Time-reversed Impulse Response Haptic Demonstrator

2022
Student project
Abstract

The EPFL - LAI is investigating novel haptic technologies for rendering rich vibrotactile feedback in digital musical interfaces. The main objective is to develop an interactive surface that can render multitouch vibrotactile stimuli. As part of this research project, we are experimenting with different means to render vibrotactile feedback. For this particular semester project, we would like to explore the use of the time-reversal effect, in particular by sending the time-reversed impulse responses (TrlR) signal to a set of piezoelectric transducers bonded to a glass surface. This will allow us to obtain a localized peak in a set of predefined positions. At the same time, a 3D touch technology will be integrated to turn the haptic surface into a digital music instrument (DMl).

Electronic musical instrument
An electronic musical instrument or electrophone is a musical instrument that produces sound using electronic circuitry. Such an instrument sounds by outputting an electrical, electronic or digital audio signal that ultimately is plugged into a power amplifier which drives a loudspeaker, creating the sound heard by the performer and listener. An electronic instrument might include a user interface for controlling its sound, often by adjusting the pitch, frequency, or duration of each note.
Sampler (musical instrument)
A sampler is an electronic musical instrument that records and plays back samples (portions of sound recordings). Samples may comprise elements such as rhythm, melody, speech, sound effects or longer portions of music. The mid-20th century saw the introduction of keyboard instruments that played sounds recorded on tape, such as the Mellotron. As technology improved, cheaper standalone samplers with more memory emerged, such as the E-mu Emulator, Akai S950 and Akai MPC. Samples may be loaded or recorded by the user or by a manufacturer.
Music sequencer
A music sequencer (or audio sequencer or simply sequencer) is a device or application software that can record, edit, or play back music, by handling note and performance information in several forms, typically CV/Gate, MIDI, or Open Sound Control (OSC), and possibly audio and automation data for digital audio workstations (DAWs) and plug-ins. The advent of Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) and the Atari ST home computer in the 1980s gave programmers the opportunity to design software that could more easily record and play back sequences of notes played or programmed by a musician.
