Résumé

The problem of transport of suspended sediment after the break of a dam on an inclined bed is considered. To that end we use the shallow-water approximation for arbitrary, constant slopes of the bottom, taking into consideration the effect of friction. The numerical technique and the frictional model are validated by comparison with available experimental data and asymptotic analytical solutions, with special attention to the numerical solution near the wetting front. The transport of suspended sediment down the inclined bed is obtained and discussed as a function of the slope of the bed for different values of the parameters characterizing the sediment and its transport properties. For sufficiently large times we always find the formation of roll waves near the water front, which affects the transport of sediments significantly. These strong oscillations are accurately computed with the numerical method used. The relative importance of the bed load (to the suspended load) sediment transport is also discussed as a function of the size of the sediment particles and the slope of the bed for different models on the initiation of sediment suspension from bed load. We also check the dilute sediment approach and characterize the conditions for its failure. Finally, the results of the present simplified model are intended to be used as tests of more complex numerical models.

Study and Numerical Simulation of Sediment Transport in Free-Surface Flow

The flow after the rupture of a dam on an inclined plane of arbitrary slope, and the induced transport of non-cohesive sediment, is analysed using the shallow-water approximation. An asymptotic (analytical) solution is presented for the flow hydrodynamics, and compared with the numerical simulation of the dam-break flood. Differences arise due to the appearance of hydrodynamic instabilities (hereafter called roll-waves) in the numerical solution. These roll-waves point out the unstable behaviour of the dam-break wave. It is found that roll-waves enhance the transport of suspended sediment. The limitations of this simple model to predict the transport of sediment in dam-break floods on steep inclines are discussed. Then, a numerical experiment is designed to analyse the unstable character of the dam-break wave, that constitutes a non-parallel and unsteady base flow. By analysing the linear and non-linear numerical evolution of small perturbations, it is possible to reveal how the nature of the ensuing flow depends not only on the Froude number (as it happens in the classical problem of roll-waves over a uniform and steady flow) but also on the non-parallel and time-varying characteristics of the background flow. Consequently, it is also shown that these effects stabilise turbulent roll-waves and raise the critical Froude number required to achieve an unstable flow. This stability result differs with that obtained with a non-parallel spatial stability analysis, pointing out the strong influence of the base-flow time-dependence in the stability criteria. A novel Continuum Mechanics model is presented to study the transport of sediment in a laminar/turbulent free-surface flow. The mixture equations for non-cohesive sediment transport in turbulent free-surface flow are derived from the ensemble averaged Navier-Stokes equations of the three-phases (water, sediment and air). This model avoids the limitations of traditional shallow-water models, and is suitable to study, for instance, the transport of sediment in non-hydrostatic shallow-water flows over bed of arbitrary bottom slopes. The model developed in this work reveals a mathematical equivalence between the propagation of the volumetric concentration of the sediment and the phase function used to capture the free surface. We take advantage of this fact to formulate an explicit Finite Volume Method (FVM) with the exact conservation property, that is implemented in the open source software OpenFOAM. Finally, this model is applied to solve the problem of local scour around a pipeline and the transport of sediment after the rupture of a horizontal dam. It is demonstrated that one-dimensional models based on depth-averaged variables (e.g. generalisations of the one-dimensional Saint-Venant equations to predict mor- phological changes) are superseded by more sophisticated and accurate procedures valid for hyperconcentrated shallow-water flows over bed of arbitrary bottom slopes (e.g. the model described herein).

