DictaphoneUn Dictaphone autrement dit machine à dicter a pour fonction d'enregistrer la voix d'une personne dans le but d'être retranscrite par écrit. Dictaphone est une marque déposée par Columbia Graphophone Company en 1907 pour un appareil enregistreur de dictée. La marque est aujourd'hui revendiquée par la compagnie américaine Nuance Communications mais attribuée suivant l'INPI à la société américaine Dictaphone Corporation. La marque est devenue, par antonomase, un synonyme de « machine à dicter ».

MagnétophoneUn magnétophone est un appareil permettant d'enregistrer des sons sur une bande magnétique qui peut être enroulée dans une bobine ou une cassette. Le nom Magnetophon était originellement une marque déposée par AEG (Telefunken) et IG Farben et désignait les seuls « enregistreurs à ruban ». Ce terme est passé dans le langage courant, devenant une sorte de nom commun. Le principe est de polariser grâce à un électroaimant (tête magnétique), les particules métalliques magnétiques d'un support souple en ruban, défilant à vitesse constante sur la tête.

La cassette audio, Compact Cassette selon sa désignation officielle, appelée encore minicassette ou musicassette est un support d'enregistrement magnétique inventé par Lou Ottens, breveté et mis sur le marché en 1963 par Philips après plusieurs années de recherche et de développement. Elle contient deux bobines autour desquelles s'enroule une bande magnétique. Elle permet d'enregistrer et d'écouter de la musique ou tout autre type de son.
