The Biogeochemical Legacy of Arctic Subglacial Sediments Exposed by Glacier Retreat

During past periods of advance, Arctic glaciers and ice sheets overrode soil, sediments, and vegetation and buried significant stores of organic matter (OM); these glaciers are now shrinking rapidly due to climate warming. Little is known about the biogeochemical processing of the OM buried beneath glacier ice which makes the processes associated with deglaciation difficult to predict. Subglacial sediments exposed at receding glacier fronts may represent a legacy of past biogeochemical processes. Here, we analyzed sediments from retreating fronts of 19 Arctic glaciers for their mineralogical and elemental composition, contents of major nutrients, OM biomarkers (aliphatic lipids and lignin-derived phenols), C-14 age, and microbial community structure. We show the character of the sediments is mostly determined by local glaciation history and bedrock lithology. Most subglacial sediments offer high amounts of readily bioavailable phosphorus (i.e., loose, labile, and Fe/Al P fractions) but lack readily accessible carbon substrates. The subglacial OM originated mainly from overridden terrestrial vascular plants. The results of OM biomarker analysis and C-14 dating suggest the OM substrates degrade in the subglacial environment and are reworked by the resident microbial communities. We argue the biogeochemical legacy of the perishing subglacial environments is an important determinant for the early processes of proglacial ecological succession.

Patterns and Drivers of Extracellular Enzyme Activity in New Zealand Glacier-Fed Streams

Glacier-fed streams (GFSs) exhibit near-freezing temperatures, variable flows, and often high turbidities. Currently, the rapid shrinkage of mountain glaciers is altering the delivery of meltwater, solutes, and particulate matter to GFSs, with unknown consequences for their ecology. Benthic biofilms dominate microbial life in GFSs, and play a major role in their biogeochemical cycling. Mineralization is likely an important process for microbes to meet elemental budgets in these systems due to commonly oligotrophic conditions, and extracellular enzymes retained within the biofilm enable the degradation of organic matter and acquisition of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P). The measurement and comparison of these extracellular enzyme activities (EEA) can in turn provide insight into microbial elemental acquisition effort relative to environmental availability. To better understand how benthic biofilm communities meet resource demands, and how this might shift as glaciers vanish under climate change, we investigated biofilm EEA in 20 GFSs varying in glacier influence from New Zealand’s Southern Alps. Using turbidity and distance to the glacier snout normalized for glacier size as proxies for glacier influence, we found that bacterial abundance (BA), chlorophyll a (Chl a), extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and total EEA per gram of sediment increased with decreasing glacier influence. Yet, when normalized by BA, EPS decreased with decreasing glacier influence, Chl a still increased, and there was no relationship with total EEA. Based on EEA ratios, we found that the majority of GFS microbial communities were N-limited, with a few streams of different underlying bedrock geology exhibiting P-limitation. Cell-specific C-acquiring EEA was positively related to the ratio of Chl a to BA, presumably reflecting the utilization of algal exudates. Meanwhile, cell-specific N-acquiring EEA were positively correlated with the concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and both N- and P-acquiring EEA increased with greater cell-specific EPS. Overall, our results reveal greater glacier influence to be negatively related to GFS biofilm biomass parameters, and generally associated with greater microbial N demand. These results help to illuminate the ecology of GFS biofilms, along with their biogeochemical response to a shifting habitat template with ongoing climate change.

