Abhira dynastyThe Abhira dynasty was a dynasty that ruled over the western Deccan, where they perhaps succeeded the Buddhist Satavahana dynasty. From 203 CE to roughly 270, or possibly 370, they formed a vast kingdom. They belonged to the ancient Abhira tribe. The Purana texts associate the Abhira tribe with Saurashtra and Avanti regions. According to Balkrishna Gokhale, they "have been well-known since epic times as a martial tribe". The Mahabharata describes them as living near the seashore and on the bank of the Sarasvati River, near Somnath in Gujarat.

It has a population of 2,271,686 based on the 2011 census.

In 2022 reorganisation of Andhra Pradesh districts, the district boundary is largely restricted to Kadapa parliamentary constituency area. It is also one of the eight districts in the Rayalaseema region. Kadapa is the administrative headquarters for this district. Barytes, Lime Stone, Asbestos and Uranium are major mineral resources of the district.
KharavelaKharavela (ଖାରବେଳ) fut le souverain d'un immense empire de l'est et du sud de l'Inde. Il est connu par une inscription dans la grotte de l'éléphant (inscription Hathigumpha) au Kalinga (Nord-est de l'Inde). Il y est dit fils de Vudharaja et petit-fils de Khemaraja de la dynastie Chedi (ou Cheta) inconnus par ailleurs. Il aurait, d'après cette inscription, battu le roi Pushyamitra Shunga (vers -175) vainqueur des Maurya, ainsi que le roi bactrien Démétrios (vers -175).
VallabhiVallabhi (or Valabhi or Valabhipur, modern Vala;) is an ancient city located in the Saurashtra peninsula of Gujarat, near Bhavnagar in western India. It is also known as Vallabhipura and was the capital of the Suryavanshi Maitraka Dynasty. Vallabhi was occupied as early as the Harappan period, and was later part of the Maurya Empire from about 322 BCE until 185 BCE. The Satavahana dynasty ruled the area, off and on, from the late second century BCE until the early third century CE.
Mahameghavahana dynastyThe Mahameghavahana dynasty (, 2nd or 1st century BC to early 4th century CE) was an ancient ruling dynasty of Kalinga after the decline of the Maurya Empire. In the first century B.C., Mahameghavahana, a king of Chedirastra (or Cetarattha, i.e., kingdom of the Chedis) conquered Kalinga and Kosala. During the reign of Kharavela, the third king of Mahameghavahana dynasty, South Kosala became an integral part of the kingdom. He patronised Jainism, but did not discriminate against other religions.

Inscription HathigumphaL'inscription Hathigumpha (la « grotte de l'éléphant ») de Udayagiri, près de Bhubaneshwar, dans l'Orissa, fut gravée sur les ordres de Kharavela, le souverain de l'empira Kalinga, en Inde, au . L'inscription Hathigumpha se compose de dix-sept lignes profondément gravées en caractères Brahmi sur le surplomb d'une caverne naturelle appelée Hathigumpha sur le flanc sud des collines de Udayagiri près de Bhubaneshwar. Elle fait directement face à la roche des édits d'Ashoka à Dhauli, située à une distance d'environ 10 kilomètres.
