He was an invited researcher in the Institut of Advanced Studies in University of São Paulo, and lived in Brazil between 1941 and 1953 as a war refugee.

He is the author with Thea Burns of L'art du pastel (2014) which was translated into English and published by Abbeville Press in 2015 as The art of the pastel. From 2004 to 2006, Saunier was a curator at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris.

His political skills are civil and political rights, domestic policy and the anti-nuclear movement. Wüppesahl was a founder of a pressure group against Krümmel Nuclear Power Plant in Geesthacht 1975. In 1987 he became a member of the Bundestag in the Green Party faction. After leaving the party, he continued his mandate as an independent member of the parliament.
