Peter LelySir Peter Lely (14 September 1618 – 7 December 1680) was a painter of Dutch origin whose career was nearly all spent in England, where he became the dominant portrait painter to the court. He became a naturalised British subject and was knighted in 1679. Lely was born Pieter van der Faes to Dutch parents in Soest in Westphalia, where his father was an officer serving in the armed forces of the Elector of Brandenburg. Lely studied painting in Haarlem, where he may have been apprenticed to Pieter de Grebber.
Léon HerschtrittLéon Herschtritt (4 May 1936 – 21 November 2020) was a French humanist photographer. He won the Niépce Prize as a young photographer in 1960. Born in Paris 4 May 1936, Herschtritt was imprisoned as a child at the Drancy internment camp during World War II and the German occupation. His family escaped deportation due to his father's British nationality. Undertook his secondary education at the Lycée Voltaire. At fifteen he used his father's Leica to photograph chateaux in the Loire.
Warszawianka (1831)"Warszawianka 1831 roku", "La Varsovienne" ("The Varsovian 1831") is a Polish patriotic song written by Casimir François Delavigne with music by Karol Kurpiński. The song was written in support of the November Uprising of 1830–1831. The French poet Casimir Delavigne was fascinated and inspired by the news of the uprising making its way to Paris and wrote the words, which were translated into Polish by the historian, journalist, and poet Karol Sienkiewicz (great-uncle of novelist Henryk Sienkiewicz).
Eduard WölfflinEduard Wölfflin (1 January 1831, Basel – 8 November 1908, Basel) was a Swiss classical philologist. He was the father of art historian Heinrich Wölfflin. From 1848 to 1854, Wölfflin studied at the Universities of Basel and Göttingen, where he was a pupil of Karl Friedrich Hermann. Following graduation, he worked as an assistant librarian at the University of Basel (1854–61). Wölfflin spent the next decade as schoolteacher in Winterthur (1861–71), and in the meantime became an associate professor in Latin philology (1869).
