The Laboratory of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPSL) at EPFL, part of the Institute of Physics, applies physics and chemistry techniques to study Earth and planetary materials. Research areas include clathrate hydrates, mantle materials, planetary ices, Earth's core composition, remote sensing of planetary bodies, shock processes in meteorites, and plate tectonics. EPSL is involved in the SOLVE project, a space mission for hyperspectral remote sensing observations of Earth to monitor environmental changes. The mission aims to provide real-time information for emergency responses and commercial applications like precision farming, funded by the Swiss Space Office.
