Cataract surgery
Cataract surgery, which is also called lens replacement surgery, is the removal of the natural lens (also called the "crystalline lens") of the human eye that has developed a cataract, an opaque or cloudy area. The eye's natural lens is usually replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Over time, metabolic changes of the crystalline lens fibres lead to the development of a cataract, causing impairment or loss of vision. Some infants are born with congenital cataracts, and environmental factors may lead to cataract formation.
Slit lamp
In ophthalmology and optometry, a slit lamp is an instrument consisting of a high-intensity light source that can be focused to shine a thin sheet of light into the eye. It is used in conjunction with a biomicroscope. The lamp facilitates an examination of the anterior segment and posterior segment of the human eye, which includes the eyelid, sclera, conjunctiva, iris, natural crystalline lens, and cornea. The binocular slit-lamp examination provides a stereoscopic magnified view of the eye structures in detail, enabling anatomical diagnoses to be made for a variety of eye conditions.
Intraocular lens
An Intraocular lens (IOL) is a lens implanted in the eye usually as part of a treatment for cataracts or for correcting other vision problems such as short sightedness and long sightedness, a form of refractive surgery. If the natural lens is left in the eye, the IOL is known as phakic, otherwise it is a pseudophakic lens (or false lens). Both kinds of IOLs are designed to provide the same light-focusing function as the natural crystalline lens. This can be an alternative to LASIK, but LASIK is not an alternative to an IOL for treatment of cataracts.
Cataracte (maladie)
La cataracte est l'opacification partielle ou totale du cristallin, lentille convergente située à l'intérieur de l'œil. Cette opacification est responsable d'une baisse progressive de la vue, au début accompagnée de gêne à la lumière (photophobie). Cette baisse de la vision peut être rapide (quelques semaines) si elle est causée par un traumatisme. Le terme cataracte (maladie) a la même étymologie que cataracte (chute d'eau).
Ophtalmologie
L’ophtalmologie est la branche de la médecine chargée du traitement des maladies de l’œil et de ses annexes. C’est une spécialité médico-chirurgicale. Le médecin spécialisé pratiquant l'ophtalmologie est appelé « ophtalmologiste » ou « ophtalmologue ». Comme chez la plupart des mammifères, oiseaux, reptiles et poissons, l’œil humain est constitué d’un globe oculaire, formé de 3 enveloppes : la sclèro-cornée, l’uvée, et la rétine (de dehors en dedans).
