Behaviour of central plasma relaxation oscillations during localized electron cyclotron heating on the TCV tokamak

During initial studies of ECRH in the TCV tokamak, non-standard central MHD activities, such as humpbacks and saturated and inverted sawteeth, have been observed while changing the heating location, the ECRH power, the plasma shape and the safety factor. For edge safety factors q(alpha) > 4.5, safety factors on-axis q(0) < 1 and small plasmas, complete sawtooth stabilization was achieved with the present 1 MW gyrotron power, and it is likely that sawtooth stabilization can be achieved for all conditions at. higher ECRH power. The conditions under which the various relaxation activities are produced or suppressed are reported, and the origins for such tron-standard behaviour are discussed.

Physics Insight from Plasma Shaping of TCV Tokamak Plasmas - focus on Electron Heat Transport

In the search of a fusion reactor using magnetic confinement of toroidal plasmas, many important plasma performance parameters directly depend on the shape of the plasma cross-section. The unique shaping capability of the TCV tokamak ("Tokamak à Configuration Variable") has been exploited to study different aspects of tokamak transport and stability, in which the plasma shape may play a role. This presentation will focus on the effects of plasma shape on transport. The TCV tokamak has produced a host of physics results on diverse topics such as core sawtooth instabilities, edge localised modes (ELMs), electron cyclotron heating (ECH) and current drive (CD), plasma control, MHD stability, internal transport barriers (ITB), innovative “snowflake” divertors. TCV can produce plasmas with extreme shapes, elongation κ up to 2.8 and both negative and positive triangularity δ from –0.8 to +1, and is equipped with 4.5MW of localized Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH). A significant fraction of TCV results has benefited from plasma shaping. The characterization of the various effects of shaping serves essentially two purposes: 1) it provides stringent tests for theory, being thus a valuable tool for model validation, and 2) it is crucial for the design of a fusion reactor, since plasma shape has a marked influence on confinement, MHD stability and performance. As an example, confinement in TCV has been demonstrated to depend strongly on triangularity in low-collisionality L-mode plasmas, improving towards negative triangularity. For illustration, the heat flux necessary to sustain the same profiles and stored energy in a discharge with δ=-0.4 is only half of that required for a discharge with δ=+0.4. The observed dependences of the electron thermal diffusivity on triangularity (direct) and collisionality (inverse) are qualitatively reproduced by nonlinear gyro-kinetic simulations and shown to be governed by Trapped Electron Mode (TEM) turbulence. Both in the linear and non-linear phases, negative triangularity is found to have a stabilizing influence on the TEM by modifying the toroidal precessional drift of trapped electrons that resonantly drive the modes. Negative triangularity also enhances the local shear, which in turn increases the perpendicular wave number, thus reducing the mixing length transport estimate. Both heat transport measurements and gyro-kinetic simulations demonstrate the stabilising effect of electron-ion collisions, which is now further sustained by recent electron temperature turbulence measurements using correlation-ECE.

