Yves Perriard

Yves Perriard was born in Lausanne in 1965. He received the M. Sc. in Microengineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - Lausanne (EPFL) in 1989 and the Ph D. degree in 1992. Co-founder of Micro-Beam SA, he was CEO of this company involved in high precision electric drive. Senior lecturer from 1998 and professor since 2003, he is currently director of Laboratory of Integrated Actuators. His research interests are in the field of new actuator design and associated electronic devices. In 2009, he is appointed Vice-Director of the Microengineering Institute in Neuchâtel until 2011. In 2013 the Federal Council has named him the the CTI commission in Bern. In 2014 he is appointed guest professor at Zhejiang University in China. In 2017, the lab is granted by the Werner Siemens Foundation of an amount of 12 millions CHF in order to set up a new Center for Artificial Muscules. This paper presents an innovative approach to creating Shape Memory Alloys (SMA)-based actuators that are lightweight, compact, and capable of providing large strokes. Inspired by the Kirigami structure, an SMA actuator is designed using the Ω -pattern, which utilizes out-of-plane flexion to produce a flexible metamaterial. The study focuses on providing a unique method for fabricating these actuators utilizing different cutting methods and 3D printing. The stability behavior of the SMA-based Kirigami pattern is analyzed, and two cutting strategies and their effects are discussed. The paper concludes with the successful validation of the proposed design technique through the creation of a lightweight linear actuator using the SMA active element inspired by Kirigami and a biasing element based on a flexure design. This study offers valuable insights into the development of SMA-based actuators and their potential to address the pressing need for high-stroke and high-force output in a wide range of fields, from medical devices to industrial automation, and from aerospace to robotics.

Highly Efficient Miniaturized Magnetorheological Valves Using Electropermanent Magnets

Fluidic systems enable actuation in various applications, such as automotive, medical, and industrial robotics. Miniaturized valves constitute a fundamental controlling element of modern fluidic systems, intriguing the interest of many researchers. This letter presents the design, implementation, and experimental validation of a miniaturized magnetorheological valve. The valve is highly efficient due to its capability of sustaining high loadswith low energy consumption. This work includes the estimation strategy for the sustained load. Magnetorheological fluid is used both as an actuation fluid and as control medium. The inner iron core of the traditional magnetorheological valve is replaced with an AlNiCo-5 rod. The latter provides the possibility of magnetic energy storage, without continuous power supply. This changes the actuationmechanism from an electromagnet to an electropermanent magnet. The valve’s capability to sustain pressure up to 1010 kPa, for a volume of 353 mm3, is demonstrated experimentally. The fluid flow rate when the valve is open is 459 mm3/s for a pressure difference of 993 kPa. The corresponding power consumption is negligible in steady-state condition, while consuming 15.3 mJ when activated and 6 mJ when deactivated. The experimental results also validate the possible tunability of the pressure sustaining capability of the valve.

Intelligent plantar pressure offloading for the prevention of diabetic foot ulcers and amputations

The high prevalence of lower extremity ulceration and amputation in people with diabetes is strongly linked to difficulties in achieving and maintaining a reduction of high plantar pressures (PPs) which remains an important risk factor. The effectiveness of current offloading footwear is opposed in part by poor patient adherence to these interventions which have an impact on everyday living activities of patients. Moreover, the offloading devices currently available utilize primarily passive techniques, whereas PP distribution is a dynamically changing process with frequent shifts of high PP areas under different areas of the foot. Thus, there is a need for pressure offloading footwear capable of regularly and autonomously adapting to PPs of people with diabetes. The aim of this article is to summarize the concepts of intelligent pressure offloading footwear under development which will regulate PPs in people with diabetes to prevent and treat diabetic foot ulcers. Our team is creating this intelligent footwear with an auto-contouring insole which will continuously read PPs and adapt its shape in the forefoot and heel regions to redistribute high PP areas. The PP-redistribution process is to be performed consistently while the footwear is being worn. To improve adherence, the footwear is designed to resemble a conventional shoe worn by patients in everyday life. Preliminary pressure offloading and user perceptions assessments in people without and with diabetes, respectively, exhibit encouraging results for the future directions of the footwear. Overall, this intelligent footwear is designed to prevent and treat diabetic foot ulcers while enhancing patient usability for the ultimate prevention of lower limb amputations.
