Mohammad Khaja NazeeruddinDr. Md. K. Nazeeruddin received M.Sc. and Ph. D. in inorganic chemistry from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India. He joined as a Lecturer in Deccan College of Engineering and Technology, Osmania University in 1986, and subsequently, moved to Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute, Bhavnagar, as a Research Associate. He was awarded the Government of Indias fellowship in 1987 for study abroad. After one year postdoctoral stay with Prof. Graetzel at Swiss federal institute of technology Lausanne (E P F L), he joined the same institute as a Senior Scientist. His current research focuses on Dye-sensitized solar cells, Hydrogen production, Light-emitting diodes and Chemical sensors. He has published more than 380 peer-reviewed papers, ten book chapters, and inventor of 40 patents. The high impact of his work has been recognized with invitations to speak at over 80 international conferences, including the MRS Fall (USA, 2006) and Spring 2011 Meetings, GORDON conference (2014), and has been nominated to the OLLA International Scientific Advisory Board. He appeared in the ISI listing of most cited chemists, and has more than 33'500 citations with an h-index of 89. He is teaching "Functional Materials" course at EPFL, and Korea University; directing, and managing several industrial, national, and European Union projects on Hydrogen energy, Photovoltaics (DSC), and Organic Light Emitting Diodes. Alexandre Massoud AlahiAlexandre Alahi is currently an Assistant Professor at EPFL. He spent five years at Stanford University as a Post-doc and Research Scientist after obtaining his Ph.D. from EPFL. His research enables machines to perceive the world and make decisions in the context of transportation problems and smart environments. He has worked on the theoretical challenges and practical applications of socially-aware Artificial Intelligence, i.e., systems equipped with perception and social intelligence. He was awarded the Swiss NSF early and advanced researcher grants for his work on predicting human social behavior. He won the CVPR Open Source Award (2012) for his work on Retina-inspired image descriptors, and the ICDSC Challenge Prize (2009) for his sparsity-driven algorithm that has tracked more than 100 million pedestrians to date. His research has been covered internationally by BBC, abc, PBS, Euronews, Wall street journal, and other national news outlets around the world. Alexandre has also co-founded multiple startups such as Visiosafe, and won several startup competitions. He was elected as one of the Top 20 Swiss Venture leaders in 2010.
Ursula RöthlisbergerU. Röthlisberger was born in Solothurn (Switzerland). In 1988 she made her diploma in Physical Chemistry in the group of Prof. Ernst Schumacher at the University of Berne (Switzerland). Her Ph.D. thesis was done in collaboration with Dr. Wanda Andreoni at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory in Rüschlikon. After finishing her Ph.D in 1991 she spent some time as a postdoctoral research assistant at the IBM Research Lab. From 1992-1995 she was a postdoctoral research assistant in the group of Prof. Michael L. Klein at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (USA). In 1994 she was awarded an advanced researcher fellowship (Profil 2) from the Swiss National Science Foundation. Before starting her Profile 2-fellowship she spent another year as postdoctoral research assistant in the group of Prof. Michele Parrinello at the Max-Planck-Institute for Solid State Physics in Stuttgart, Germany. In 1996 she moved as Profile 2-fellow to the ETH in Zurich, hosted by the group of Prof. Wilfred F. van Gunsteren. In 1997 she became Assistant Professor of Computer-Aided Inorganic Chemistry at the ETH Zurich.
Oleg YazyevProf. Oleg Yazyev (Олег Язев) was born in Simferopol, Crimean peninsula. He obtained his degree in chemistry from Moscow State University in 2003. He then joined Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) completing his PhD thesis in chemistry and chemical engineering in 2007. Next two years he has spent as a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Theoretical Physics (ITP) and the Institute for Numerical Research in the Physics of Materials (IRRMA) of the same institution. In 2009-2011 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Physics of the University of California, Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In September 2011 he started an independent research group supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation professorship grant. In 2012 he was awarded an ERC Starting grant. His current research focuses on theoretical and computational physics of the recently discovered Dirac fermion materials with strong emphasis on their prospective technological applications. Farzan JazaeriFarzan Jazaeri received his M.Sc. degree in 2009 from University of Tehran and his Ph.D. in electronic engineering from EPFL in 2015. He has been serving as Research Scientist at EPFL since 2015 and Senior RD Semiconductor Device Engineer in the Swatch Company since 2019.He is a recipient of the 2018 Electron Devices Society George E. Smith Award, the best talk award from MIXDES 2019 and the best paper awards from ESSDERC2018 and ESSDERC2019, and several other academic awards. He is also awarded an advanced Swiss National Science Foundation grant for two years fellowship in MIT and NASA. His doctoral thesis was recognized to be eligible for the IBM award in 2017. Dr. Jazaeri is currently research scientist and project leader in high level of international scientific collaborative activities at EPFL. His research activities on solid-state physics are focused on creation of the cryogenic temperature infrastructure necessary to operate the qubits for quantum computations(MOSQUITO), radiation-induced damages in advanced devices for the future high energy physics experiments at CERN (GigaRadMOST), Pinned Photodiodes for CIS, and modeling and characterization AlGaN-GaN heterostructure in collaboration with IMEC. Together with Dr. Sallese, he is the lead developer of EPFL HEMT MODEL for GaN HEMTs. He fully developed a new model (EPFL-JL Model) for the so-called nanowire FETs and was invited by Cambridge University Press to write a book on junctionless nanowire FETs, emerging nanoelectronic devices, already published since 2018. He serves as lead editor and reviewer for several scientific journals. He has been an invited keynote speaker at several international conferences and events. He is invited to MIXDES 2019 as a keynote speaker to address quantum bits and quantum computing architecture.From Jun 2009 to February 2010, he worked on designing and implementing SD/HD broadcast systems with SAMIM-RAYANEH Co., Tehran, Iran. Between March 2010 and November 2011 he worked as a SCADA expert in Tehran Regional Electric Co. (TREC), Tehran, Iran. From September 2010 to December 2011, he continued his research activities in nano-electronics in Tehran, Iran. In December 2011, he joined to Electron Device Modelling and Technology Lab (EDLab) and pursued his Ph.D. degree at EPFL. In 2015, he received his Ph.D. from Microsystems and Microelectronics department, Integrated Systems Laboratory (STI/IC) at EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland.
