Medium resolution X-Ray Computed Tomography of hollow cylindrical samples of Boom Clay

Laboratory experiments carried out at the LMR-EPFL on thick-walled hollow cylindrical samples aim at modelling at small-scale conditions similar to those that will be experienced by host rocks around disposal galleries for heat emitting radioactive waste. The paper presents results on a Boom Clay sample cored parallel to the bedding planes and subjected to a decrease of the confining pressure in the central hole of the hollow cylinder. It focuses on medium resolution X-Ray Computed Tomography (XRCT) scans of the sample inside the testing cell that were carried out with a medical scanner. By comparing the scans before and after the mechanical unloading (tracking of the movement of pyrite inclusions), quantitative analyses of the displacements undergone by the clay can be performed. The observations point out a significant mechanical anisotropy of Boom Clay related to its bedding planes.

Tomodensitométrie

La tomodensitométrie (TDM), dite aussi scanographie, tomographie axiale calculée par ordinateur (TACO), CT-scan (CT : computed tomography), CAT-scan (CAT : computer-assisted tomography), ou simplement scanner ou scanneur pour l'appareil, est une technique d' qui consiste à mesurer l'absorption des rayons X par les tissus puis, par traitement informatique, à numériser et enfin reconstruire des images 2D ou 3D des structures anatomiques.

Radiographie

vignette|droite|redresse=1.2|Radiographie pulmonaire numérisée. La radiographie est une technique d', par rayons X dans le cadre de la radiographie X, ou par rayons gamma en gammagraphie. Les rayons X sont des ondes électromagnétiques de hautes fréquences de l'ordre de 1016 Hz à 1020 Hz et qui pénètrent la matière condensée (solides et liquides). Elle permet d'obtenir un cliché dont le contraste dépend à la fois de l'épaisseur et du coefficient d'atténuation des structures traversées.
