Nerve conduction study

A nerve conduction study (NCS) is a medical diagnostic test commonly used to evaluate the function, especially the ability of electrical conduction, of the motor and sensory nerves of the human body. These tests may be performed by medical specialists such as clinical neurophysiologists, physical therapists, chiropractors, physiatrists (physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians), and neurologists who subspecialize in electrodiagnostic medicine. In the United States, neurologists and physiatrists receive training in electrodiagnostic medicine (performing needle electromyography (EMG) and NCSs) as part of residency training and in some cases acquire additional expertise during a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology, electrodiagnostic medicine, or neuromuscular medicine. Monitoring the Cellular Cholesterol Distribution via nanoSIMS Imaging

Cholesterol is a very important lipid, manufactured by all animal cells for their use. About 20-25% of total daily cholesterol production occurs in the liver; other sites that have higher synthesis rate are intestine, adrenal glands and reproductive organs. It is not only produced in the body cells but also it can be obtained from dietary sources as well. Presence of cholesterol is very crucial for animal cells, since it is the building block of cellular membranes provide membrane fluidity over the range of physiological temperatures; within the cell membrane, it also functions to regulate intracellular transport, cell signaling and nerve conduction. Moreover, it is a precursor for synthesis vitamin D and and steroid hormones. Cholesterol is such an important biological molecule for animal cells, yet it has been a real challenge so far, to understand distribution of cholesterol within the biological membranes. In our study, via using 13C labeled cholesterol, we are able to monitor incorporated cholesterol in cellular structures, with the help of combination of Electron Microscopy imaging and nanoSIMS imaging. Our aim in this study is to address a really fundamental question, what is the distribution gradient of cholesterol, through different layers of cellular membranes.

Monitoring the Cellular Cholesterol Distribution via NanoSIMS Imaging

Cholesterol is a very crucial lipid for animal cells, since it is the building block of cellular membranes, control fluidity of membranes, regulate intracellular transport, cell signalling, nerve conduction and serve as a precursor for synthesis of vitamin D and steroid hormones. Cholesterol is such an important biological molecule for animal cells, yet it has been a real challenge so far, to understand distribution of cholesterol within the biological membranes. In our study, using ultra-high resolution ion microprobe (NanoSIMS) imaging enables us to detect incorporated cholesterol in cells, introduced as 13C labeled cholesterol, in nanometer scale. Then, we are able to monitor the localization of detected cholesterol in cellular structures by combining NanoSIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) with electron microscopy. Our aim in this study is to determine level of incorporated cholesterol in cellular membranes, secretion and endocytic systems, by the help of NanoSIMS imaging combined with electron microscopy.

The corpus callosum (CC) provides the main route of communication between the 2 hemispheres of the brain. In monkeys, chimpanzees, and humans, callosal axons of distinct size interconnect functionally different cortical areas. Thinner axons in the genu and in the posterior body of the CC interconnect the prefrontal and parietal areas, respectively, and thicker axons in the midbody and in the splenium interconnect primary motor, somatosensory, and visual areas. At all locations, axon diameter, and hence its conduction velocity, increases slightly in the chimpanzee compared with the macaque because of an increased number of large axons but not between the chimpanzee and man. This, together with the longer connections in larger brains, doubles the expected conduction delays between the hemispheres, from macaque to man, and amplifies their range about 3-fold. These changes can have several consequences for cortical dynamics, particularly on the cycle of interhemispheric oscillators.
