Bilayer grapheneBilayer graphene is a material consisting of two layers of graphene. One of the first reports of bilayer graphene was in the seminal 2004 Science paper by Geim and colleagues, in which they described devices "which contained just one, two, or three atomic layers" Bilayer graphene can exist in the AB, or Bernal-stacked form, where half of the atoms lie directly over the center of a hexagon in the lower graphene sheet, and half of the atoms lie over an atom, or, less commonly, in the AA form, in which the layers are exactly aligned.
Potential applications of graphenePotential graphene applications include lightweight, thin, and flexible electric/photonics circuits, solar cells, and various medical, chemical and industrial processes enhanced or enabled by the use of new graphene materials. In 2008, graphene produced by exfoliation was one of the most expensive materials on Earth, with a sample the area of a cross section of a human hair costing more than 1,000asofApril2008(about100,000,000/cm2). Since then, exfoliation procedures have been scaled up, and now companies sell graphene in large quantities. Dopage (semi-conducteur)Dans le domaine des semi-conducteurs, le dopage est l'action d'ajouter des impuretés en petites quantités à une substance pure afin de modifier ses propriétés de conductivité. Les propriétés des semi-conducteurs sont en grande partie régies par la quantité de porteurs de charge qu'ils contiennent. Ces porteurs sont les électrons ou les trous. Le dopage d'un matériau consiste à introduire, dans sa matrice, des atomes d'un autre matériau. Ces atomes vont se substituer à certains atomes initiaux et ainsi introduire davantage d'électrons ou de trous.
Graphene nanoribbonGraphene nanoribbons (GNRs, also called nano-graphene ribbons or nano-graphite ribbons) are strips of graphene with width less than 100 nm. Graphene ribbons were introduced as a theoretical model by Mitsutaka Fujita and coauthors to examine the edge and nanoscale size effect in graphene. Large quantities of width-controlled GNRs can be produced via graphite nanotomy, where applying a sharp diamond knife on graphite produces graphite nanoblocks, which can then be exfoliated to produce GNRs as shown by Vikas Berry.

Le microscope à effet tunnel (en anglais, scanning tunneling microscope, STM) est inventé en 1981 par des chercheurs d'IBM, Gerd Binnig et Heinrich Rohrer, qui reçurent le prix Nobel de physique pour cette invention en 1986. C'est un microscope en champ proche qui utilise un phénomène quantique, l'effet tunnel, pour déterminer la morphologie et la densité d'états électroniques de surfaces conductrices ou semi-conductrices avec une résolution spatiale pouvant être égale ou inférieure à la taille des atomes.
Microscopie à sonde localeLa microscopie à sonde locale (MSL) ou microscopie en champ proche (MCP) ou scanning probe microscopy (SPM) en anglais est une technique de microscopie permettant de cartographier le relief (nano-topographie) ou une autre grandeur physique en balayant la surface à imager à l'aide d'une pointe très fine (la pointe est idéalement un cône se terminant par un seul atome). Le pouvoir de résolution obtenu par cette technique permet d'observer jusqu'à des atomes, ce qui est physiquement impossible avec un microscope optique, quel que soit son grossissement.

The term was first introduced by the research group of Efthimios Kaxiras at Harvard University in their theoretical treatment of graphene superlattices.

Oxyde de graphiteL'oxyde de graphite, autrefois appelé oxyde graphitique ou acide graphitique, est un composé inorganique de carbone, oxygène et hydrogène dans des ratios atomiques variables. Il est obtenu en traitant du graphite avec des oxydants forts. Le produit le plus oxydé est le solide jaune avec un ratio C:O entre 2,1 et 2,9 qui conserve la structure en couche du graphite mais avec des espaces intercouches beaucoup plus larges et irréguliers.
