A linear water-sol. quaternary ammonium polymer having a homopolymeric chain of repeating unit I (R1 and R2 = linear or branched alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl groups having 1-6 C atoms; X- = anion and n = 30-220) was prepd. The polymer has a molar mass distribution ?1.5 and is used as a displacer in a displacement mode of chromatog. Thus, diallyldimethylammonium chloride and peroxy initiator dissolved in water was heated at 50 Deg to give a polymer having no.-av. mol. wt. 12,000 g/mol. [on SciFinder (R)]