Carbon fluxes and productivity regimes in Alpine streams

High-altitude catchments have a major role in the transport of organic matter to streams due to the storage of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in soils and glacier ice and the subsequent mobilization during the melting processes. Yet, stream function goes beyond the conveying downstream of the terrestrial and glacier derived DOC since they are also highly active in the mineralization, retention and production of organic matter. Stream ecosystem metabolism integrates the processes that regulate the conversion between the organic and inorganic forms of carbon in streams and is a fundamental measure to determine whether carbon accumulates or it is lost within the ecosystem. In a global warming scenario, high-mountain stream ecosystems are faced to modifications in their structure and function as a result of climate-driven hydrological changes. Thus far, despite the active role of alpine streams in the global carbon cycle, studies on the impacts from changes in snowmelt, glacier ice melt and groundwater contribution to streamflow have been largely focusing on alterations in hydrological regimes, water availability, geomorphology and biodiversity. To fill this gap, the aim of this thesis is to examine DOC fluxes dynamics and productivity regimes across a range of glacierized and non-glacierized alpine catchments to anticipate the possible consequences of projected hydrological changes on alpine stream biogeochemistry and ecosystem functioning. This thesis is supported by the collection and analysis of high-frequency time series of physicochemical parameters, geomorphological data and streamwater samples from different Alpine streams with contrasting glacier coverage. The first part of the thesis investigates the response across all the streams of the annual DOC export to runoff primarily driven by snowmelt and glacier melt. In the second part, with the use of dissolved oxygen time series, the ecosystem energetics regimes in a glacier-, groundwater- and snowmelt-fed stream are explored during two years and related to their physical template. The third and last part is focused on providing estimates of gross primary production (GPP) rates for the energetic regimes established in the three Alpine stream types. The obtained results show a varied response of DOC export to runoff across the catchments which was related to the degree of glaciation and vegetation cover. Our findings also reveal different stream ecosystem energetic regimes among the streams and highlight discharge as the major modulator of drivers, such as light, gas exchange rate or stability, on the seasonal and daily dissolved oxygen dynamics. Lastly, the magnitude and the temporal patterns of ecosystem GPP are the result of the light and streambed disturbance conditions that are largely determined by the hydrological and turbidity regime. I argue that glacier shrinkage together with changes in snowmelt hydrology will alter the response of DOC yield to discharge, with consequent impact on the timing and magnitude of the lateral DOC fluxes from terrestrial to stream ecosystems. Also, an eventual reduction in glacier runoff and snowpack duration and content will alter the physical template for primary producers, which may lead to a greater production of autochthonous organic matter across high-mountain streams. Overall, I assume a shift in the magnitude and temporal patterns of energetic inputs, with consequences for the stream biogeochemistry and function.

Modelling carbon and nitrogen turnover in variably saturated soils

Natural ecosystems provide services such as ameliorating the impacts of deleterious human activities on both surface and groundwater. For example, several studies have shown that a healthy riparian ecosystem can reduce the nutrient loading of agricultural wastewater, thus protecting the receiving surface water body. As a result, in order to develop better protection strategies and/or restore natural conditions, there is a growing interest in understanding ecosystem functioning, including feedbacks and nonlinearities. Biogeochemical transformations in soils are heavily inﬂuenced by microbial decomposition of soil organic matter. Carbon and nutrient cycles are in turn strongly sensitive to environmental conditions, and primarily to soil moisture and temperature. These two physical variables affect the reaction rates of almost all soil biogeochemical transformations, including microbial and fungal activity, nutrient uptake and release from plants, etc. Soil water saturation and temperature are not constants, but vary both in space and time, thus further complicating the picture. In order to interpret ﬁeld experiments and elucidate the different mechanisms taking place, numerical tools are beneficial. In this work we developed a 3D numerical reactive-transport model as an aid in the investigation the complex physical, chemical and biological interactions occurring in soils. The new code couples the USGS models (MODFLOW 2000–VSF, MT3DMS and PHREEQC) using an operator-splitting algorithm, and is a further development an existing reactive/density-dependent ﬂow model PHWAT. The model was tested using simplified test cases. Following verification, a process-based biogeochemical reaction network describing the turnover of carbon and nitrogen in soils was implemented. Using this tool, we investigated the coupled effect of moisture content and temperature ﬂuctuations on nitrogen and organic matter cycling in the riparian zone, in order to help understand the relative sensitivity of biological transformations to these processes.