Extremely Shaped Plasmas to Improve the Tokamak Concept

Energy is essential for human existence and our future depends on plentiful and accessible sources of energy. The world population is fast growing and the average energy used per capita increases. One of the greatest challenges for human beings is that of meeting the growing demand for energy in a responsible, equitable and sustainable way. The possibility to obtain energy by "fusing" light atoms addresses these needs. Nuclear fusion reactions are clean, safe and the amount of fuel present on Earth (hydrogen isotopes) is practically inexhaustible and well distributed. Nuclear fusion is a natural process that occurs in all active stars like our Sun. Since the first demonstration of a deuterium fusion reaction (Rutherford 1933), researchers worldwide have tried to replicate this process on Earth by building a thermonuclear fusion reactor. Nevertheless, the challenge posed by the construction of a nuclear fusion reactor is greater than the one presented earlier by the development of a fission reactor. During the IAEA Conference in Geneva in the early 1958, L.A.Artsimovich declared: "Plasma physics is very difficult. Worldwide collaboration is needed for progress" and E.Teller, at the same conference: "Fusion technology is very complex. It is almost impossible to build a fusion reactor in this century". They were right. The extremely high temperature and density necessary to fuse hydrogen isotopes makes it difficult indeed to create a successful fusion reactor. Even though the physics of the fusion reaction appears clear, we are still facing problems on the road towards bulding the "box" that can efficiently confine the hot gas in the state of plasma. The best results so far have been obtained confining a plasma with strong magnetic fields in a toroidal configuration ("tokamak"). The Centre de Recherches en Physique des Plasmas in Switzerland actively studies this promising configuration towards the development of a nuclear fusion reactor. The experimental activity of the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV) mainly focuses on the research of optimized plasma shapes capable of improving the global performance and solve the technological challenges of a tokamak reactor. Several theoretical and experimental results show the importance of the plasma shape in tokamaks. The maximum value of β (an indicator of the confinement efficiency) is for example related to the ratio between the height and the width of the plasma. The plasma shape can also affect the power necessary to access improved confinement regimes, as well as the plasma stability. This thesis reports on a contribution towards the optimization of the tokamak plasma shape. In particular, it describes the theoretical and experimental studies carried out in the TCV tokamak on two innovative plasma shapes: the doublet shaped plasma and the snowflake divertor. Doublet shaped plasmas have been studied in the past by the General Atomics group. Since then, the development of new plasma diagnostics and the discovery of new confinement regimes have given new reasons for interest in this unusual configuration. TCV is the only tokamak worldwide theoretically able to establish and control this configuration. This thesis illustrates new motivations for creating doublet plasmas. The vertical stability of the configuration is studied using a rigid model and the results are compared with those obtained with the KINX MHD stability code. The best strategy for controlling a doublet on TCV is also investigated, and a possible setup of the TCV control system is suggested for the doublet configuration. Analyzing the possible scenarios for doublet creation, the most promising scenario consists of the creation of two independent plasmas, which are subsequently merged to establish a doublet. For this reason, particular attention needs to be devoted to the problem of the plasma start-up. In this thesis, a general analysis of the TCV ohmic and assisted with ECH plasma start-up is presented, and recent attempts to create a doublet plasma are reported. Since the magnetic field reconstruction at the breakdown time is important to better diagnose these plasmas, the entire magnetic system of TCV has been calibrated with an original technique, also described in the manuscript. The last part of this thesis is devoted to the snowflake divertor configuration. This innovative plasma shape has been proposed and theoretically studied by Dr. D.D.Ryutov from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In Ryutov's articles, this configuration was proposed to alleviate the problems of the plasma-wall interaction and possibly affect the plasma edge stability. The TCV tokamak was the first to report the creation and control of a snowflake configuration, and the candidate was the principal investigator of this work. These results are accordingly discussed in this thesis. Details are provided in particular on the strategy used to establish the configuration. An edge-localized mode (ELM) H-mode regime, supported by electron cyclotron heating, has been successfully established in a snowflake. This regime exhibits 2 to 3 times lower ELM frequency but only a 20%-30% increase in normalized ELM energy (ΔWELM/WP ) compared to an identically-shaped, conventional, single-null, diverted H-mode. Enhanced stability of mid- to high-toroidal-mode-number ideal modes is consistent with the different snowflake ELM phenomenology. Finally, the capability of the snowflake to redistribute the edge power on the additional strike points has been confirmed experimentally and is also reported in this thesis.

Model-based optimization of magnetic control in the TCV tokamak: design and experiments

Thermonuclear controlled fusion is a promising answer to the current energy and climate issues, providing a safe carbon-free source of energy which is virtually inexhaustible. In magnetic confinement thermonuclear fusion based on tokamak reactors, hydrogen fuel in the state of plasma is confined using a system of external and self-generated magnetic fields. This thesis contributes to the development of magnetic confinement fusion research by applying techniques derived from control engineering to designing magnetic controllers for tokamak plasmas. Specifically, a new design for feedback control of plasma shape and position in the TCV tokamak is provided, and its efficacy is studied in dedicated simulations and experiments.Elongated plasmas lead to improved plasma performance in tokamaks, which is key to sustaining fusion conditions in reactors. The required magnetic field for shaping the plasma column however results in an unstable equilibrium that makes feedback control of the vertical plasma position mandatory. Active stabilization of the axisymmetric plasma vertical instability is a standard feature of elongated tokamaks and will be a fundamental feature in the ITER magnetic control system, since a loss of vertical control and the subsequent plasma disruption can lead to unacceptable heat loads on the plasma facing components.The TCV tokamak is the ideal benchmark for investigating the effect of plasma shaping on tokamak physics and performance, with its system of 16 independently powered poloidal field coils and a vessel with an elongated cross section. Shape and position control are coupled problems in TCV as they share the same poloidal field coils as actuators, requiring a multivariable approach to designing magnetic controllers.In this thesis, controller design for TCV is based on a model for the coupled plasma-vessel-coils electromagnetic dynamics: the RZIp model. In this axisymmetric model, the plasma current distribution is fixed but is free to move radially and vertically in the poloidal plane of a toroidal reference frame. An extension to this model is suggested, relaxing the assumption of rigid displacement in the radial direction to include plasma shape deformation and leading to a semi-rigid RZIp model which better fits numerical equilibria.An improvement to the existing algorithm for shape and position control in TCV is then proposed. In this new approach, tuning of the plasma position controller, in charge of vertical stabilization, can be performed independently of the shape controller, which itself acts on a stable system. Static decoupling is achieved and the shape controller is designed on the basis of an improved model for the plasma deformation, which includes the plasma contribution to the static magnetic flux perturbation. Simulations in closed loop with the RZIp model are provided to evaluate several optimized schemes.Finally, the vertical controller is optimized including the plasma dynamics as part of the controller design. Structured H-infinity, extending classical H-infinity to fixed-structure control systems, is applied to obtain a controller using all available coils for position control, and in particular a coil combination optimized for vertical stabilization. Closed-loop performance improvement is demonstrated in dedicated TCV experiments, confirming the simulation results and paving the way for the routine integration of the optimized position and shape controller in TCV discharges.
