Thermo-mechanical response of UHPFRC at early age — Experimental study and numerical simulation

The thermal effects on the Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) behavior are still not completely known. Under high temperatures, the processes that interact at early age are thermo-activated. All the experimental results obtained within this research confirmed it. Besides, certain authors observed a non-monotonous effect of temperature on the autogenous shrinkage and the creep of normal and high performance concretes. To clarify the thermal effect on the early age UHPFRC behavior an extensive experimental study was carried out. Tests results showed a non-monotonous effect of temperature on the autogenous shrinkage. In addition, finite element numerical simulations were performed to predict the experimental results and to validate existing models for different curing conditions. These models are necessary to predict accurately the deformations, the stresses and the damage (cracking) in the case of structural elements subjected to in-situ temperature variations.

Material and structural performance of fiber-reinforced polymer composites at elevated and high temperatures

As the range of applications for fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials in civil engineering constantly increases, there is more and more concern with regard to their performance in critical environments. The fire behavior of composite materials is especially important since complex physical and chemical processes such as the glass transition and decomposition occur when these materials are subjected to elevated and high temperatures, possibly leading to considerable loss of stiffness and strength. This stiffness and strength degradation in composite materials under elevated and high temperatures is the result of changes in polymer molecular structures. When polyester thermosets are subjected to elevated and high temperatures, they undergo three transitions (glass transition, leathery-to-rubbery transition, and rubbery-to-decomposed transition), corresponding to four different states (glassy, leathery, rubbery and decomposed). At a certain temperature, a composite material can therefore be considered as a mixture of materials that are in different states. As the content of each state varies with temperature, the composite material exhibits temperature-dependent properties. Since these changes in state can be described using kinetic theory, the quantity of material in each state can be estimated and the thermophysical and thermomechanical properties of the mixture can thus be determined. These concepts formed a basis for the development of thermophysical and thermomechanical property sub-models for composites at elevated and high temperatures and even for the description of post-fire status. Incorporating these thermophysical property sub-models into a heat transfer governing equation, thermal responses were calculated using a finite difference method. Integrating the thermomechanical property sub-models within structural theory, the mechanical responses were described using a finite element method and the time-to-failure was also predicted by defining a failure criterion. The modeling results for temperature responses, mechanical responses and post-fire behavior were compared with those obtained from structural endurance experiments on full-scale cellular GFRP (glass fiber-reinforced polymer, in this case polyester resin) panels subjected to a four-point bending configuration and fire from one side. The modeling results for time-to-failure were compared with those from the experiments carried out on GFRP tubes under combined compressive and thermal loadings. In each experimental setup, two different thermal boundary conditions were investigated – with and without water cooling through specimen cells – and good agreement was found. The understanding gained and modeling of the behavior of GFRP composites under elevated and high temperatures carried out in this thesis could be applicable for different composite materials, and also benefit investigations regarding both active and passive fire protection techniques in order to improve the fire resistance of structures made of such materials.

Submonolayer growth of cobalt on metallic and insulating surfaces studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and kinetic Monte-Carlo simulations

Submonolayer epitaxial growth is obtained by the deposition of less than a complete layer of atoms on a single crystal surface. It is of fundamental interest for industrial applications (e.g. in the semiconductor industry) as well as from the point of view of basic research. For example, it is known that nanometer-sized atomic structures (nanostructures) exhibit remarkable physical and chemical properties which can differ greatly from those of bulk matter. In order to investigate these properties, it is often necessary to create large quantities of well defined and possibly spatially ordered nanostructures. One way to achieve this result is self-organized growth where one deposits atoms on a clean crystalline surface and lets the growth process evolve freely. Here, nanostructures result from the atomic diffusion and aggregation processes taking place at the surface. Understanding the exact nature of these processes is of ongoing interest in the field of nanostructure growth. In this thesis we report about submonolayer growth experiments of the ferromagnetic transition metal cobalt. Cobalt was chosen because it exhibits remarkable magnetic properties. These experiments were performed in an ultra-high vacuum chamber and molecular beam epitaxy was used to grow the nanostructures. Observations of the surface were made using a variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM). In order to get a better understanding of the atomic processes happening at the surface, we developed two adapted computational simulation methods. Kinetic Monte-Carlo (KMC) simulations were used to get an atomistic picture of the surface while mean field rate equations were integrated numerically to yield cluster densities. We study the growth of cobalt on three different surfaces. By depositing Co on a clean Pt(111) crystal surface, we observe that the platinum surface reconstructs by forming star-shaped partial dislocations for sample temperatures above 180 K (-93°C). We also observe that island densities deviate from predictions of all known models towards higher values for these same temperatures. By simulation we are able to show that insertion of Co into the topmost platinum layer creates a repulsive network of dislocations. We show that these dislocations act as diffusion inhibiting barriers and thus influence the island density by constraining the free movement of atoms at the surface. We also show that the Co dimer and trimer diffuse on Pt(111) before dissociating and are able to extract corresponding activation barriers. We also study the deposition of Co on a Ru(0001) surface which shows a more conventional temperature dependence. By comparing simulation and experiment we extract all relevant diffusion activation barriers and show that at high temperatures the Co dimer and trimer dissociate. Finally, we investigate the growth of Co on the hexagonal boron nitride superlattice which forms on a Rh(111) surface. On this surface Co clusters form three-dimensional hemispherical dots. We show how the substrate corrugation influences diffusion of Co atoms and that clusters up to the size of the pentamer can diffuse. By simulation, we also extract the relevant migrations and desorption barriers.

First observation of spalling in tantalum at high temperatures induced by high energy proton beam impacts

Spalling in tantalum has been observed in an experiment aiming at testing an antiproton production target prototype at CERN’s HiRadMat Facility. The experiment consisted in impacting 47 intense and high-energy proton beams onto a target equipped with ten cylindrical cores made of tantalum of Ø8 mm by 16 mm. Each of these proton beam impacts induced a sudden rise of temperature in the bulk of the Ta cores around 1800 ◦C in 0.9 μs leading to the excitation of a vibration mode which exposed their material to compressive-to-tensile pressures ranging from 2 GPa to 9 GPa, with pressure rates up to 20 GPa/μs. Post-irradiation analyses such as neutron tomography and metallographic examination of the cores, revealed the creation of voids in the bulk of the tantalum cores ranging from to 2 μm to 1 mm in diameter. These voids present a non-uniform size and density distribution within the cores, with limited growth and coalescence in areas subjected to higher temperatures and tensile pressures. Grain-growth due to a fast, thermally-induced, recrystallization has been also observed in some zones. In this work, we present a detailed characterization of the unique thermal and mechanical load that has induced this spall process by means of Finite Element and hydrocode simulations, together with post-experiment microscope and EBSD observations of the Ta rods. This analysis suggests that spall-induced void growth and coalescence is enhanced in the temperature and pressure window of 1300-1800 ◦C and 3-6.5 GPa, whereas is restrained at temperatures and tensile pressures above 2000 ◦C and 6.5 GPa. In addition, the analysis suggests that full thermal-recrystallization in tantalum can take place when exposed to temperatures above 2000 ◦C for less than 2 s. Four different hypotheses to explain the observed void size distribution trends are presented.
