Degrees of the University of Oxford
The system of academic degrees at the University of Oxford can be confusing to those not familiar with it. This is not merely because many degree titles date from the Middle Ages, but also because many changes have been haphazardly introduced in recent years. For example, the (medieval) BD, BM, BCL, etc. are postgraduate degrees, while the (modern) MPhys, MEng, etc. are integrated master's degrees, requiring three years of undergraduate study before the postgraduate year. In postnominals, "University of Oxford" is normally abbreviated "Oxon.
Master of Engineering
A Master of Engineering (abbreviated MEng, ME, M.E. or M.Eng.) is a professional master's degree in the field of engineering. In Australia, the Master of Engineering degree is a research degree requiring completion of a thesis. Like the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.), it is considered a lesser degree than Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). It is not to be confused with Master of Engineering Science, Master of Engineering Studies or Master of Professional Engineering which are coursework master's degrees.
Bachelor of Engineering
A Bachelor of Engineering (BE or BEngg) or a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSc (Engg) or BSE) is an undergraduate academic degree awarded to a student after three to five years of studying engineering at an accredited college or university. In the United Kingdom, a Bachelor of Engineering degree will be accredited by one of the Engineering Council's professional engineering institutions as suitable for registration as an incorporated engineer or chartered engineer with further study to masters level.
Doctor of Medicine
Doctor of Medicine (abbreviated M.D., from the Latin Medicinae Doctor) is a medical degree, the meaning of which varies between different jurisdictions. In the United States, and some other countries, the M.D. denotes a professional degree. This generally arose because many in 18th-century medical professions trained in Scotland, which used the M.D. degree nomenclature. In England, however, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery was used and eventually in the 19th century became the standard in Scotland too.
Doctor of Philosophy
A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD, Ph.D., or DPhil; Latin: philosophiae doctor or doctor philosophiae) is the most common degree at the highest academic level, awarded following a course of study and research. PhDs are awarded for programs across the whole breadth of academic fields. Because it is an earned research degree, those studying for a PhD are required to produce original research that expands the boundaries of knowledge, normally in the form of a dissertation, and defend their work before a panel of other experts in the field.
Master of Business Administration
Le Master of Business Administration (MBA) est un diplôme d'études supérieures dans le domaine du marketing, finances, ressources humaines et management. Un diplôme en France porte le même nom. Toutefois, il s'inscrit dans un format totalement différent et ne doit pas être confondu avec cet homologue anglo-saxon. Ce grade universitaire est obtenu en un à deux ans après l’obtention d’un premier grade. Le MBA a été créé aux États-Unis dans les écoles d'administration sous l'intitulé anglais de master's degree in business administration, devenu Master of business administration, en abrégé MBA.
Grade universitaire
Un grade universitaire est un degré dans la hiérarchie des études supérieures. Il est attesté par un diplôme délivré par les universités et autres institutions d’études supérieures. Les grades sont conférés aux titulaires de diplômes de l'enseignement supérieur délivrés par les universités et les établissements habilités. Les grades peuvent être également conférés aux titulaires de certains diplômes propres à des établissements. À ces grades peuvent être associés un certain nombre de droits et de privilèges, pouvant varier suivant les disciplines et les finalités.
Master's degree
A master's degree (from Latin magister) is a postgraduate academic degree awarded by universities or colleges upon completion of a course of study demonstrating mastery or a high-order overview of a specific field of study or area of professional practice. A master's degree normally requires previous study at the bachelor's level, either as a separate degree or as part of an integrated course.
