Hormonal therapy (oncology)
Hormonal therapy in oncology is hormone therapy for cancer and is one of the major modalities of medical oncology (pharmacotherapy for cancer), others being cytotoxic chemotherapy and targeted therapy (biotherapeutics). It involves the manipulation of the endocrine system through exogenous or external administration of specific hormones, particularly steroid hormones, or drugs which inhibit the production or activity of such hormones (hormone antagonists).
Estradiol valerate
Estradiol valerate (EV), sold for use by mouth under the brand name Progynova and Primiwal E4 and for use by injection under the brand names Delestrogen and Progynon Depot among others, is an estrogen medication. It is used in hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms and low estrogen levels, hormone therapy for transgender people, and in hormonal birth control. It is also used in the treatment of prostate cancer. The medication is taken by mouth or by injection into muscle or fat once every 1 to 4 weeks.
Anti-androgène
Les anti-androgènes sont des molécules diminuant l'activité des hormones androgènes. Ils bloquent les récepteurs aux androgènes ou diminuant la synthèse des androgènes. Chez l'homme, ils sont utilisés dans le traitement de certains cancers de la prostate ou lorsqu'on a recours à une castration chimique. Chez la femme, ils sont utilisés dans les situations d'hyperandrogénie ou comme traitement de la transidentité par thérapie de remplacement d'hormone et dans certains cas pour traiter l'acné et l'hirsutisme.
