Abstract

Le phénomène de déchristianisation, la baisse de foi et de croyance générale ont entraîné, lors des cinquante dernières années, une désaffectation significative des édifices religieux catholiques en Valais. Autrefois vivants et considérés comme instances sociales majeures des villages alpins, ces derniers connaissent aujourd’hui un abandon progressif qui met en crise la sociabilité qui en émerge. A travers un changement de typologie, d’organisation spatiale et de programmes, le projet propose une nouvelle manière de concevoir l’édifice religieux. Il cherche à replacer l’église au centre de la vie sociale locale et, plus particulièrement, à restituer au village de Mase le caractère spatial particulier du promontoire sur lequel se tient son sanctuaire. Tout en conservant quelques éléments déterminants de l’identité de l’édifice, le projet remplace le monolithe traditionnel de l’église par une série de volumes publics s’inspirant du tissu bâti existant. En se mêlant aux marqueurs religieux conservés, l’intervention propose alors, à travers la rencontre d’objets variés et caractéristiques, une nouvelle lecture du lieu. L’ensemble constitue ainsi une stratification d’époques et raconte, par la mise en scène des divers éléments de cette composition, l’histoire de l’église tout en proposant son ouverture culturelle. Un dialogue respectueux et direct s’établit alors entre le passé et le futur, le sacré et le profane.
