Merits and drawbacks of known C-C linking procedures, such as condensation, addn., and isomerization reactions, are outlined. Two novel methods are discussed in more detail: the Cu-catalyzed alkylation of Grignard reagents, and reactions with allylpotassium compd. Both the methods efficiently give satd., usatd., and functionally substituted hydrocarbons; the methods provide regio- and stereoselective control of olefin synthesis.
