Fiber bragg gratings in polymer optical fibers

Polymer optical fibers (POF) have received increased attention in recent years in the fields of data communication and sensing applications. The lower cost and higher flexibility are the main advantages of POF compared to silica fibers and make them interesting candidates for Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor applications. FBG are convenient measurement devices for strain and temperature measurements, as they can be multiplexed within one fiber yielding a sensor array and the fiber can be embedded in structures. This work investigated the possibility of producing FBG in polymer fibers and their use as sensor units. It could be shown that using excimer laser irradiation at 308 nm, it is possible to write FBG in single-mode POF employing a standard phase mask, side writing technique. Index changes of up to 1.7 × 10-4 and reflectivies of up to 87% could be reached. The induced refractive index change due to pulsed UV irradiation was shown to be negative. The polymer material of the core (Polystyrene (PS) / Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)) was not sensitized prior to irradiation. During the grating formation an irradiation induced insertion loss of up to 11 dB/cm was observed. Excimer laser written FBG showed stability of over 9 months for approximately 40% of written FBG. Results of FBG writing using femto second laser irradiation showed FBG with reflectivities of up to 1.2 × 10-4, however these POFBG were not stable. The POFBG were characterized using optical low coherence reflectometry (OLCR) which enables to calculate the FBG location and length as well as the induced amplitude Δnac and mean refractive index change Δndc. Taking into account fiber and insertion losses, good agreement of these calculations and measurements were found. The results show that large variations of the induced index change result from irradiation. Local index change peaks of up to 4 times the mean value were observed, indicating inhomogeneity of the fiber material. Birefringence in the core of the POF (≈ 1.2 × 10-3) is up to a factor 3 higher than in the cladding which is due to the PS content within the core. The birefringence is due to inelastic strain and stress induced in the drawing process. Annealing, uniform irradiation and FBG writing using 308 nm excimer laser light induces a decrease of the absolute birefringence value. The changes upon irradiation are confined to the core of the fiber. Large variations in the initial and final birefringence before and after irradiation support the findings of the OLCR measurements indicating material inhomogeneities in the fiber. POFBG were found to be sensitive to relative humidity, temperature and strain. This is in contrast to glass fiber FBG which do not show humidity sensitivity. POFBG relative humidity sensitivity is non-linear with a change of up to 8 nm for a RH change of ≈ 100%. The non-linearity is introduced by a non-linear water sorption process. The POF grating response to temperature changes under dry conditions (1.5±1 % RH) is –10±0.5 pm/°C. The temperature response of the FBG submerged in water is –36±2 pm/°C due to an increased thermal expansion coefficient and a change in polarizability. Under ambient conditions the grating response to heating is typically ≈ –138 pm/°C, predominantly due to a change in POF swelling, i.e changes in relative humidity and POF water content. The diffusion coefficient of water in this POF at 23.5°C is 6.7 × 10-9cm2/s for sorption and 10 × 10-9cm2/s for desorption. Equilibrium of water content within the fiber and the surrounding air is typically reached after approximately one hour. Calculation showed that a reduction of the fiber diameter can increase this humidity sensitivity response time down to approximately 5 minutes for a fiber diameter of 25 µm.

Distributed sensing using polarization sensitive optical low-coherence reflectometry and fiber gratings

Optical low coherence reflectometry (OLCR) is non-destructive interferometric technique that allows measuring amplitude and phase of the light reflected from the device under test. OLCR is a powerful tool for the characterization of the various optical devices such as fiber gratings and optical waveguides. This thesis work had explored possibilities to combine the OLCR technique with fiber gratings to perform distributed strain and temperature measurements, and to develop novel sensing techniques as an alternative to classical spectral methods. Special attention is devoted to polarization sensitive measurements and techniques, and OLCR techniques that use only amplitude information, as an alternative to more complicated phase sensitive measurements. Using a polarization sensitive system two methods for the measurement of local birefringence of fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) using OLCR were developed. The first technique uses oscillations in the OLCR amplitude signal to directly obtain the beat length and the birefringence. The second method is based on the measurement of the OLCR phase and inverse scattering algorithm. Both methods were compared with birefringence obtained from spectral measurements, and very good agreement was obtained. The indirect method, based on local Bragg grating determination requires two independent measurements and mathematical reconstruction, but provides a very high spatial resolution of ≈ 25 µm. The grating length limits the minimum measurable birefringence in the direct method, but a good sensitivity of 4×10-6 was obtained, which corresponds to a Bragg wavelength shift of 4 pm. The spatial resolution is in the millimeter range in this case. The novel methods were successfully applied for the distributed measurement of birefringence of FBG under diametric load. New types of tunable devices and sensors – fiber Bragg gratings written in high attenuation fibers (HAF) were developed. Active tuning by heating was achieved by optical pumping of a pure single mode fiber without any mechanical or electrical parts, or deposited light absorption coatings. Tuning can be controlled by the applied pump power, the position of the grating, the HAF attenuation level, and the pumping configuration. The proposed design assures a high repeatability and long lifetime. Using OLCR these devices were successfully applied to measure the liquid level with a spatial resolution of 100 micrometers. Liquid level measurements that use both phase and amplitude, or only amplitude were demonstrated. The same principles could be easily applied to design other fiber grating devices (long-period, tilted etc), and sensors based on hot-wire anemometry, like flow or vacuum sensors.

