Jahrhundertelang steht ein Baum im Wald, es sei denn, er wird gefällt. Während seines langen Daseins ereignet sich vieles: Stein- und Blitzschlag, Windböen oder meißelnde Spechte hinterlassen ihre Spuren, zum Beispiel als gebrochene Äste, Rindenverletzungen oder Spechthöhlen. Diese sogenannten Habitatbäume bieten unzähligen Tier-, Pflanzen-, Flechten- und Pilzarten Lebensraum. Und eine große Artenvielfalt ist für das reibungslose Funktioneren des Waldes wichtig.
