Olivier Martin

Olivier J.F. Martin a obtenu le diplôme (M.Sc.) et le doctorat en physique de l'Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) en 1989, respectivement 1994. En 1989 il a rejoint le laboratoire de recherche d'IBM à Rüschlikon près de Zurich, où il a étudié les propriétés optiques et thermiques des lasers semiconducteur. Entre 1994 et 1997 il était collaborateur scientifique de l'Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Zurich (ETHZ). En 1997 il a reçu une bourse Profil du Fonds National Suisse de la Recherche Scientifique (FNSRS) lui permettant de mettre sur pied un groupe de recherche indépendant. Entre 1996 et 1999, Olivier Martin a passé plus d'une année et demi aux U.S.A. comme collaborateur invité de l'Université de Californie à San Diego. En 2001 il a reçu une bourse de professeur assistant du FNSRS et devint professeur de Nano-optique à l'ETHZ. En 2003 il a été nommé professeur de nanophotonique et de traitement optique du signal à l'EPFL où il dirige actuellement le laboratoire de Nanophotonique & Métrologie.

Research InterestsSubsurface hydrology, constructed wetlands, ecological engineering, in particular contaminant transport and remediation of soil and groundwater; more generally, models of hydrological and vadose zone processes; application of mathematical methods to hydrological processes; coastal zone sediment transport, aquifer-coastal ocean interactions; hydrodynamics and modelling of lakes.

Duncan Thomas Lindsay Alexander

Duncan Alexander graduated with a PhD in Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge in 2003 for a thesis on the kinetics of metallurgical phase transformations under the direction of Lindsay Greer. From 2003 to 2007 he held a Royal Society Overseas Research Fellowship at the University of Sydney, and then post-doctoral positions at the University of Cambridge and Arizona State University, working first on materials electrochemistry with Carsten Schwandt and Derek Fray, and then the characterization of atmospheric aerosol particles with Peter Crozier and Jim Anderson. In 2007 he came to EPFL as a scientific collaborator in the group of László Forró, and from 2008 to 2017 he was a staff scientist at EPFL’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Electron Microscopy (CIME), specializing in the application of advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques and enabling electron microscopy research activities for groups across EPFL through teaching, training and support. In 2018 he joined the Electron Spectrometry and Microscopy Laboratory (LSME) as a full-time research scientist dedicated to advancing transmission electron microscopy techniques, and was promoted to the status of Research and Teaching Associate. Vassily Hatzimanikatis

Dr. Vassily Hatzimanikatis is currently Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), in Lausanne, Switzerland. Vassily received a PhD and an MS in Chemical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, and his Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the University of Patras, in Greece. After the completion of his doctoral studies, he held a research group leader position at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ), Switzerland. Prior to joining EPFL, Vassily worked for three years in DuPont, Cargill, and Cargill Dow, and he has been assistant professor at Northwestern University, at Illinois, USA. Vassilys research interests are in the areas of computational systems biology, biotechnology, and complexity. He is associate editor of the journals Biotechnology & Bioengineering, Metabolic Engineering and Integrative Biology, and he serves on the editorial advisory board of the journals Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering, Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology, and Industrial Biotechnology. He has written over 70 technical publications and he is co-inventor in three patents and patent applications. Vassily is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (2010), he was a DuPont Young Professor (2001-2004), and he has also received the Jay Bailey Young Investigator Award in Metabolic Engineering (2000), and the ACS Elmar Gaden Award (2011).