Coherent Rayleigh time domain reflectometry

Owing to the advantages of the optical fibre, such as lightweight, small size, low cost and immunity to electromagnetic interferences, the fibre sensors have been applied in diverse fields and the scientific research on fibre sensing keeps improving to meet new industrial demands. In this thesis, a novel distributed fibre sensor based on coherent Rayleigh scattering is investigated to realise best accuracy measurements. Coherent Rayleigh scattering is found to be essentially assimilated to a random walk process, thus its statistical properties are theoretically analysed based on the mature theory on random walk. Then the spectral characteristics of the Rayleigh backscattered light is investigated for different incident pulse shapes. The spectral distribution of the trace amplitude turns out to be identical to the spectrum of the incident pulse. Meanwhile, a theoretical model is proposed to describe the coherent Rayleigh trace in time and frequency domains. Experiments are carried out to validate the theoretical analysis and the proposed model. Then the statistical properties and the visibility of the coherent Rayleigh traces obtained by experiment and simulation are investigated for different detection bandwidth. The minimum 3 dB bandwidth required to resolve all features of a coherent Rayleigh intensity trace is determined to be 3 times larger than the bandwidth of the incident rectangular pulse. Then coherent Rayleigh scattering is applied to distributed sensing using the optical time domain reflectometry technique. The working principle is explained by the restorability of the Rayleigh trace in time domain and by a spectral shift in frequency domain. The temperature sensitivity is calculated over a wide range from 300 K down to 4.5 K based on the thermo-optic effect and the thermal expansion of the silica fibre. The experimental results in a standard fibre with acrylate coating and a fibre specially coated with ORMOCER® confirm the high temperature sensitivity (over 1 GHz/K) and demonstrate a temperature resolution in the milliKelvin range even under cryogenic conditions. The fibre with the ORMOCER® coating exhibits a higher temperature sensitivity at room temperature than the acrylate coated fibre due to the extra strain induced by the temperate change in the coating and a more stable sensing behaviour because the polymers forming the coating stabilise the mechanical and thermal responses of the fibre. The sensors based on coherent Rayleigh scattering are also applied to retrieve the phase birefringence distribution along polarisation-maintaining and standard single mode fibres. The minimum detectable birefringence reaches 3×10¿7 when the spatial resolution is 2 m and even smaller value can be resolved using longer optical pulses. In addition, this birefringence measurement is capable of distributed temperature and strain sensing in a PANDA and an elliptical-core polarisation-maintaining fibres since the birefringence is sensitive to environmental variations. The experimental results demonstrate that this method is one order of magnitude more sensitive than a fibre sensor based on Brillouin scattering. Moreover, discriminated temperature and strain sensing is realised by a combination of this birefringence measurement and a standard COTDR sensor. This thesis is concluded by a discussion of further research directions on coherent Rayleigh scattering based distributed sensing.

Laser-induced stress changes in optical fibers

The precise determination of residual stress profiles in optical fibers allows drawing conclusions about radiation-induced density-changes of the fibers doped core glass. The corresponding index changes partially contribute to the phenomenon of photosensitivity, i.e. the modification of the refractive index of a glass through the irradiation with an appropriate laser source. Photosensitivity is widely exploited for the fabrication of fiber Bragg gratings which are in-fiber filter devices whose spectral response can be designed with great versatility. Fiber Bragg gratings find broad application nowadays in the field of telecommunication as well as in sensing applications. The polarimetric assessment of the integrated transverse fiber birefringence serves as a means to gather information about both stress and strain profiles of the fiber. Birefringence is introduced in the optical fiber due to the photo-elastic effect. In this work, a highly sensitive polariscope with sub-micron resolution has been developed. The captured birefringence data has been interpreted to be basically strain and not stress-induced, which allowed the proper discrimination between an inelastic, stress-free strain contribution and a strain part essentially accompanied by elastic stress. In earlier interpretations of the polarimetric data, all birefringence had been attributed to be purely stress-induced, which excluded the existence of inelastic strain and even led to contradictory results in some cases. The reinterpretation in terms of strain, however, results in a consistent picture of both stress and strain-induced birefringence. The polariscope has been used in the following to determine radiation-induced stress changes for different optical fibers and irradiation sources. Femtosecond-laser induced core stress changes in SMF-28® standard telecommunication fibers have been measured tomographically and correlated with corresponding index changes. Furthermore, stress has been correlated to the refractive index change in highly germanium-doped fibers irradiated with cw-irradiation at 244 nm. The annealing behavior of stress, strain and index in this fiber has been studied. Approximately the same linear correlation between stress and index change was found for all germanium-doped fibers under investigation. In addition, stress changes were measured for phosphorus- and nitrogen-doped fibers drawn at different tensions before and after irradiation with an ArF excimer-laser. The impact of the drawing force on fiber stress and inelastic strain anisotropy has been determined as well as radiation-induced stress modifications. The observed stress increase has been compared to those obtained for germanium-doped fibers. Atomic Force Microscopy of cleaved and subsequently etched fiber end-faces is a powerful means to gather topographic information on a nanometer scale due to differential etching of the doped core and the undoped silica cladding. Within this work, the technique has been used to acquire information about etch rate changes in fibers drawn from the same nitrogen-doped preform with different drawing conditions. Furthermore, the impact of UV-irradiation on the etch rate has been determined for phosphorus- as well as nitrogen-doped fibers. Comparison of the results, with stress measurements allowed the attribution of the etch rate changes to a modification of the color center population.
