Military and Art Museum Bunkered into the Landscape

Gonçalo Cruz Ferreira Matos
2023
Student project
Abstract

The project is situated at the entrance of the Sado Estuary, a crucial location for the defense of Lisbon and Setubal. This place witnessed military occupations at various historical periods. Faced with abandonment and destruction, the intervention focuses on the site of the Old Fort (17th c.) and 7th Artillery Battery (WWII), located on top of a cliff. The proposal is defined by a new structure that connects the military buildings (Old Fort, Entrenched Buildings, and 3 Batteries) guiding visitors to understand and discover the place in a unique way. This new structure integrates a museum that features a permanent exhibition on coastal defense and temporary installations of contemporary art. The museum represents the overlapping of three distinct periods: the Old Fort period, the 7th Battery period; and the Museum period. Preserving, adapting, and rebuilding are interconnected actions, that form the very foundation of the museum project itself. The museum appears as a new mark in time connecting and adapting the pre-existing structures. The visitors’ journey is defined by a series of diverse spaces where light guides them through underground areas, creating a sense of surprise and wonder. The proposal works with the topography, mainly through underground spaces, employing the same camouflage logic used in bunkers. The project blends into the landscape, remaining invisible from the outside, without keeping the protagonist away from pre-existing heritage structures and preserving the protected landscape.

Project
A project is any undertaking, carried out individually or collaboratively and possibly involving research or design, that is carefully planned to achieve a particular goal. An alternative view sees a project managerially as a sequence of events: a "set of interrelated tasks to be executed over a fixed period and within certain cost and other limitations". A project may be a temporary (rather than a permanent) social system (work system), possibly staffed by teams (within or across organizations) to accomplish particular tasks under time constraints.
Museum
A museum (mjuːˈziːəm ) is a community service that displays and preserves objects of significance. Many museums have exhibitions of these objects in public display, and some have private collections that are used by researchers and specialists. Compared to a library, a museum hosts a much wider ranges of objects and usually focus around a specific theme such as the arts, science, natural history, local history, and other topics.
Project management
Project management is the process of leading the work of a team to achieve all project goals within the given constraints. This information is usually described in project documentation, created at the beginning of the development process. The primary constraints are scope, time, and budget. The secondary challenge is to optimize the allocation of necessary inputs and apply them to meet pre-defined objectives. The objective of project management is to produce a complete project which complies with the client's objectives.
