Short range attractive colloids: Dynamics and energy landscape properties

We discuss the static and dynamical properties of a model of short range attractive colloidal systems. Our model is a binary mixture of particles interacting with a modified Lennard-Jones potential that we simulated by molecular dynamics. As previously found, we confirm the existence of a maximum in diffusivity on varying the temperature at constant high density. The possibility to characterize such a maximum by studying the properties of the potential energy landscape (PEL) is also discussed. This has been achieved by calculating the configurational entropy following two independent methods. It is shown that this quantity presents a maximum in correspondence with that of diffusivity. © IOP Publishing Ltd.

Out-of-equilibrium dynamical equations of infinite-dimensional particle systems I. The isotropic case

We consider the Langevin dynamics of a many-body system of interacting particles in d dimensions, in a very general setting suitable to model several out-of-equilibrium situations, such as liquid and glass rheology, active self-propelled particles, and glassy aging dynamics. The pair interaction potential is generic, and can be chosen to model colloids, atomic liquids, and granular materials. In the limit d -> infinity, we show that the dynamics can be exactly reduced to a single one-dimensional effective stochastic equation, with an effective thermal bath described by kernels that have to be determined self-consistently. We present two complementary derivations, via a dynamical cavity method and via a path-integral approach. From the effective stochastic equation, one can compute dynamical observables such as pressure, shear stress, particle mean-square displacement, and the associated response function. As an application of our results, we derive dynamically the 'state-following' equations that describe the response of a glass to quasistatic perturbations, thus bypassing the use of replicas. The article is written in a modular way, that allows the reader to skip the details of the derivations and focus on the physical setting and the main results.

Activated Bond-Breaking Processes Preempt the Observation of a Sharp Glass-Glass Transition in Dense Short-Ranged Attractive Colloids

We study—using molecular dynamics simulations—the temperature dependence of the dynamics in a dense short-ranged attractive colloidal glass to find evidence of the kinetic glass-glass transition predicted by the ideal mode coupling theory. According to the theory, the two distinct glasses are stabilized, one by excluded volume and the other by short-ranged attractive interactions. By studying the density autocorrelation functions, we discover that the short-ranged attractive glass is unstable. Indeed, activated bond-breaking processes slowly convert the attractive glass into the hard-sphere one, preempting the observation of a sharp glass-glass transition.

Probing Protein Dynamics Using Multifield Variable Temperature NMR Relaxation and Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Understanding the interplay between protein function and dynamics is currently one of the fundamental challenges of physical biology. Recently, a method using variable temperature solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation measurements has been proposed for the simultaneous measurement of 12 different activation energies reporting on distinct dynamic modes in the protein GB1. Here, we extend this approach to measure relaxation at multiple magnetic field strengths, allowing us to better constrain the motional models and to simultaneously evaluate the robustness and physical basis of the method. The data reveal backbone and side-chain motions, exhibiting low- and high-energy modes with temperature coefficients around 5 and 25 kJ.mol(-1). The results are compared to variable temperature molecular dynamics simulation of the crystal lattice, providing further support for the interpretation of the experimental data in terms of molecular motion.