Gravity currents are density-driven flows that are able to transport high amounts of sediment and are responsible of great geomorphic changes. Moreover they can have severe repercussions on the environment since they are conveyors of substances, e.g. pollutants, for long distances depending on their flow dynamics. The latter are determined by the release conditions and by the exchange at the upper and lower boundaries. The aim of this research study is to characterize the turbulent structure of gravity currents, as a consequence of the initial release conditions, to relate with their transport capacity. For this purpose, saline gravity currents are experimentally created in a laboratory channel through the lock-exchange technique. Different initial conditions, representing different configurations that can be found in reality, are considered during the experiments. The tested parameters are: initial buoyancy of the current in the lock, initial volume of release (i.e. lock-length), lock slope and grain sizes of the sediment that form an erodible bed over which the current flows. High-resolution velocity measurements, performed with an Acoustic Doppler Velocity Profiler (ADVP), allowed to describe both horizontal and vertical structures of the gravity currents. A universal criterion is established to isolate head and body of the current which are characterized by different dynamics and their extensions vary in relation with the conditions of release. A new parametrization, based on the computed temporal evolution of shear stress, allows to quantify water entrainment from the upper interface and sediment erosion capacity at the bottom. The effect of the increment of gravitational forces on its erosion capacity is tested by introducing a slope in the lock reach. The range of considered slopes goes from horizontal to S=8%. This latter is identified as a transient case in which two mechanisms compete i.e. on one side, the current entrains more water from the upper interface due to the increment of friction, the current expands, dilutes and therefore slows down; on the other side, the head is fed by the faster rear steady current thus inducing an acceleration. At the bottom, high shear stress associated with intense ejection and burst events influence erosion and bed load transport. The coupling of hydrodynamic mechanisms and processes of erosion, transport and deposition of sediment are investigated. It is shown that the upward motion, caused by mean and turbulent velocity components, promote vertical mixing of sediment fromthe channel bed. The feedback between the hydrodynamics of a gravity current and the geomorphic changes of a mobile bed are analysed. The shape of the front changes due to sediment entrainment and the deposition of sediment downstream creates characteristic patterns whose geometry reflect the coherent turbulent structure of the current. The scientific contributions elaborated in this research project allow to ameliorate the modelling of these flows, describing their inherent complex mechanisms under various initiation conditions and the interaction with suspended material. This helps to formulate adapted mitigation measures for the retention of these phenomena which frequently have a negative effect and e.g. induce reservoir sedimentation, subaqueous structure damages and scour processes in the vicinity of submerged pipelines or exacerbate pollutants dispersion.

Experimental Study on Bedload Transport and Bedforms: Behaviour and Interplay in Steep Turbulent Streams

In mountain regions, steep streams play an important role in water and sediment connectivity. In these highly dynamic systems, water flow features, sediment fluxes and stream morphologies are tightly interlinked over a broad range of temporal and spatial scales. Understanding their interactions is key to forecast, prevent and mitigate the impacts of stream-related hazards on human population and facilities as well as to manage the resources connected to the rivers. Sediment clasts at rest on the bed surface may be eroded, transported and deposited by the water flow. Grains that move in rolling and saltation regimes close to the bed compose the 'bedload', which is considered the main mode of sediment transport when studying morphodynamics of mountain rivers. The fate of these particles is of primary interest for river scientists and engineers as bedload predominantly drives the river morphology evolution and responds to it in a complex manner. Therefore, measuring and predicting bedload transport rates are fundamental concerns for many works of research and applications. Bedload transport rates may exhibit large non-Gaussian fluctuations, even under steady-state conditions, especially when bedload transport intensity is weak. These fluctuations may originate from different phenomena and affect the accuracy of bedload transport rate estimates. Particles transported by the water flow can destabilise other particles at rest on the bed surface. Under weak bedload transport conditions, this positive feedback can lead to large bedload pulses. When grains settle, they often organise in small clusters or larger bedforms. Bedform migration has been identified as one of the potential causes of bedload transport fluctuations. Trains of upstream-migrating antidunes may develop in steep coarse-bedded streams when the water discharge is sufficiently high to ensure fully supercritical flow conditions. In this dissertation, I present an experimental investigation on the behaviour of bedload transport fluctuations and antidunes in steep supercritical flows. The experiments were conducted in narrow flumes under well-controlled conditions with high-resolution image-based bedload transport and bed topography monitoring. The dependence of mean bedload transport rate uncertainty on the averaging time interval was analysed. Furthermore, I performed experimental runs with increasing transport intensity and a nearly constant mean bed slope angle to study how antidune sequences composed by bedforms of variable shape typically responded to the mean bedload flux imposed under steady-state conditions. Spectral analysis of the bed elevation perturbation in time and space allowed us to quantify the variability ranges of antidune shape and celerity. Scaling the spectra with opportune reference scales made it possible to identify a consistent dimensionless relationship between antidune geometry and migration celerity, which includes the dependencies on flow and sediment supply forcings. I studied how the bedload transport rate fluctuates in presence of migrating bedforms. The effects on the bedload transport rate periodicity due to non-uniformities in the antidune migration period and to deviations from the steady-state transport conditions were also investigated. This work is a further step on the way towards a complete understanding of the interplay between bedload transport fluctuations and bedforms in mountain streams.
