Ligand Locking on Quantum Dot Surfaces via a Mild Reactive Surface Treatment

At the outermost surface of colloidal QDs are organic surface ligands which dynamically bind and release in solution to control the growth kinetics, control the size/shape of the crystals, passivate surface states, and provide colloidal stability through favorable interactions with the solvent. However, the dynamicity comes at the expense of the stability of the QD suspension. Here, we show that ligands can be permanently locked on the QD surface by a thin layer of an inert metal oxide which forms within the ligand shell, over the headgroup. By interrogating the surface chemistry with different spectroscopic methods, we prove the ligand locking on the QD surface. As a result, an exceptional stability of the coated QD inks is achieved in a wide concentration range, even in the presence of chemically competing surface ligands in solution. We anticipate that this critical breakthrough will benefit different areas related to colloidal QDs, spanning from single-particle studies to displays and solar cells and biological applications. Furthermore, the same chemistry could be easily translated to surface treatments of bulk materials and thin films.

Defect chemistry of methylammonium lead iodide

The present work deals with the defect chemistry and charge transport properties in halide perovskites, and in particular in the archetypal methylammonium lead iodide. These materials are extensively researched due to their very promising application as light-harvesters in solar cells and in other optoelectronic devices. Notwithstanding the numerous studies dealing with these materials (especially with their optical and electronic properties, and with device application), a significant portion of the underlying physics and chemistry is still poorly understood. Indeed, the physico-chemical features behind their exceptional photo-electrochemical properties are still largely unknown. Moreover, these materials suffer from severe degradation processes presently impeding their practical application. In addition, the charge transport in these materials is not purely electronic, but rather shows a significant ionic portion due to mobile ionic defects. The nature of such ion conduction, alongside its effect on the photo-electrochemical properties and on the materials stability, has never been systematically investigated. The study of these aspects is the aim of this thesis, where: At first, we study the charge transport properties of methylammonium lead iodide, with particular attention to the ionic contribution, and we perform a defect chemical study of the compound. We show how the ionic conductivity, in equilibrium conditions, can be unambiguously assigned to mobile iodine vacancies, with an electronic contribution due to electron holes or conduction electron depending on the iodine activity. Secondly, we investigate the light effect on the charge transport previously characterized. Alongside an expected increase of the electronic contribution, we observe a striking enhancement of ionic conductivity in methylammonium lead iodide upon illumination. This remarkable observation is of fundamental relevance for both photovoltaics and solid state ionics fields. Here we also discuss a mechanism for such photo-enhanced ion conduction that relies on electron-ion interaction. Subsequently, we analyze methylammonium lead iodide and other hybrid halide perovskites under oxygen exposure, both in the dark and under illumination. We show that light strongly affects the kinetics of oxygen interaction, so much so that under illumination methylammonium lead iodide completely degrades, while it is metastable in the dark. The oxygen, when incorporated in a sufficient amount in the lattice, also acts as acceptor dopant, greatly varying the ionic and electronic conductivities. We then investigate stability of several halide perovskites with respect to temperature, oxygen, and illumination through thermodynamic considerations. Here we show how many of these processes are expected to be extremely severe for some of the compounds, underlining an important -and intrinsic- bottleneck for the application of these materials. At last, we investigate the short-range ion dynamics in methylammonium lead iodide, since these are linked to stability and electronic transport properties. Here, we show that methylammonium dynamics conforms well to a fast bi-axial rotation becoming isotropic in the cubic phase. In the inorganic lattice, a strong nuclear coupling between Pb and I is present, alongside highly active iodine dynamics.

Exciton Dynamics in 2D Organic Assemblies for Realization of Next-generation Optoelectronic Devices

Supramolecular assemblies of cyanine dye molecules formed by weak van der Waals forces have gained immense attention for their distinct optical properties (high extinction coefficient, narrow absorption and photoluminescence line-width and small Stokes shift) compared to their monomer counterparts. Strong light-matter interaction in the J-aggregates causes coherent exciton migration and high color purity emission. This motivates to fabricate J-aggregate thin films for different opto-electronic devices such as solar cells, where J-aggregates serve as exciton transport channels, organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and polariton lasers. Exciton migration and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the J-aggregates in thin films dictate the efficiency of energy harvesting and light emitting devices, respectively. The main focus of this thesis is the development of a new J-aggregate growth route which favors the formation of large, coherent domains of 2D J-aggregate thin films and to investigate the exciton dynamics. Furthermore, non-radiative decay channels suppressing the PLQY of J-aggregates in thin film and in solution were identified. The coherent crystalline domain size in thin films is typically limited to nanoscale length because dye molecules spontaneously self-assemble already in solution. This can be overcome by maintaining equilibrium between monomers and the critical nucleus of a J-aggregate in solution. This approach is shown here as a successful route to achieve large coherent domains on a functionalized substrate. The growth model was further confirmed with small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) studies. Using time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy, non-radiative decay channels limiting the exciton migration were identified. The results suggest that the increase in domain size and order is directly proportional to the increased radiative decay of the excitons. Furthermore, the PLQY of J-aggregates in water at room temperature is typically ~5%. Upon addition of alkylamine, the quantum yield was drastically improved while maintaining line-width and peak position. Using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), a two-phase region was identified in the water-dye-alkylamine ternary phase diagram in which high PLQY J-aggregates form. From TRPL studies, an increase in radiative lifetime is in agreement with the increase in PLQY. As an application, ultra-narrowband photodetectors were explored owing to the narrow line-width of J-aggregate absorption. The concept proved advantageous over other strategies for narrowing the response width, with competing figure of merits. Realization of an inkjet printed prototype with higher frequency response compared to spin-coated devices highlights their potential for industrial applications. Excitonic channels using J-aggregate nanowires were formed by complexing J-aggregates with dendronized polymers. SAXS studies revealed a core-shell configuration of the DP-J-aggregate hybrid structure. A correlation between polymer conformation and J-aggregates allowed to assemble J-aggregate nanowires as thin films. Centrosymmetric cyanine dimers are known for their non-luminescent nature. Twisted dimer packing of dye molecules in a polymer matrix are confirmed from circular dichroism spectroscopy studies. This explains a strongly red-shifted photoluminescence with high quantum yield in the thin film.

Molecular tunability of surface-functionalized metal nanocrystals for selective electrochemical CO2 reduction

Organic ligands are used in homogeneous catalysis to tune the metal center reactivity; in contrast, clean surfaces are usually preferred in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we demonstrate the potential of a molecular chemistry approach to develop efficient and selective heterogeneous catalysts in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). We have tailor-made imidazolium ligands to promote the CO2RR at the surface of hybrid organic/inorganic electrode materials. We used silver nanocrystals for the inorganic component to obtain fundamental insights into the delicate tuning of the surface chemistry offered by these ligands. We reveal that modifying the electronic properties of the metal surface with anchor groups along with the solid/liquid interface with tail groups is crucial in obtaining selectivities (above 90% FE for CO), which are higher than the non-functionalized Ag nanocrystals. We also show that there is a unique dependency of the CO2RR selectivity on the length of the hydrocarbon tail of these ligands, offering a new way to tune the interactions between the metal surface with the electrolyte and reactants.
