implying an efficiency penalty. SOFC anodes are generally made of electrocatalytically active Ni-YSZ cermet. Pure CH4 is not fed directly to the anode, because of problems associated with the anode deactivation and coking as CH4 leads to the detachment of Ni particles from the YSZ support and their encapsulation by carbon. To overcome this problem, partially oxidized or reformed CH4 is used. For SOFCs running on direct CH4 feed, alternative anode materials to Ni-YSZ, or new anode formulations are necessary. However, in this case, several parameters influence the anode performance and stability. The anodes should withstand reduction at a low PO2 of around 10-24 atm, be compatible with the SOFC electrolyte, possess an acceptable conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient, and appropriate catalytic and electrocatalytic properties along with low coking activity. LaCrO3 and CeO2-based materials as well as some metal catalysts were studied here for their potential application as anodes in direct oxidation of CH4. This choice of materials was made as lanthanum chromite and ceria-based materials are mixed conductors known to resist quite well to the very reducing conditions in SOFC as they are commonly used for interconnect and electrolyte materials respectively. Moreover, these compounds possess some catalytic activity for CH4 activation and combustion. LaCrO3 and CeO2-based materials show rather low electrical conductivity (on the order of 1 S/cm in reducing conditions), necessitating the application of an extra material for proper current collection. Nevertheless, these oxides possess many of the stringent characteristics cited above. For SOFC anode purposes, LaCrO3-based compounds, substituted with Ca, Sr, Mg, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni, were synthesized by a modified citrate route from nitrate precursors. An optimal calcination temperature of 1100°C was found to be necessary to obtain XRD-pure yet sinteractive compounds. Conductivity measurements in air and in reducing atmospheres of 10-21 atm showed that the La A-site substituents (Ca and Sr) influenced the conductivity more than the Cr B-site substituents (Mg, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni). In humidifed H2, the total conductivity was maximally of 6.5 S/cm. Surface reaction with YSZ electrolyte was evidenced by SEM, XPS and SIMS, in reducing conditions, especially under current load, when these powders were applied as anodes. A current induced demixing effect was noted for heavily substituted LaCrO3. Ceria-based compounds, doped with Y, Nb, Pr and Gd, were synthesized through 3 different techniques: the solid-state method, coprecipitation and the NbCl5 route. The coprecipitation route was found to be most appropriate for Y, Pr and Gd, whereas for Nb a modified precipitation and the NbCl5 technique were the most efficient. Co-doping of Nb and Gd or Pr was studied in order to increase the electronic as well as the ionic conductivity in CeO2. Among all dopants, Nb was found to promote most the adhesion to YSZ electrolyte sheets. Adding Nb to Gd-doped ceria improved the electrode adhesion on YSZ sheets, but deteriorated its conductivity in oxidizing conditions. No interfacial reaction with YSZ was observed by HRTEM when Nb-doped ceria anodes were sintered on YSZ at 1200°C/4h. Catalytic measurements were undertaken with these materials in CH4 rich atmospheres. Different reaction mixtures were chosen to simulate the various SOFC operating conditions: partial oxidation, CO2 reforming by recycling and H2O reforming. Among the different elements, Sr and Ni were found to be the most active substituents for LaCrO3, as they promote all three types of reactions. The combination of both elements is favorable not only for catalytic use, but also for electrode application as they tend to increase the electronic conductivity of the material. Temperature programmed oxidation (TPO) and TEM made on the catalysts after runs in CH4, showed a very low carbon coverage over these oxides, except in the case of Fe substitution, over which carbon deposition was promoted. XPS analysis showed also that all B-site substituted compounds did not segregate after the catalytic runs whereas Ca and Sr (A-site substituents) tended to segregate in H2 and H2O rich atmospheres. Thermodynamic calculations, made using correlations developed in literature, show that Ca and Sr are expected to segregate in H2 and H2O rich atmospheres as they tend to form volatile hydroxyl species. Mesoscopic manganese based cathode materials for high voltage lithium ion batteries

Alternative cathode materials were investigated for application to high voltage lithium ion batteries. Manganese based materials were considered due to the low cost and environmentally sustainable impact. Layer-structured oxide and phospho-olivine materials were prepared by a sol-gel method to obtain mesoscopic particles. The particle size of the layered Li1.15Mn0.545Ni0.245Al0.06O2 material was 200 nm. A ball-milling process reduced the particle size to 60 nm. Doping with Ni and Al in the layered Li1.15Mn0.545Ni0.245Al0.06O2 material provided a redox potential at 4.1 V vs. Li+/Li. The specific capacities of 60 and 200 nm particle sized materials were 150 and 125 mAh/g, respectively at C/10. The 60 nm sized material showed a higher lithium intercalation rate than the 200 nm sized material. Particularly, at high charge-discharge rates (1C and 5C), 127 and 85 mAh/g, respectively compared to 95 and 10 mAh/g at 1C and 5C, respectively of 200 nm material. However, the 60 nm sized material degraded faster upon cycling after 80 cycles. The increased impedance indicates a large resistance associated with the interface reaction in the cycled 60 nm particlels. Two types of electrolytes were investigated in the same cathode material. 3-methoxypropionitrile (MPN) with 1M LiN(SO2CF3)2 electrolyte showed faster Li intercalation than ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate (EC/DMC) with 1M LiPF6 at 1C and 5C in complete cells. LiMnPO4 was synthesized by a sol-gel method using glycolic acid. The decomposition temperature was lower in the dried gel prepared under strong acid conditions. Finally, highly ordered crystallites were formed between 520 and 570°C with particle sizes in the range of 140 to 160 nm. Subsequent dry ballmilling reduced the diameter to 130 ± 10 nm and also improved the carbon coating on the active material. LiMnPO4 material provided a redox potential of 4.1 V vs. Li+/Li. Reversible capacities of 156 mAh/g at C/100 and 134 mAh/g at C/10 were measured. At 92 and 79 % of the theoretical value, respectively, these are the highest values reported to date for this material. At faster charging rates, the electrochemical performance was found to be improved when smaller LiMnPO4 particles were used. The LiMnPO4 material showed an excellent capacity retention upon cycling as phosphate framwork is chemically and thermodynamically stable.
